2017 Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft: Need Some D?

3. Cowboys: Corey Davis WR Western Michigan

The Cowboys offense has struggled without Dez Bryant. This team has shown their inability to move the ball with the other receivers since they are not able to draw coverage. Terrance Williams is a FA this year. He hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t been a great player either. He body catches too much, and doesn’t get open as consistently. This year he has also made a lot of boneheaded mistakes. This all means that the #2 WR spot is open for grabs. Corey Davis is a staggering 6’3″ 215 lbs. with speed to make defenses fear the deep ball. He is built well with a strong upper body, putting the pressure on CB to have to make a tackle. He has very good route running ability to get open. He is also efficient with stutter steps and head fakes to keep a CB guessing. He can play inside or outside. He is a reliable catcher of the football able to pluck it out of the air. He can get open in underneath routes or on deep balls. He is a big receiver but doesn’t always play that way. He sometimes tries to use his speed and quickness combined with a stutter step to get open which wastes time instead of using his hands to free himself. He also doesn’t use his 6’3″ size to win contested jump balls. One of the areas of Terrance’s game that Dallas will miss is his blocking. Terrance Williams has limits as a receiver, but is one of the best WR in the NFL when it comes to pure blocking assignments. Corey Davis is simply not consistent in this area and needs serious development. Dallas needs someone who could take over if Dez goes down, and needs to be trusted by his QB’s not to drop a football trying to body catch. Davis presents a big target with speed to help a young QB.

4. Cowboys: Jalen Reeves-Maybin OLB Tennessee

The D line may not be good, but the LB are even worse. When the DT have done their job to contain the run and eat up blocks, the LB simply haven’t been able to get off theirs and make the tackle. Rolando McClain is completely untrustworthy and will never play another down for the team, Anthony Hitchens isn’t able to get off blocks and is a liability in coverage, and Justin Durant is a solid player but isn’t physical enough to play a full 16 game season at MLB. Jaylon Smith is simply a hope for Dallas at this point. He may never play again. But I am not betting my LB group on a maybe. Maybin is the next guy Dallas drafts in round 4 at LB. Maybin is excellent at diagnosing run plays to the outside. He easily blows up screen passes having the patience not to get out of position. He is also very athletic with the speed to keep up with WR so much so sometimes he plays CB in spots. At 6’1″ 230 lbs. he isn’t exactly the biggest kid on the block. He knows how to work his way off blocks which is something our current LB fail to do. He is a capable blitzer as well being able to find the soft spot in the blocking scheme and the moves to get into the backfield. He isn’t a blow it up LB, but he is a reliable tackler in space. He goes for the legs of ball carriers too often and will overpursue run plays that leave him exposed to cut back lanes. He lacks ideal size and arm length, but thus far it has not hurt him too much. He is good in coverage, but does not get his hands on too many passes which is somewhat of a concern. He can be a bit of a wildcard though. He needs to have better composure which has labeled him a dirty player being ejected from games and having suspensions on his resume. Maybin may not be an elite LB at the next level, but he offers speed that the Cowboys do not have at the LB position. He is ideal for the OLB role but could potentially play MLB if Jaylon Smith fails to recover.
