In case you did not know, the NFL recently held a veteran’s combine which featured over 100 players doing the traditional NFL Draft combine drills in front of league scouts and general managers. The players featured veterans, most of which had been out of football for quite some time.

Brady Quinn, Tim Tebow, and Michael Sam were among the biggest names available. Also were names you may remember from the past such as Felix Jones and Michael Bush.

The Embarrassing 40 Times

Several of these players proved that they were pretty much done athletically. The average 40 time for the running backs was about a 4.8, which in perspective would be impressive for a 300 lb. offensive lineman.

No Room for VY

Legendary University of Texas quarterback Vince Young applied for the combine and actually wasn’t invited. I hate to say it but it looks like this is the end of the road for VY.

Let’s look back on happier times of Vince Young’s career:

#Dreamteam: Vince Young Signs With Buffalo Bills

One Man Got Signed

All in all, one man got signed. That’s right only one. That man was 22 year old receiver Nathan Slaughter out of West Texas A&M who signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Good for Vince. Rumors were he was having some financial problems, but he stayed on his grind and got back in the league.

It is not often a player Vince’s age goes back through the college scouting process, preseason, and actually makes it all the way back. Big credit to Vince for sticking with it.

This should serve as a blueprint for all of the quarterbacks who fall off, you can get back if you work hard and are willing to prove yourself.

Vince Young has learned this the hard way. Due to taking out a loan he could not pay once the NFL deemed him unworthy of a contract, all of Vince’s stuff will be auctioned off shortly down in Texas.

Cold world.

Young took out a $1.9 million loan during the 2011 lockout from Pro Player Funding of New York. However, he defaulted on that loan, and the next summer, Pro Player obtained a $1.69 million judgment against him. Attorneys for Pro Player called the inventory and sale of Young’s possessions a last resort, according to local Houston news station KHOU. Young would be able to keep $60,000 in personal possessions, but the remainder of his furniture, artwork, memorabilia and other possessions would go on the auction block.

Many, many, many questions with little or no answers. In a way it seems like he was destined to be an enigma from day one. A few weeks ago the near 30 quarterback even attended a University of Texas Pro Day…. as a competitor. The reviews were solid but no one gave him a shot.

VY may be on to the next phase in his life but at least he went out swinging and accomplished his college degree which is a positive note to go out on (if it’s over):

“This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for,” Young told Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com on Thursday night. “I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom’s face.”

The comeback story of Vince Young has been pretty sad. He was once a rookie-of-the-year and Pro Bowler, only to be cast of the Titans faster than someone on Survivor. Since then he has had short stops in Philly and Buffalo where he was most noted for coining the term “Dream Team.”

No one has seen Vince Young on a football field since Buffalo cut him last August but word is that VY has stayed in shape and returned to Texas. He is finishing up his degree and raising his family which is always good to hear.

However as far as the NFL goes, that phone has not been ringing….. until now. Word is that the Raiders are having discussions about bringing in Vince for a workout:

Young is in talks with the Raiders about visiting them for a workout, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Rapoport cautioned that those talks are “preliminary,” so we’re probably not going to be seeing Young in the Silver and Black any time soon.

It would be really good to see Vince back in the league. If even as a backup.

If you are young and have never seen that game, please do yourself a favor and find it on Youtube or buy the DVD. You’ll see what I am talking about. VY was just the man.

Then… Vince was drafted #3 behind Mario Williams & Reggie Bush (Texans fans thirsted for Young) and was supposed to take the league by storm. It just never happened. Young was able to win games by freelancing but couldn’t pass well enough in the confines of an NFL offense to be a legit starter. He’s bounced around as a backup and now wants one more shot to get back in the league:

Young, who has been a free agent since the Bills cut him during the preseason, said in an interview with ESPN for Sunday’s Outside the Lines that he just wants some team to consider him, and any team that does will find out that he’s willing to put in all the necessary work.

“I made some mistakes. And when you have the type of mistakes that I have, being quarterback in the NFL, it can ruin your career. So right now, I’m trying to fight hard to give it another go, another shot,” Young said.

What do you guys think? Can Vince make it back or is it over?

On a side note…. where is David Garrard?

In the article, Yahoo writes, and I quote:

Newton deserves far more patience and, more important, doesn’t deserve to be lumped in with Young. Comparing Newton to Young is like comparing a youthful Monet to a child who paints by numbers.

Anybody who saw Young from early in his career knew that he really couldn’t play the NFL game. His passing skills were too crude and his ability to read a defense was non-existent. Worse, he couldn’t handle the workload or the emotion of the game.

While Young wasn’t a very successful NFL QB… you cannot deny that he had a way of making something happen with his feet. A quality Cam posses, as well as Tim Tebow, Michael Vick, Robert Griffin III, Aaron Rodgers…. and I could go on. But that is where the comparison ends.

The major issue with Cam Newton is that the Panthers aren’t running an NFL offense and are relying on Cam to make every game winning play. Last season Cam was a rookie and that strategy took the division by storm. This season everyone knows #1 is going to carry the ball anytime the game is on the line. Defenses simply dare the Panthers to make someone other than Cam beat them… and the Panthers refuse to accept the challenge.

Vince Young couldn’t be relied on to win games. He could make a nice run when there was space but that was about the end of his game changing abilities. Vince Young and Tim Tebow are much more similar than Vince Young and Cam Newton.

Young was winning games in 2007 (his second season) with absurd stats (one game in which he completed six of 14 passes for 42 yards and another when he threw three interceptions and zero TDs). The Titans won games back then by playing around Young and depending on their defense.

All in all, Vince Young was simply not that good. He never was a threat to lead the league in passing yards nor ever led his team in rushing touchdowns (his 7 tds his rookie year tied Travis Henry). He was simply a guy that could run. And that’s that.

Mario Williams, Reggie Bush, or Vince Young? Who would have thought that Reggie Bush would be the first to get a championship, Mario Williams would prove to be the best player, and that all three would be on their second (and third) teams by now?

Who would have thought that two out of the three would end up Buffalo Bills?

Well that’s exactly what happened today as Vince Young has inked a deal to backup Ryan Fitzpatrick. This may be a good spot for Vince. Backup Fitzpatrick, get a few reps here and there, and stay out of the spotlight. We know he certainly won’t be dropping any more “Dream Team” bombs in Buffalo.
