Cam Newton Working With George Whitfield

Cam Newton has a new QB coach as he prepares for the NFL Draft.  He is currently working with George Whitfield on getting comfortable under center and going through his progressions fluidly.  Whitfield was Ben Roethlisberger’s QB coach during his suspension. This is showing that Cam at least is interested in improving his skills in the pocket for the immediate future.

It is just weird that guys can go first round and be drafted to do things they never did in college.  This is the dreaded “Tebow problem” as I’ll call it now.  How do you project a running QB from a spread offense as a NFL QB?  Do the two months before the draft really mean that much?

There have been players that have made the transition from spread to traditional QB pretty nicely.  Sam Bradford comes to mind, but then again he isn’t a runner and more of a pure passer.  I’m not saying it can’t be done, and that I don’t think Cam can be the next success, but he certainly has his work cut out for him.

True about doing something in the NFl that he didnt do in college, BUT many coaches can be happy with the tebow problem if that means he’s a great leader. Tebow and cam are the same as in scrambling tough QBs who played in a spread, and again, but newton has an NFL favored throwing motion.

I agree that leadership does factor in heavily. As well does Tebows work ethic which earned him McDaniels first round pick. I think Newton has to show that type of willingness to learn to be a long term success.
