Too Early For a 2013 Mock Draft?
Yes. As I’m writing this mock it is August 7th, 2011 and the first preseason game of the 2011 season hasn’t even been played yet. As a matter of fact, the Hall of Fame game wasn’t even played this year thanks to the lockout. But hey, I’m crazy and I’m willing to write the most inaccurate mock draft on the net before two complete NFL seasons and an off-season happens.
Also, as I write this before the 2011 season, Tyler Bray is the #1 overall prospect in many draft critic’s eyes. Bray was just a true freshman last year but showed a lot of promise for a Tennessee program that seemed to nearly hit rock bottom after coach Lane Kiffin took his talents to Southern California. Bray replaced Matt Simms as the starter and made waves, leading the Vols to four straight wins while passing for a school freshman record 1,537 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just 7 interceptions.
If Bray continues to play on a high level in 2011, he will be on the radar as the #1 overall prospect and a Heisman candidate in 2012. Granted, there are two full seasons of college football that are yet to be played and anything can happen, but I do not think for one second that one of the $EC QB’s Tyler Bray or Aaron Murray will not be chosen in the top five. As a matter of fact the only QB’s I have going in the first round right now play in the $EC.
Anyways… on to the mock:
- Miami Dolphins – Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
This is assuming the Dolphins go with Chad Henne for ANOTHER 2 years and he plays like Chad Henne. Bray would be the QB they have been lacking for a long time.
- Buffalo Bills – D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
DJ could elect to come out this upcoming year but if he doesn’t then he stands to be a top 2 selection in 2013. The Bills are not drafting a QB. Let’s not kid ourselves.
- Cleveland Browns – Jeremiah Sirles, OT, Nebraska
Colt McCoy the real deal? He seems like a serviceable starter at best, and the Browns could do well to build an offense around and a line in-front of him before casting him off.
- St. Louis Rams – Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami
In the next 2 years we will find out if Jason Smith is the real deal or not.
- Denver Broncos – Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
The Broncos are going to draft a QB in the next two years. Don’t kid yourself. EFX is not in Tebow’s corner at all, and Orton is a above average QB at best, but not a franchise QB. If Denver misses out on Andrew Luck they are picking a QB in 2013. I’m currently projecting the Broncos drafting Luck at #2 in 2012 but that selection will change in my next 2012 NFL mock.
- Cincinnati Bengals – Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
I would sit down and total up Cedric Benson’s career carries from Texas up until now, but I’m too tired for that and I’m sure it would total up to damn near 1,200 career carries by now. He is going to be the next Eddie George in my eyes. One day, all of sudden, his body won’t want to do it anymore.
- Seattle Seahawks – Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Earl Thomas is great. But who is going to play next to him?
- Kansas City Chiefs – Xavier Nixon, OT, Florida
I acutally think between Cassell, Broyle, and Stanzi the Chiefs will find a starter that works for them. Now to solidify the line.
- Washington Redskins – Wes Horton, DE, USC
Rak and Kerrigan are going to be a nice combo at LB. But that defense could still need help.
- Oakland Raiders – Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
No Nnamdi = young CBs needed.
- Houston Texans – Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
The Texans have had bad luck drafting DTs but I don’t think they would stop selecting defensive linemen early in the draft.
- Minnesota Vikings – Robert Woods, WR, USC
Sidney Rice is a Seattle Seahawk and Percy Harvin has mysterious migraines.
- Jacksonville Jaguars – Michael Dyer, RB, Auburn
MJD thinks the Jaguars are trying to replace him… that is because no one believes your knee is fine. MJD might not even be a Jag by the time this draft rolls around.
- Carolina Panthers – Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
Is Everette Brown the real deal?
- Tennessee Titans – DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama
Cortland Finnegand walked out of practice on Friday 8/5/2011 due to a contract dispute.
- New York Giants – Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
Eli Manning is getting older and wouldn’t mind the Giants investing in young linemen.
- Philadelphia Eagles – Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
For all the talk of the Eagles winning 2011 free agency, they lost a key LB in Stewart Bradley.
- Arizona Cardinals – Keenan Allen, WR, California
Are they going to keep Fitz? Is Early Doucet a #2 WR? Too many questions with no answers…
- Detroit Lions – Tom Wort, ILB, Oklahoma
They need someone behind the monster Suh-Fairley tandem.
- Chicago Bears – Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
I think the Bears will draft a center in 2012, but even then if they don’t they will need one now.
- San Francisco 49ers – C.J. Mosley, OLB, Alabama
No more Manny Lawson, Takeo Spikes, and a nasty Patrick Willis trade Rumor is floating around.
- Atlanta Falcons – Cameron Meredith, DE, Nebraska
Jamaal Anderson was a massive draft bust, and depth is needed.
- New Orleans Saints – Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
I know they just got Martez Wilson and Clint Ingram. This is 2 years away though, one of them might not perform up to par or the Saints just may need depth.
- Baltimore Ravens – Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
All I see on the Baltimore WR depth chart is Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, and a bunch of young guys that may or may not work.
- Green Bay Packers – Ciante Evans, CB, Nebraska
Will C-Wood keep playing?
- New York Jets – Ronald Powell, DE/OLB, Florida
The Jets will need a OLB two years from now. There guys aren’t getting younger.
- Dallas Cowboys – Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Will #82 keep playing? Will Martellus Bennett stop rapping?
- Indianapolis Colts – Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
This is two years from now, the Colts will need to think about what happens after the Manning era. Manning may play 3-4 years after this selection is made, but even then there are issues about his neck and durability.
- San Diego Chargers – Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
Is Larry English a draft bust?
- Pittsburgh Steelers – James Morris, OLB, Iowa
Lamarr Woodley just got big money but is that in lieu of paying James Harrison another big contract?
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
I have the Buccaneers in the Superbowl in 2012 (not this season, but next.) That will probably be Ronde Barber’s last game and Aquib Talib is probably going to be on a different team by now.
- New England Patriots – Isaiah Johnson, FS, Georgia Tech
The Patriots have all the talent in the world, and I have them putting it together two years from now and winning another ring. Pat Chung is the real deal apparently, but I think Brandon Merriweather will be taking his game somewhere else by the 2013 NFL Draft.
