With the 2013 NFL Draft finally at its conclusion it is time to start looking at the class of ’14. We’ll start with the quarterbacks since that’s the most important position on the field.

Everyone knows that Teddy Bridgewater is one of the top players at the position, and we’ll evaluate him later, but for the first spotlight of 2014 let’s take a look at David Fales (pronounced fails).

Fales is currently the second rated QB on the board behind Bridgewater. Texas A&M sophomore Johnny Manziel is in the mix as well but we have him ranked slightly behind Fales.

Why? Easy: Fales has the arm.

The first thing that jumps off the screen at you is Fales’ incredible accuracy. Though he throws with kind of a weird spiral (he reminds me of Brady Quinn in that aspect) the ball gets there right on time between the numbers. Fales’ anticipation on deep-intermediate throws is already good enough to play on Sundays in my opinion. He doesn’t have the strongest arm but is adequate in that aspect.

If there is a limitation to his game it is his mobility. Not that he’s a stoic guy, David can actually move. However when he moves in the pocket nothing seems to happen unless its a designed move. Many times Fales gets in trouble trying to extend a play and loses yards when he should just get rid of the ball. I call it being “trapped by your own athleticism.” He’s got good mobility but he’s nothing like a Cam Newton or Teddy Bridgewater. If the lane isn’t WIDE OPEN, Fales shouldnt be running.

With that all said, I have Fales graded out as a TOP 3 prospect and the #2 QB. He’s a legitimate franchise player prospect. I compare David Fales as a better Jake Plummer with an Aaron Rodgers ceiling.

That has set a bit of a shock wave through the draft community. With the status of Robert Griffin III and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones up in the air the next quarterback on the list if you are looking is Arizona’s Nick Foles.

Foles is a hotly debated subject back and forward between many draft fans. The thing is, Foles could easily go in the 3rd round in the 2012 draft. However if Barkley, Griffin III, and Jones all stay in school then Foles could also easily go in the middle of the first round. Yes, the opinions on Foles range that far and wide.

What are my thoughts on this?

I believe that Foles will go somewhere in the top 55 picks. That puts him around the 18-20 spot in the second round. As a Broncos fan it does concern me that some believe that Foles could go in the middle of the first round because for some strange reason I believe John Elway is dying to draft Nick Foles. From eveything that I’ve read the Broncos seem really interested in Foles. Then again, they were also really interested in Cam Newton and you see how that panned out.

What is Foles’ value as a pro?

As you may know I do not like “scouting reports” because for the most part they are wrong. I will just tell you my opinion on Foles from the limited action I got to see of him.

To me he is a classic drop back passer. He isn’t going to run around the field like the “new wave” of QB’s. Foles is going to sit back comfortable in the pocket. Sometimes maybe a little too comfortable if you ask me. At 6’4 he is a huge target for defenders and he has a tendency to lock on to his primary target and wait for him to get open.

I am not sure if that is a product of Arizona’s scheme, or if Foles simply doesn’t like to look for his second and third options. Either way that is a very correctable problem. Mechanically he is very sound, and a near 70% passer. Though it was in the Pac 12, that accuracy is nothing to sneeze at. That may be the main reason the Broncos are so interested.

So where will Foles go in the draft?

All in all, I believe he goes in the top half of the second round. I think a team like Seattle or Kansas City that may not necessarily want to spend a top 10 pick on a QB will take him in the second round and develop him behind a veteran.

I’ve been following a few prospects really closely lately in preparing for my next mock draft coming up, and among the guys that I wanted to really get an idea of their game is Kellen Moore. He is one of the more interesting prospects if you ask me.

Now on first look, a lot of people will dismiss him as a 190 lb 6’1 QB who simply won’t make it. But when you look at his yardage totals you have to respect the guy for what he’s done at Boise State of all places. Kellen has thrown for over 3500 yards, 30 plus tds and less than 10 interceptions each of the past two seasons.

The problem with “scouting” him (if that’s what you want to call it, I don’t do scouting reports on guys its kinda pointless) is Boise’s system. Its a spread offense. And we all know spread offense produce the Timmy Chang’s of the world.

Just because you can throw for a lot of yards in college means nothing to the NFL. They look for accuracy, the complexity of the throws you’re making, and the reads you have to make, among many other things.

To me, Moore definitely has talent there. He has shown accuracy on short routes, and a nice touch on his longer passes. If you’ve ever watched a Boise State game though, you’ll realize that most of the throws Moore is asked to make are short throws. If he has thrown a pass that’s gone over 25 yards in the air I haven’t seen it yet.

Due to that I have to say his NFL comparison is Chad Pennington, and that is not an insult at all. Chad is actually a very good quarterback when he is healthy, he just doesn’t have the type of arm that makes a defense respect him. I believe Kellen is quite comparable in that aspect. However Chad has shown you can still be pretty successful without it.

I believe Moore will grade out as a 3rd or 4th round prospect. The main thing that will hurt him is his size, and the fact that he’s a spread system QB. He would be a nice fit as a developmental QB for a team that already has a reliable starter.
