32. Cowboys: Malik McDowell DT Michigan State

The Cowboys needs on defense are apparent. While they have performed at a much higher level than expected, I do not know if they would be able to hang with a high flying offense like Atlanta or Raiders, or Patriots if their offense can’t move the ball. The past 3 weeks the Cowboys have relied on their defense to win games for them being 2-1 in those matchups. While they have gotten to the QB as of late I think it’s an anomoly because of the pourous O lines they have faced. David Irving had an amazing game against the Bucs, but he only did that one other time this year against the Packers.

The Cowboys need more pass rush. McDowell like Irving is massive for a DE at 6’6″ 282 lbs. according to most sites. Irving is 6’7″ 270. If Irving can continue to improve over his career as it’s only his second season it could offer valuable size to an undersized DT group. McDowell is listed as a DT, but actually seems better suited for 4-3 or 3-4 DE. McDowell plays with violent heavy hands that throw blockers off balance.

While he isn’t super quick off the ball it is quicker than most DT. He can play any position on the line and seems to have unlimited potential. But there are draw backs he has perhaps the highest ceiling among all the players in this class, but he also has a lot of bust potential. He doesn’t give the same effort on all plays, and he gets stood up a lot, I believe this is due to him playing out of position. But it is enexcusable when he can get low on key downs, but then doesn’t when it’s 1st or 2nd down. While he plays with good power and quickness, he doesn’t seem to hold up well against double teams at times giving up on plays. He needs to add lower body strength to better combat this weakness. I do not suggest playing him at NT.

If Dallas can expand on his strengths and minimize his weaknesses he can be a force for Dallas and help correct their lack of elite play from their D line.
