Where Will Tyrann Mathieu Go in the 2013 Draft?

If you haven’t heard the name Tyrann Mathieu, you surely will in the next weeks. LSU is #1 in the country and a large part of that has to do with their game changer, the “Honey Badger” himself, Mr. Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu is not eligible for the 2012 NFL Draft, as he won’t be enough years removed from High School but you’d have to consider him a fringe first rounder for 2012 IF he was allowed to enter. He’s already on several Heisman ballots and should be at the Downtown Athletic Club this year. Voters will probably shun him for the one game suspension he served earlier this year, so next year is the year for TM7 to get his Heisman if he is ever going to do it.

But were will he go in the 2013 draft? The thing about Mathieu is that he is a smaller, physical corner. That is very very hard to project. A similar type of player in Kyle Wilson out of Boise (5’10, 190 lbs.) went 29th overall in 2010.

The value with selecting Mathieu for a team comes clearly from his special teams play. This guy can field kicks, block kicks, and cover kicks, and put points on the board doing all three. When you have that type of ability teams tend to let go of their height/weight prerequsites.

I think we will see Tyrann Mathieu go around the 9-11 spot in the 2013 NFL Draft to a team that’s unafraid of taking the best player on the board.
