The Ringer CEO and die hard Patriots fan Bill Simmons is back at it again for his 2021 NFL Draft coverage. Simmons was joined by Danny Kelly who broke down the four quarterbacks scheduled to go in the first round.

As we know now, the four quarterbacks are Trey Lance, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and either Justin Fields or Mac Jones. Simmons says that there is movement within the Patriots organization to trade up in the first round for Justin Fields.

According to Simmons, the Patriots would trade with Detroit at #7 to get in front of Denver and the Panthers pick that is also “for sale” but still not high enough to beat out Denver who could grab whoever of the QBs are left.

Do I think the Lions will hand over the #7 pick to New England and help them draft Justin Fields? Crazier things have happened but the asking price this year is scheduled to be even higher than the Jimmy Johnson draft chart.

Will Bill Belichick shell out the picks to get Justin Fields? Will Cam Newton become a Pro Bowl QB again? Will Tom Brady play until he’s 65? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z.

It looks like the color rushes are the new primary uniforms and there is a new away white top. These look pretty good, not perfect but good enough. Maybe a solid blue stripe on the shoulder would have been more pleasing than the red, but still these aren’t terrible.

Sports media (Colin Cowherd) is going crazy today on a theory that the Patriots may be moving up for Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 NFL Draft. That’s a nice theory and all, considering that multiple sources are leaking reports that the Patriots are interested in getting a premium pick but there is a problem: they only have one. And it’s too low to get Tua.

I simply don’t see a scenario where Tua lasts to 23 (New England’s pick.) To trade up from 23 to 3 without a second round pick is also going to be extremely difficult. I mean, the Lions could absolutely demand Stephon Gilmore in the trade and I doubt it happens but that is probably the only way it happens. Yes I know the Lions staff has ties to New England but if they want to keep their jobs they’ll get a RGIII haul if they trade out of the spot.

Here is Cowherd’s theory on Tagovailoa to New England:

A lot of controversy is swirling about the draft community regarding the New England Patriots and their interest in Johnny Manziel. For the record, the Patriots have conducted an interview with UCF’s Blake Bortles as well, and have one scheduled with Teddy Bridgewater.

While this seems like a bit overkill it makes incredible sense for this franchise. For one, at pick 29 overall drafting a quarterback isn’t going to cost the team much in terms of opportunity cost or literal money. 29 is the same range teams have taken chances on Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn, and Brandon Weeden in the past.

Also looking forward this team has already tried to bring in the fore-mentioned Tebow with no success. As of today the only quarterbacks on the roster are the Legendary (aka OLD) Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett who is an unrestricted free agent in the spring of 2015.

This team needs to sign a quarterback for no other reason than to have someone with experience on the roster just in case Mallett leaves. There is always a scenario that could play out such as reacquiring a guy who’s been in the system like Matt Cassell or Brian Hoyer, but it’s just smarter to have a guy already there. Especially when most of your needs have been filled in free agency.

“Magic” and all that aside Johnny Manziel is a solid pro prospect. I fully expect him to be a career starter in the league. At the worst he’s a Jeff Garcia type. A guy with a diminutive stature but the talent and tough attitude to win games make a Pro Bowl here and there. Don’t be surprised if New England pulls the trigger if Johnny Football drops to 29.

As you may know by now, the New England Patriots have decided to sign former Broncos QB and Jets Punt Protector Tim Tebow. The deal is non-guaranteed and lasts two seasons. For a team that is so calculated at making personnel decisions you have to wonder why would they do this? Well there are a few reasons.

1. Josh McDaniels Still Has Plans

As you may remember, McDaniels was the coach in Denver who decided to draft Tim Tebow. The pick came after McDaniels and Tebow had a lengthy conversation during the predraft process about how Tebow would be used. The problem? McDaniels decided to start Kyle Orton and was fired before Tebow ever started a game. Interim coach Eric Studesville was actually the man who decided to start Tebow, and with nothing to lose, Tebow actually came in and played decently. That following off-season John Fox was hired and the rest is as they say history.

The thing to remember here is that, whatever Josh McDaniels and Tim Tebow talked about never materialized on the field. So maybe there is still some new, innovative quasi-wildcat that McDaniels wants to run with Tebow.

2. The Patriots Take Cheap Personnel Gambles

Remember Ochocino? (#FREECHAD by the way) Haynesworth? Donte Stallworth’s second run? Kellen Winslow? Fred Taylor?

@MockDraftHQ u think the pats were calculated from the get go? when they were shitting on tebow to lower demand?

— Tyrone Biggums (@IRepMia) June 11, 2013

There is a long list of cheap veterans that Bill Belichick has kicked the tires on during the twilight of their careers. Tebow is just another name in this list. The true backup Quarterback and successor to Tom Brady is already in place in Ryan Mallet. If Tebow proves to be serviceable then it’s just icing on the cake.

Unless…

3. Tebow Would Make Ryan Mallet Expendable

…if in some Twilight Zone Tim Tebow becomes a quality backup passer, then the Patriots would be able to cash in on their investment in Mallet.

It isn’t talked about much but Mallet is a highly coveted young Quarterback in his league. If he ever becomes available the Pats won’t have to wait long to find a trade partner.

Either way, this may be the curtain call for #TebowTime.

How do they keep executing these trades? Why does the rest of the league enjoy helping them stockpile young talent?

Oh well, either way the former Nebraska CB Alfonzo Dennard will now be defending passes in Foxboro, Ma. He dropped all the way to the 7th round after getting arrested for resisting arrest during a bar fight.

Once his legal issues are cleared up, I don’t expect to hear another peep of him off the field. Dropping from the first or second round all the way to the seventh is pretty sobering.

The Patriots can always use extra defensive backs and got great value in Dennard at this point in the draft.

Again.

Pat Chung was a great selection for them a couple of years back, but its evident that New England needs to develop a rotation of solid players. According to a report from ESPN they may use one, or both of their second round picks at the CB position:

Patriots may be looking for a safety with one of their second round picks. The Patriots have had some relative hits (Patrick Chung, James Sanders) and misses (Brandon Meriweather, Guss Scott, Dexter Reid) drafting at the position.

Then it is on to my favorite time of the year… DRAFT SEASON. But before we get to that, the big game must be played. If you actually read the title of this post you already know that I am in fact predicting that the New York Giants will win Super Bowl XLVI (this has the potential look real dumb tomorrow night).

So why am I putting my very imaginary money down on the NY Giants? There are 5 reasons. Check them out:

The universe has this way of balancing the Yin and the Yang of all things. No one person can have it all. And because of that, I am predicting that Eli Manning officially cements himself as the Lex Luthor to Tom Brady’s Superman. It will go down in the history books that no matter how great Tom Brady was, he just couldn’t beat Eli Manning in the big game. It all started with the David Tyree pass. Eli took New England’s soul like Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat.

2. Eli Manning is the Best Big Game QB in the League

I cannot believe I just typed that. Even after ALMOST declaring Eli a bust a few years ago, I too have had to eat my words. Eli Manning simply wins in the playoffs. There are some guys (Elway, Young, Roethlisberger, etc.) that turn it up another level when the stakes are the highest. Eli is in that group. As of today his playoff record is a sickening 6-4 in playoff games with 1 Super Bowl ring.

3. SALSA!

Who is going to guard Victor Cruz? Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

If you answered “Devin McCourty” congratulations you have the incorrect answer. Let’s keep it honest, the Patriots should not even be in this game. If it wasn’t for a 3rd string CB making a play on NFL vet Lee Evans the Ravens are representing the AFC.

4. NASCAR

What does NASCAR have to do with this? That is the name of the package the Giants run with 4 defensive ends on the field. Between Osi, Jason Pierre-Paul, Kiwanuka, and the rest of the Giants defensive line you know they are going to get some pressure on Tom Brady. And don’t forget that Brady was in a mini slump against Baltimore.

5. GRONK HURT

The thing that people will be keeping an eye on is the health of Rob Gronkowski’s ankle. The Patriots tight end was seen limping about media day as if to say “Im going to play!” and I would not expect anything less. The thing is… if Gronk is anything less than 100% the Patriots lose their best down field target. Welker and Branch aren’t the deep field threat on this year’s team- its Gronk. So if Gronk is hurt and his speed is effected in any way it could cause New England to see a lot more safety play in the box than they would otherwise.

All in all I think it will be a great game. A LOT of history is at stake. Coaching legacy’s, quarterbacking legacy’s, young players looking to arrive on the big stage. It is going to be a fun one but at the end of the day, I think we will all be doing the SALSA.

A lot of people think the Patriots are the best run organization in football. It is hard to argue with that opinion, especially when they complete deals like this.

Where else can you get an All-Pro for a fifth? A starting WR for a fiftth and a six?!

Bill is playing chess, not checkers right now.
