Drake Maye is an exciting quarterback prospect hailing from The University of North Carolina via Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Standing at an impressive 6’5″ and weighing around 220 pounds, Maye possesses the ideal size for a quarterback at the collegiate level. His physical attributes give him a clear advantage, allowing him to survey the field and make accurate throws over defenders.

One of Maye’s standout qualities is his arm strength. He possesses a cannon-like arm that allows him to make all the necessary throws, from short, quick passes to deep balls down the field. His velocity and zip on the ball give his receivers an advantage, particularly in tight coverage situations.

Maye’s accuracy is another noteworthy aspect of his game. He demonstrates the ability to place the ball where it needs to be, whether it’s hitting a receiver in stride on a deep route or delivering a perfectly timed pass on a slant route. His ball placement helps maximize yards after the catch and keeps the offense moving efficiently.

In terms of intangibles, Maye displays excellent football IQ and leadership skills. He exhibits a strong understanding of the game, making quick decisions and adjusting plays at the line of scrimmage. His ability to read defenses and anticipate openings allows him to exploit weaknesses and find open receivers.

Drake threw for 4,321 yards during the 2022 college season, along with 38 touchdowns to 7 interceptions on 66% passing.

Despite his physical gifts, Maye can further develop his mechanics and footwork. Improving his consistency in these areas will enhance his throwing motion and overall accuracy. Additionally, he could benefit from refining his decision-making under pressure, as sometimes he tends to force throws into tight coverage.

Player Comparison: When evaluating Maye’s playing style and skill set, he draws comparisons to former NFL quarterback Matt Ryan. Like Ryan, Maye possesses the size, arm strength, and accuracy to be a prolific passer. Both quarterbacks excel in delivering precise passes and leading their offenses with intelligence and poise.

Maye is a highly regarded quarterback prospect with a promising future. His combination of size, arm strength, accuracy, football IQ, and leadership make him an attractive prospect for collegiate programs. With continued development and refinement of his mechanics, Maye has the potential to become a successful quarterback at the next level.

Projected draft pick: #2 overall

After last weekend’s FBS vs. FCS slaughter, we are back on track in college football with some good match ups. As the Mock Draft HQ, of course we are interested in seeing which games will help boost draft stocks the most.

East Carolina at North Carolina
Bryn Renner hasn’t helped his draft stock much this season, but a weak ECU defense comes to Chapel Hill Saturday to end that. Ruffin McNeil’s Pirates are no strangers to shootouts due to their air raid offense and that bodes well for Mr. Renner who needs a good showing.

No. 6 LSU at No. 9 Georgia
You already know the story here- Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley are going head up with the vaulted LSU defense. It will be interesting to see if Zach Mettenberger can come through for the Tigers as well if the game gets close. Ultimately, this game may be the one that wins the Heisman Trophy for Gurley if he goes Beastmode.

No. 21 Ole Miss at No. 1 Alabama
Alabama is rolling downhill on the season (pun intended) and Ole Miss is one of the last formidable regular season match ups. This game not only is huge for AJ McCarron’s draft stock but also those of his linemen namely Cyrus Kouandjio who will see his large share of the #1 ranked incoming freshman: Robert Nkemdiche.

No. 23 Wisconsin at No. 4 Ohio State
Wisconsin is one of the best running teams in the Nation, as they are every year. It is going to be a good matchup between that offensive line and Ohio State’s defensive line to see if Buckeyes LB Ryan Shazier can stop Melvin Gordon and James White.

It is basically a no-brainer for Bernard to go ahead and enter the draft in such a soft running back year. That is exactly what #26 did when he announced today that he will be leaving Chapel Hill and taking his talents to the NFL Draft.

Here is what he had to say:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my three years in Chapel Hill and coming to UNC was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said Bernard in a statement released ahead of the press conference. “I feel like the best decision for my future is to enter the NFL draft this year. I want to thank Coach Fedora, this coaching staff and the previous coaching staff for putting me in a position to succeed. I am on track to graduate and I plan on coming back to earn my degree in the Spring of 2014.”

A team like the Bengals, Steelers, Falcons, and even Jets could all have their eye on Bernard. With his ability to contribute right away on special teams, he is going to get a lot of people interested.

I had a good source close to the program that told me of some of the things those guys were doing that are now public information and my first thought was, “Do they really think they are going to get away with that?” See there is a big difference between getting some free tats or a loaner car, and taking weekend trips to Miami like no one noticed #notsnitching.

Anyways, word is now coming out that Hakeem Nicks was ineligible during his last year. Apparently a tutor was doing his classwork for him. If you went to a D-1 school like YA BOY you aren’t even going to bat an eye at this as it is incredibly common… #notsnitching

“The investigation confirmed that the former tutor had committed academic fraud with an on behalf of student-athletes 1, 2 and 3 during the 2008-09 academic year and the summer of 2009. Regarding student-athlete 1, a review of email communications revealed that on April 21, 2008, the former tutor wrote conclusion paragraphs for five of student-athlete 1′s writing assignments in an education course,” the NCAA infractions report says. “By the time the violations were discovered, student-athlete 1 was no longer enrolled at the institution, so no further action was taken.”

That still wont take away from THE CATCH….

You can’t dance in the endzone, you cant dance before you get to the endzone, and you can’t even accept a free pizza or tattoo if you are an athlete. We’ve seen things as trivial as Demariyus Thomas getting busted for accepting $300 in shirts and pants AFTER he graduated. Now you can’t even make it rain at your own private party in peace. That’s what UNC WR Dwight Jones learned the hard way:

The University of North Carolina on Tuesday declared Dwight Jones, the Tar Heels leading receiver, ineligible for the Independence Bowl after Jones allowed his name and image to be used to promote a party in Burlington, his hometown.

NCAA rules prohibit athletes from allowing their name or image to be used to promote an off-campus business or for-profit entity. Jones committed a secondary NCAA violation when he allowed his name and image to promote a birthday party in his honor on New Year’s Eve.

UNC has applied to the NCAA for Jones’ reinstatement. Jones apologized in a statement and said the party has been canceled.

Source: Charlotte Observer

I can see where the issue is. The NCAA doesn’t like the fact that Jones’ is going to make money off his OWN IMAGE. But the thing is, if his athletic duties are fulfilled isn’t this a moot point? This isn’t like a Sophomore doing this then coming back in the fall. This is a Senior celebrating after his final game.

December 26th is Dwight Jones’ final day as a collegiate football player.

The party is December 31st.

Problem?

I don’t see one either.

This is just a shame, as the young man won’t be allowed to be around his friends on the football team, but you have to play by the rules. We saw the same thing happen last year when Dez Bryant had lunch with Deion Sanders and didn’t tell the NCAA about it. Any contact with anyone that can be considered an agent and you are toast.

I personally feel as though the NCAA is one of the most hypocritical governing bodies in all organizations in America. You have situations where AJ Green is in trouble for attempting to sell a game worn jersey, yet the NCAA allowed Nebraska to sell Taylor Martinez’ game worn jersey!

Long as that good ol’ free labor keeps working, right?

Don’t give me the argument about the tuition compensation because we all know that these players deserve way more in return for the billions of dollars they generate for their schools.

But that’s another topic for another day. Marvin keep your head up!

Greg Little and Robert Quinn, two of UNC’s most talented players are also going to feel the consequences of the NCAA’s investigation on UNC players and their alleged party in Miami with NFL agents.

On the field UNC is definately going to be hurt. Greg Little is their #1 receiver and Quinn is their best pass rusher. Both players could very well opt to go to the NFL after this season.

But back to the real problem… the NCAA has to investigate why these players feel the need to take benefits even though we’ve seen countless times (Reggie Bush, Maurice Clarett, Chris Webber, etc.) that it always damages the player’s reputation and career when found out?

Why are players still compelled to take that chance? Are they really being compensated properly? Is just tuition and board enough when coaches are signing million dollar contracts and athletic directors are negotiating multimillion dollar television contracts?

The new motto for NCAA should be “we can benefit off your talent, but you better not.”
