Dallas Cowboys 2019 NFL Mock Draft – Week 1 (They Pick a New QB, DAK GONE)

Is Dak the answer? We won’t know until after the season if Jerry Jones gives Dak a big extension but that is certainly the biggest question in Dallas right now. Beyond that, receivers couldn’t get open vs. the Panthers and the defense made Cam Newton look like it was 2016 again.

How will Dallas fix this? Let’s take a look at Cowboysfan newest 2019 mock to see how it might play out:

As of right now I have Dallas drafting between pick 12 and 15. I am not confident in our coaching staff and the issues that plagued Dak his rookie season have carried over into his third year so far. If things go south I expect a change finally. Things aren’t looking good when Jerry leaves a stadium not speaking to any members of the media. My votes for HC are Lincoln Riley from OU and if they stay in house Kris Richard.

1. Cowboys: Noah Fant TE Iowa

Round 1: Dallas trades back to obtain a 3rd and 4th round pick. The Cowboys needs weapons on offense. There really aren’t any WR I would take in the first outside of Brown, so Fant is the next best option. TEs don’t go in the first unless they are explosive and Fant is. He’s around 6’4″ 232 lbs. So he isn’t a big TE, but he is very fast for the position and is an absolute nightmare for LBs to cover. He is great at getting down the field, with solid hands, and good at finding soft spots in zone. Areas he needs to improve on is his hands, he’s dropped a few balls, that concern me, and while he knows how to block, right now I don’t think he’s big enough to pick up blitzing LBs and S coming off the edge. So he’s got to get stronger. A new coach gets a new toy to work with on offense.

2. Cowboys: Will Grier QB West Virginia

Round 1: Dallas uses the picks they got from the trade in the first round to move back into the 1st. They give up a 2nd rounder, 3rd rounder, and a 2020 5th rounder to get back into the draft. They take Grier. If the Cowboys add a new coach, there is a high probability that they will look to groom a QB of their choosing. Analysts and draft scouts don’t seem as hihg on Grier as I am. He can make all the throws, despite playing in a college offense, he can make reads on the defense. He has good mobility. The weakneses are that he still does need to improve going through progressions as they aren’t perfect, and his size. I’ve seen him listed at 6’2″ and 6’1″, so he isn’t a big guy, and it’s concerning given his frame since he’s pretty lanky. He will have to answer some questions about his PED usage before he got to West Virginia, but he is still an excellent prospect they can groom to take over.

3. Cowboys: Devin Singletary RB Florida Atlantic

Round 3: You’re thinking, Dallas has Ezekiel Elliott, why draft a RB high. While I think Elliott will be retained, you always want to look at the future as well, in case he puts himself outside of our price range. Even so, having a good backup is never a bad thing. Smith will be a FA. Singletary offers that scat back type that I would love to have if a new coach comes to Dallas. Singletary is going to have to shake off the too small label, at 5’7″ 199 lbs. But boy he sure doesn’t run like it. He’s got a very built lower base and runs a lot tougher than a guy his size suggests. He isn’t fast unfortunately, but he’s so elusive and shifty, you could swear he wears vaseline on his jersey. So many missed tackles are caused because he’s so slippery and patient in jump cuts and jukes. I didn’t really see him used as much as a receiver, so hopefully we’ll see more of that, if so he would be the perfect compliment to Zeke. If I had to compare him to anyone, Ray Rice might be fair, without the DV issues of course.

4. Cowboys: Daylon Mack DT Texas A&M

Round 4: Dallas needs DTs. Sure I am fine with the current group, but Irving is likely to be gone after this season. Collins is okay, but he will be a FA next offseason. Woods and Ross are good rotational pieces, but getting ahead of the curve is never a bad idea. Mack is a massive guy. He’s about 6’5″ 340 lbs. Now depending on which site you go to, there are some that suggests he’s slimmed down to about 315, which is still a good thing. Mack isn’t really a pass rusher, although he is a bit underrated in this area. Basically, don’t leave him one on one, otherwise he’s going to walk that OG in the pocket of the QB. More of a run stuffer right now. The concerns are if he will reach his potential, and if he can keep his weight managed. His weight has been in issue leading to poor conditioning and smaller snap counts because of it. If he can manage the weight and be more consistent he can be a good starter.

5. Cowboys: Kaleb McGary OT Washington

Round 4: I know some people will say that oh why is Dallas taking another offensive lineman. You can never have enough depth at this position, and right now Dallas lacks a true swing tackle. I have been less than impressed by Fleming. And even if McGary isn’t going to be a starter down the road, backup O linemen still have trade value in the NFL. McGary will be our swing tackle. He’s about 6’6″ 320 lbs. So he’s massive, and is excellent as a run blocker, could improve as a pass blocker, but isn’t bad in this area. I think that he is a tad slow footed, but with proper coaching he can improve.
