That got me thinking- what does this year’s draft have in common with the one in April? I found a couple similarities:

1. The number one picks are going to VERY bad teams

Cam Newton and projected number-one pick Kyrie Irving are headed to teams whose abysmal play earned them the number one spot in each draft. Jake Delhomme couldn’t hold down a starting gig in Carolina, while the LeBron-less Cavs held onto life harder than their owner was holding onto his resentment. The Cavs and Panthers combined for a record of 21-76 (compare that to the combined 69-29 record the teams earned just the year prior). I guess this is what these drafts were made to do- get the worst teams the best youngsters, and some hope for the future. The bad news is that neither player will skyrocket their team to the top, which leads to my second point:

2. There are no superstars in either class

Some are calling it the worst draft in NBA history as far as prospects go. The NFL wasn’t far behind. There’s usually a couple guys each year who are labeled can’t-miss prospects (John Wall & Ndamukong Suh 2010, Blake Griffin & Michael Crabtree 2009). Not the case in either draft this year. Irving was injured most of the year and remained the top prospect, without much competition. Newton was taken first despite his off-the-field concerns and lack of mental capacity for the game.

Only time will tell if these drafts produce superstars or busts. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the beauty of the draft.

This Orange County Register article quoted Leiweke as saying while these teams are “in the mix… We’re not packing any moving vans right now.”

Leiweke has talked to representatives of the Vikings, Chargers, Raiders, Jaguars, and Rams about a possible change in location. The Jaguars, according to insiders and experts, are the most likely to make the move based on their lowly season ticket sales thus far and poor fan attendance overall the past couple of seasons.

AEG has already laid out a blueprint for a $1 billion, 72,000 seat stadium. AEG owner Philip Anschutz, according to Leiweke, is willing to pay whatever it takes to get an NFL team back in LA.

There is no doubt he is a great football mind who will by this time next year have a job in another big-time college city.

But what if an NFL team gives him a call? Should he take the plunge?

I’ll put it simply: Absolutely not.

He’s obviously proven he is a successful coach in the college rankings, but success at that level doesn’t guarantee a great NFL career. Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino are two obvious examples of successful college coaches who couldn’t handle the rigors of the NFL.

Tressel produced NFL-worthy talent, but if you look at the 14 First Round draft picks that he produced in his ten-year tenure, the list of names isn’t very impressive. Jets Center Nick Mangold is by far the best NFL talent Tressel coached. Saints Defensive End Will Smith is probably the second best, and Santonio Holmes rounds out the top three.

But take a look at the top ten picks Tressel produced: AJ Hawk, Donte Whitner, Ted Ginn, and Vernon Gholston. At best they are role players on their teams, and not difference makers worthy of a top-ten pick.

An NFL head coaching gig is very enticing, but if I’m Jim Tressel I take a year off, and take a look at open positions at colleges. I’m thinking he’s already got his eyes on a certain job in Athens, Georgia- if Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt doesn’t produce this year, expect the Sweater Vest return to the SEC in Bulldog Red for the fall of 2012.

This cancellation has two major effects for rookies- both on and off the field.

Usually held in the beginning of June, the Rookie Symposium is a conference where rookies learn the NFL lifestyle; they learn about managing finances, adjusting their mindset to that of an NFL player, and staying out of trouble off of the field.

Rookies with character concerns will be the ones to watch out for off of the field. Players like Ravens CB Jimmy Smith and Patriots QB Ryan Mallet are now more at risk to find themselves incarcerated. It’s a good thing both have strong locker rooms to help guide them.

Expect lesser-than-expected play on the field from rookies, especially those picked in the first round. Living in a big city and having lots of money will distract attention from work. Guys with concerns about their work ethic, like Panthers QB Cam Newton and Lions DT Nick Fairley, could be no-shows for the first part of the season.

Hopefully this is just one of few events that is forced to be cancelled because of the lockout, but it will have its effects regardless.

It was obvious during the draft that the Bengals were ready to move on from the Palmer/Johnson era. AJ Green and Andy Dalton look like they’re the future of that Offense.

But what about Palmer and Johnson? The lockout has them stuck in Cincinnati, but that’s no reason to not speculate where they could eventually end up.

Palmer

Best Fit- Washington. Palmer would love to play for a head coach who’s won a championship. John Beck cannot be a serious Quarterback candidate for the Redskins if they want to be taken seriously. Palmer has played best when he can be a game manager and rely on the Defense for wins, and the ‘Skins are building a pretty respectable defensive unit.

Where He’ll End Up- Denver. Kyle Orton will be moved, and unless Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn can prove their worth, John Fox would love to get his hands on Palmer. Palmer probably reminds Fox of Jake Delhomme, who quarterbacked the Panthers to success during Fox’s best years in Carolina.

Johnson

Best Fit- St. Louis. A year in Buffalo did T.O. a lot of good, and it would have the same effect on Johnson. Playing in a city without many distractions would allow Johnson to play his best. I’m sure Sam Bradford wouldn’t mind having a savvy, reliable veteran to throw the ball to.

Where He’ll End Up- New York Jets. Both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards are free agents. That in itself creates a big hole at the position. Rex Ryan would love another character in the locker room and at press conferences. On a serious note, going up against Revis Island everyday in practice may make Johnson strive to be the best he can.
