It is a little known fact that when you hear these claims of “xyz college player bought $1 million insurance plan against injury” that the player almost never collects. That’s right. It’s not even almost never, its actually NEVER. There has never, ever, ever been a player to actually cash in his insurance policy.

This is until now.

Oregon’s Ifo Ekpre Olomu has begun the collection process of the policy he bought during his final collegiate season in which he blew his ACL during a practice. Ifo fell from a possible first round pick all the way to the seventh round.

According to RealGM he will at least have some of the rookie salary he lost out on recouped by the insurance policy:

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is expected to be the first player to collect on a loss of draft value insurance, according to the man who underwrote the policy.

Keith Lerner told CBS Sports Thursday night that Ekpre-Olomu is in the process of collecting a $3 million claim after suffering a season-ending knee injury in December. The All-American corner, projected to be a first-round draft choice last May, slipped to the seventh round after blowing out his ACL before the College Football Playoff National Championship.

“That claim is close to getting paid,” said Lerner, the Gainesville, Florida-based head of Total Planning Sports Services.

If I am a high profile player I am calling Ifo for the name of his insurance provider ASAP.

With news of Dante Fowler’s timely ACL tear many athletes are probably taking more caution today, especially those who aren’t getting paid yet.

With news of Dante Fowler’s timely ACL tear many athletes are probably taking more caution today, especially those who aren’t getting paid yet. An injury is always terrible but on the bright side at least Fowler has millions of dollars and a world class training staff on his side.

For college athletes, not so much. That’s why collegiate athletes are now taking out insurance policies against their final years before the draft. The only problem? Insurance companies aren’t paying out.

That’s right. No college athlete has ever collected on an insurance policy against injury:

As those who have dealt with insurance companies may know, the road from calls for to pay out isn’t always a smooth one. Darren Rovell of ESPN reports that no college player who had a loss of value policy has ever collected and notes that USC Marqise Lee is trying to collect on money he believes he’s owed after dropping to the 39th pick in 2014.

With the season upon us it is time to get ready for some college football. Very soon the site will be updated with new mocks, rankings, and more. But for now by popular demand, I give you the Official MDHQ Preseason National Championship Prediction.

Before you dive in it, I will tell you this. The departure of Tyrann Mathieu had no impact on what you’re about to read. LSU has an awesome defense, yes, but at the end of the day the SEC looks too congested this year for anyone to come out unscathed.

And with that said, here is the Official Prediction:

#1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. #2 USC Trojans

Why Oklahoma?

Two words: Landry Jones. Not to mention Blake Bell as the goal line “wildcat QB” and a host of talented receivers. This offense is just going to be too efficient at scoring points this season. There are only two games that are going to be tough for them. 11/17 at West Virginia and two weeks later at TCU to close the season.

If Oklahoma runs the table, then without a doubt they go into the National Championship game. Even if they loose in Morgantown or Fort Worth, they would still be the odds on favorite to be the #2 team in the Nation depending on what happens in the SEC and ACC.

Why USC?

Too much experience. Something to play for.

And that pretty much sums it up. The Trojans are coming off suspension, have retained superstar QB Matt Barkley and acquired Silas Redd from Penn State. Did I mention they still have Robert Woods and a pretty tough defense as well?

Everything is set up for the Trojans to run the table. I don’t see them having to struggle in any game this season, but I’ll rank them #2 for now because in true USC fashion they will struggle with some random team on a Wednesday night they have no business having difficulties with. All in all, the Trojans should occupy one of the Title Game slots.
