West Virginia QB Will Grier headlines CowboysFan’s latest 2019 draft picks. Grier stands tall amongst the 2019 draft class after posting an impressive 2017 season which compiled 34 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a 64% completion percentage.

This is a very early projection but and things could change but it looks good for Grier in this projection. Mocks are made to change so take it easy as you read the analysis below.

On to the picks.

1. Dolphins: Will Grier QB West Virginia

Biggest Needs: WR, CB, and QB. Ryan Tannehill has not improved as a QB, and the Dolphins have made quite a few changes to help him, but nothing has worked. It’s time to look for a new signal caller. Grier isn’t the most mobile QB, but his size and armstrength are impressive. He throws well and accurate. Some may have concerns about the college level offense he plays, but I think with his skillset he could surpass every QB in this draft.

2. Bills: Ed Oliver DT Houston

Biggest Needs: WR and DT. The Bills traded away Darius and they need a replacement. Oliver is a special player who is capable of playing any spot on the defensive line and even LB if need be. At 290 he moves very quickly and showed up against the best competition as well. He is an elite pass rusher who should have no issue stopping the run. I think there could be a little concern that he was hurt a bit this year that caused him to miss games.

3. Jets: Nick Bosa DE Ohio State

Biggest Needs: Playmakers and Outside Pass Rush They could go with AJ Brown, but you don’t pass up on a top tier pass rusher when you have the chance. Nick is a bit more twitchy than Joey Bosa, but his talent level is of the same calaber. He may not be a Von Miller off the edge, but his ability to get off the line and play with positioning and technicial finesse will serve him well in the NFL and will pair well with the young stud Leonard Williams.

4. Colts: Dexter Lawrence DT Clemson

I think the Colts could go any number of ways here, but if they are serious about soldifying their defense then Lawrence is the best possible pick. He’s a mountain who stuffs the run with some, but not elite pass rush ability. He will help anybody in the defense as he demands all the attention due to his size and strength.

5. Buccaneers: Greg Little OT Ole Miss

Biggest Needs: O line, secondary help, running back The Bucs have some needs, but nothing that compares to their O line. The Bucs have tried to repair their lackluster line, but to no avail. Keeping Winston up right and opening holes in the run game is what they should be aiming for. They do so by getting the best O linemen by far. Despite his massive size he moves well in the run game able to get to the second level. He also anchors well in the passing game. If there is a weakness there are times where he gets heavy footed which will hurt him against experienced edge rushers.

According to sources, former West Virginia Quarterback Geno Smith has accepted his invitation to attend the 2013 NFL Draft. Pro Football Talk reports that Geno will indeed be in the green room waiting to hear his name called.

If Geno isn’t called in the first 10 picks as projected, it won’t be nearly as awkward as when Brady Quinn was left all alone. The NFL now invites a ton of players to New York so there will be some guys in the back to keep him company.

Where do you think Geno Smith will get drafted?

Vince Young isn’t the only former NFL quarterback working out at college pro days this Spring. Former West Virginia Mountaineer Pat White also set his skills on display to impress NFL teams.

For those that remember, Pat was one of the most productive college quarterbacks during his time in school. His running ability was displayed in the spread option attack which is now dominating the NFL. Could he be a backup option for Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers?

According to CSNBayArea.com, White is awaiting a call from the 49ers after his workout.

It’s not likely he will see significant playing time even if signed because he wasn’t able to take the NFL pounding during his very short stay in Miami. But we’ll see what develops. Either way the Niners could use a replacement for Alex Smith in the event Kaep himself gets hurt.

The NYDaily news is also reporting that White will workout for the Giants.

2013 NFL Draft: Tavon Austin in the Top 10?

As we get closer and closer to the 2013 NFL Draft, more and more stories seem to come out of the woodwork. Will team A do this? Will team B do that? Most of it is 99% hearsay but as with any rumor there is a hint of truth in it.

So when I heard talks of Tavon Austin being looked at by a top 10 team I hesitated to immediately dismiss it. Scouts such as Todd McShay have already said publicly that Austin is the quickest athlete they’ve ever seen on film. Tavon did blow up the combine. He was virtually unstoppable at West Virginia. There has to be a little something to this… right?

Let’s look at the top 10. Which one of these teams would take a gamble that big on a little guy?

1. Chiefs- no, just no.
2. Jaguars- nah.
3. Raiders- too many of the same type of receiver already.
4. Eagles- they have the “slower” version already in DeSean Jackson.
5. Lions- doubt it.
6. Browns- bigger needs elsewhere. Even QB makes more sense.
7. Cardinals- see: Browns.
8. Bills- gettin’ warm…. I could see it happening here.
9. Jets- ding, ding, ding! If there is a team that’s bold enough to draft Tavon Austin top 10 it’s the Bills or the J-E-T-S. Both teams need a game changer at WR and are no strangers to BOLD moves.

All in all I don’t see it happening, these type of receivers go in the 25-50 range. I don’t think a team can afford to blow a premium pick here. One of my favorite players of all time was Peter Warrick and he went 4th overall…. that didn’t work out too well.

Most read something like this:

“your boy Geno is done”

“Geno got exposed”

“Geno still top 5 NFL Draft?!”

..all because he failed to lead a West Virginia team that cannot stop anyone on defense to another high-scoring win. The thing is when you play the air raid style of ball you are most likely to lose to another air raid team. How ironic right?

When your drives last less than three real time minutes and your defense isn’t getting any stops you are going to eventually get outgunned. It is just a fact of playing that style of ball.

Now, Geno did struggle but it is one game people. One game! He still put together a decent stat line of 275 yards and no interceptions. Texas Tech put up 49 points on a leaky WVU defense and made it look easy. Geno and crew basically had this whooping coming down the pipe eventually due to running the air raid with such a leaky defense and it just happened to happen on Saturday. No reason to panic about Geno’s NFL Draft stock.

Taking nothing away from Klein, because he is doing well, but how can you totally ignore what Smith is doing right now? At the beginning of the season Smith was looked at as another gimmick coming out of the air raid offense and was not considered a top 2013 NFL Draft pick.

Well, every week goes by and all Smith does is complete passes at an extremely high rate, and doesn’t throw interceptions.

Smith wasn’t even the star. He didn’t do much to hurt his Heisman stock, going 25-of-35 for 268 yards, four touchdowns, and again, no interceptions

Smith is on Matt Barkley’s heels right now. I don’t care what anyone says.
