This is very likely Shanahan coming for Joe Philbin’s job in Miami when they are both eventually fired at season’s end. It is interesting nonetheless. Would this be why Robert Griffin III seems uncomfortable at times with the Shanahans?

Here is how the decision was made:

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — With his NFL debut still more than two weeks away, Ryan Tannehill can already boast of an achievement unprecedented among Miami Dolphins quarterbacks: He won a starting job in his first training camp.
New coach Joe Philbin gave Tannehill the job Monday, meaning the Dolphins will have a rookie QB start a season opener for the first time when they play at Houston on Sept. 9.

With that said, it is Ryan Tannehill’s time in Miami. David Garrard has announced he will not be ready for the season opener due to knee surgery. If Tannehill gets the start, he better run with it.

Former Jaguar David Garrard is in the lead for starter right now:

Beat writer Brian Biggane attributes Tannehill lagging behind David Garrard and Matt Moore to “untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic.” It should be noted that his pre-draft scouting report had a similar criticism. Biggane expects Tannehill to “continue his apprenticeship as the No. 3 guy.” The Week 1 job will likely come down to Garrard and Moore. It’s mildly concerning that Tannehill did not make a spring run up the depth chart considering his head start on OC Mike Sherman’s offense. Tannehill was the No. 8 overall pick in the draft. Expect Ryan to get a shot towards the end of the year, especially if the Dolphins are eliminated from playoff contention.

Here is what Ryan said in an interview, where he claimed to have no clue who’s interested in drafting him with a top 10 pick:

“I thought I would get some kind of feeling from the Browns or some other team, that they’d say something or hint at something that would give me a feeling on where I was going to go, but I really have no clue,” Tannehill said in a phone interview Monday. “I’m in the dark.”

Today on Mike and Mike, expert Todd McShay was asked why was Tannehill so highly rated in comparison to QB Brandon Weeden. McShay commented that Weeden’s completion percentage and touchdown to interception ratio was the worst in the draft under pressure.

He finished his commentary off with the prophetic statement:

Should he be? Of course not. With the combination of the new value top 5 picks have (thanks to Washington) and the fact that he’s the last highly rated QB that is on the market the value of that #3 and #4 pick has sky rocketed. Someone between Miami, Philly, and Cleveland, is going to make the bold move for the former Texas A&M QB:

…Philadelphia and Cleveland have “spoken several times,” but that could have just as much to do with Browns G.M. Tom Heckert and Eagles coach Andy Reid’s longstanding relationship as it may with Philly’s intentions to make a costly draft-day maneuver.

Brian Billick made the comparison today that Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill could have a bad career similar to one Jamarcus Russell due to being over-drafted. Billick said Tannehill “has classic miss written all over it” and said “he reminds me of Jamarcus Russell”.

“….both shot up draft boards based on how they looked in shorts.”

Ryan Tannehill is a QB with a ton of upside. He is athletic, throws a nice ball, and is still growing into the mindset of a Quarterback after being converted from receiver. However, for him to be picked 4th or 3rd in the upcoming draft is quite ludicrous at this point. Don’t get me wrong, it’s going to happen. I just do not believe it necessarily should.

Personally the thing that bothers me the most about Tannehill is the alarming number of second half leads his team lost last year.

• 3 INT’s against OK State, 1 Point loss
• 0 TD 1 INT against ARK, 4 point loss
• 3 INT’s against OU
• 3 INT’s against Texas, 2 Point loss

Any team that is drafting him has to know they cannot play him quickly. It has to be a slow development. But if you are Miami or Cleveland and you trade up to get him, your fans are restless, and the seats are getting hot for upper management do you have the time to wait?
