The metamorphosis from the Washington Redskins to the Washington Commanders has proven to be a contentious journey, sparking legal battles, cultural debates, and discussions on corporate influence. The latest chapter in this saga involves a lawsuit filed by The Native American Guardians Association, advocating for a return to the Redskins moniker.

At the heart of the matter is the association’s belief that the original name, Redskins, held a deeper meaning rooted in respect and honor. Chief White Calf, the figure depicted on the former team’s helmet, symbolized courage and integrity on the football field. The association contends that the team should continue to honor this legacy.

This legal action comes in response to alleged defamatory comments from the team, challenging the integrity of The Native American Guardians Association. The intricacies of the lawsuit add another layer to the already complex narrative surrounding the Commanders’ name change.

Critics of the name change argue that it is more than just a shift in branding; it’s a surrender to external pressures. Some point to the financial motivations behind the decision, highlighting that the threat of losing sponsorship from major entities like FedEx was a pivotal factor. In the world of professional sports, sponsor satisfaction often dictates significant decisions, including team names.

The name change itself, from a racial slur to a military-themed identifier, has triggered varied responses. While some perceive it as a step toward inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, others see it as a symbol of eroding tradition and capitulation to perceived political correctness.

The sentiment among Native Americans is not unanimous. While The Native American Guardians Association insists on the reinstatement of the Redskins name, it’s crucial to note that opinions within Native American communities are diverse. The first Redskins coach, in fact, was Native American, illustrating that perspectives on the team’s name have never been monolithic.

Former Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s staunch refusal to alter the team name in 2013, declaring “NEVER” in capital letters, underscores the profound attachment some had to the original identity. The subsequent rebranding to the Commanders, however, was a clear departure from that commitment.

As the legal battle unfolds and discussions on cultural representation persist, the Washington Commanders’ name change remains a microcosm of broader societal shifts. The clash between tradition and progress, corporate influence, and cultural sensitivity continues to shape the discourse around one of the NFL’s most controversial rebrandings.

It finally happened. The Washington Redskins are going to retire the name Redskins after Fedex publicly pressured the club to do so. This is amazing considering that owner Dan Snyder has publicly said he would never change the name but of course money talks.

It’s always been about money. That’s why Washington’s always had drama over the years regarding the stadium, training camp location, and even with specific player contracts.

According to Sports Business Journal, the #Washington Redskins will announce they are retiring the #Redskins nickname on Monday.

Well, at least the name will change and they can move forward from there.

My favorite idea is renaming the team to WFC Washington Football Club.

Here are a few ideas I mocked up in Photoshop for the Redskins new team identity:

Words are that those in management would like Jay to step down but there are also reports that Jay would like to be fired. Either way he’s at the end of this coaching stop and at this point how long he stays is likely tied to the language in the contract.

With that said it’s likely that Jay gets more money if he’s fired because he is benching his #1 and #2 quarterbacks this week to throw Colt McCoy out there.

The Washington Football Team has a lot of reflecting to do after a season in which they started four different quarterbacks and may have lost Alex Smith forever. Regardless of if he comes back in 2019, this team can no longer trot out a team that features Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, and Adrian Peterson as it’s main playmakers (what year is this?!) It is time to rebuild on the fly and catch Dallas before it is too late. I think all Washington fans agree with that.

Draft expert Draftp is back with his thoughts on the situation in DC.

Check below for his 2019 Redskins mock draft:

This is my first draft in a very long time so please bare with me as I need to get back in a groove. Redskins draft needs are QB, LG, S, CB, OLB, ILB, WR, RB.

1. Redskins: Drew Lock QB Missouri
Rd 1, The Redskins need to look towards the future and develop a young QB with talent. Can anyone but Dan Snyder argue this fact? Lock has all the tools needed to succeed in Jay Gruden’s offence.

2. Redskins: Chris Lindstrom OG Boston College
Rd. 2 The Redskins have a gapping hole at LG so picking a plug and play guard on the second day of the draft is a must. Lindstrom has been kicking serious ass in the Senior Bowl practices this week and his draft stock is on the rise. I would not be surprised at all if he goes at the end of the 1st round. In my mind the best scenario for the Skins is to extend Scherff’s contract and then move him over to LG then start Linstrom at RG. I really like the idea of pairing Trent Williams and Branden Scherff on the left side and I think Moses is a good savvy vet that would pair well with Linstrom on the right side.

3. Redskins: Johnathan Abram S Mississippi State
Rd. 3 The Redskins need help in the secondary both at CB and S. Abram can play both FS and SS, he has some good cover skills that can be further developed plus he is a solid tackler and a fierce hitter. He could develop into a solid starter sooner rather than later.

4. Redskins: Jaylon Ferguson DE Louisiana Tech
Rd. 3 The Redskins will need help at pass rusher because they are so cash strapped and probably can’t afford to extend Scherff and resign starting OLB Preston Smith too. In comes Ferguson who has some solid pass rush skills and could develop into a starter. He might even be able to win this job out right in training camp because of how weak the Skins are at that position.

5. Redskins: Khalil Hodge ILB Buffalo
Rd. 5 It is hard to figure out what the Skins really have at inside linebacker. I figure until the play improves in the middle the Skins will still need to invest in help. I would roll the dice on a tackling machine like Hodge can develop into a solid player.

6. Redskins: CB Jamal Peters from Mississippi St.
Rd. 5 I have the Redskins drafting CB Jamal Peters from Mississippi St. One thing I noticed while scouting Johnathan Abram is that Peters was in on a lot of the same plays. Scouting Peters further showed me a solid corner that has good speed and athleticism with solid NFL size. Could earn a spot on the team as a special teams guy or start the year on the Practice Squad.

7. Redskins: WR Denzel Mims from Baylor
Rd. 6 I have the Redskins drafting WR Denzel Mims from Baylor. Mims is another size and speed guy that has a chance to develop into an NFL contributor at some point but he will need a year or so on the Practice Squad to further develop his skills.

8. Redskins: Bryce Love RB Stanford
Rd. 7 I have the Redskins drafting yet another running back. Love has fallen down the draft boards as of late but a player with his speed can make a big splash as a potential replacement for the often injured Chris Thompson. If nothing else Love will be an insurance policy just in case CT can’t go again this season. The Redskins can not afford to keep so many injury prone players on their roster if they truly want to compete in the NFC East next season.

Dan Snyder has completely re-hauled this offense. After sending Kirk Cousins off to free agency, the Redskins decided to trade for Alex Smith in hopes his steady hand can lead this team back to the playoffs.

How will these picks work out in the long run? Here is Cowboysfan1993 with his takes:

1. Redskins: Da’Ron Payne DT Alabama

The Redskins are needing DT and they get Allen’s former teammate. Payne is a mountain with great strength and will choke a run game. He isn’t really a pass rusher, but he offers help for other guys. I like the player, but I feel the Skins could have traded back to get him. Grade: B

2. Redskins: Derrius Guice RB LSU

Guice is a great pick. He has great acceleration with surprising power. Character concerns are what cuase him to drop, but if he can clean that up this is amazing value. Grade: A+

3. Redskins: Geron Christian OT Louisville

I don’t know much about Christian, but this is where a lot of people had him going. He’s still fairly young, but he has long arms and solid athletic ability. Grade: B

What will the Redskins do? In one year we’ve seen DC’s team lose their speedy veteran WR and engage in a stalemate with QB Kirk Cousins that will likely end in Kirk leaving the team. With Matt Stafford just signing for the most QB money EVER, it is very unrealistic to envision Washington handing over even more money than they refused to this offseason to Cousins.

Here are the 2018 draft projections from DraftP, one of our veteran members of the draft community. Check back for more of his mocks during the year.

2018 Redskins mock draft below:

In this mock draft I’m working it as if the Skins finished with an 8-8 record that puts them at 16 in every round.

I have two trades, (1) The Browns trade up to get the Redskins Rd. 1 pick 16 and in return the Skins get Rd. 1 pick 26, Rd. 2 pick 58 & Rd. 4 pick 110.

(2) The Colts trade up to get the Redskins Rd. 3 pick 80 and in return the Skins get Rd. 3 pick 85 & Rd. 5 pick 159.

Team needs; QB, WR, CB, G, S, RB, C

1. Redskins: Quenton Nelson OG Notre Dame

(From Browns) Rd. 1, pick 26 The Redskins select G Quenton Nelson 6-5, 325 Lbs. from Notre Damn. Nelson is the top inside offensive lineman in the 2018 draft. He is a strong mauler that is very good in both run and pass blocking. The Redskins need an immediate upgrade over Shawn Lauvao who has been the weakest link on the O-line and is poised to become a FA in 2018. Nelson should be a day one starter.

2. Redskins: Luke Falk QB Washington State

Rd. 2, pick 48. The Redskins select QB Luke Falk 6-4, 225 Lbs. from Washington State. With Kirk Cousins future with the Redskins in question it only makes since that the Skins would spend a high draft pick on a talented prospect that they can groom into a future starter. Falk has a very accurate arm with solid deep ball strength, good mobility and pocket awareness.

3. Redskins: A.J. Allen S Northern Iowa

(From Browns) Rd. 2, pick 58. The Redskins select FS/SS Armani Watts 5-11, 205 Lbs. from Texas A&M. While Watts only has average size for the position, he does have exceptional range and is a fierce hitter. Watts can play either safety position and some corner as well. Outstanding ball skills, great speed, very athletic.

4. Redskins: Corey McBride WR TCU

(From Colts) Rd. 3, pick 85. The Redskins select WR Danta Pettis 6-1, 192 Lbs. from Washington. Pettis played second fiddle to 2017 1st round pick speedster John Ross but this year he gets to strut his stuff as Washington’s #1 wideout. Pettis has great speed in his own right and the ability to make acrobatic catches. Also, Pettis is a dangerous punt and kickoff returner. Deep threat.

5. Redskins: Frank Ragnow C Arkansas

(From Browns) Rd. 4, pick 110. The Redskins select C/G Frank Ragnow 6-5, 319 Lbs. from Arkansas. The Redskins currently have Spencer Long a converted G playing only his 2nd season at C penciled in as the starter who is set to become a FA in 2018. The Skins also drafted in the 6th Rd. of this years draft Chase Roullier from Wyoming which word has it the Skins are high on but in my opinion lacks the mobility to be a starter. That brings us to Frank Ragnow who has the size, speed and mobility to become a day one starter. Strong run blocker that gets to the second level to make key blocks. Good in pass protection, has a low center of gravity to help absorb bull rushers.

6. Redskins: Cameron Smith ILB Southern California

Rd. 4, pick 118. The Redskins select ILB Cameron Smith 6-2, 245 Lbs. from USC. Smith is one of the best linebackers in college football and he only falls to the Redskins here if he posts what I figure to be a slow 40 time at the combine. Smith looks like middle linebacker with excellent instincts. The Skins currently have 3 ILB’s set to become FA so selecting a solid player like Smith only makes since.

7. Redskins: Jacob Sobotka OLB Iowa

Rd. 5, pick 154. The Redskins select ILB/OLB Jacob Pugh 6-4, 247 Lbs. from Florida St. The Redskins are currently a bit thin at OLB. Pugh has good speed and high energy nonstop motor. Pugh could move inside if needed.

8. Redskins: Sony Michel RB Georgia

(From Colts) Rd. 5, pick 159. The Redskins select RB Sony Michel 5-11, 222 Lbs. from Georgia. Michel is basically a change of pace/ 3rd down back at GA. He has excellent hands and break away speed plus solid build to take a pounding if needed. The Skins currently don’t have a guy like this on the roster. He kind of reminds me of Redskins great Terry Allen.

9. Redskins: Pat Porter CB Jacksonville State

Rd. 6, pick 195. The Redskins select CB Priest Willis 6-2, 205 Lbs. from Texas A&M. Willis is a solid press corner with very good length and size. Highly competitive corner.

10. Redskins: Frederick Jones DT Florida State

Rd. 7, pick 238. The Redskins select DT/NT Joshua Frazier 6-4, 315 Lbs. from Alabama. The Redskins are still looking for a NT and although they are hoping former 1st round pick Phil Taylor can resurrect his career in Washington, at 29 and his long ranging history of injury doesn’t make Taylor a long term fit. Frazier is a solid run stuffer that has been a backup for his collegiate career is finally getting the opportunity to start for the Crimson Tide this season. His stock should rise if he can show some pass rush.

We are winding down the days until the 2017 NFL Draft. We certainly appreciate all of the mock drafts submitted this season.

Let’s take the time to highlight one of our most consistent drafters, draftp. Throughout the season he has submitted Redskins mocks on the regular, and this week is no different. Let’s see what players might end up in the Nation’s capital in 2017.

The Latest 2017 Redskins mock draft below:

With less than a week away the 2017 NFL Draft looms. For Redskins fans like me, we are praying for a solid draft but with no GM in place in Washington the Redskins fan base worry that mistakes may be made. I hope that someone up there in the Redskins management has a clue of what they are doing. This draft will be my last this year and I hope that some of them will be drafted by my Redskins.

Draft needs: ILB, OLB, CB, FS, DL, G, RB, WR.

1. Redskins: Haason Reddick OLB Temple

Rd. 1, Pick 17. The Redskins select ILB/OLB Haason Reddick 6-1, 237 lbs. Reddick ran 4.52 40 at the NFL Combine. He has risen up draft boards faster than anyone this year. With this pick the Skins would not only have a linebacker with the speed to play sideline to sideline but on passing downs they can allow him to pin his ears back and come in as and extra rusher which he excels at. He is solid in coverage being he starter his college career as a CB. I want this guy to be a Redskin!

2. Redskins: Tarell Basham DE Ohio

Rd. 2, Pick 49. The Redskins select OLB/DE Tarell Basham 6-4, 269 lbs. Basham ran 4.70 40 at the NFL Combine. Like Reddick, Basham has risen quickly up draft boards with impressive showing at both the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine. Basham has all the physical tools to become an elite 34 OLB but he can also put his hand in the dirt and rush the passer on passing downs when the Skins switch to the 43 alignment.

3. Redskins: Sidney Jones CB Washington

Rd. 3, Pick 81. The Redskins select CB Sidney Jones 6-0, 186 lbs. Jones ran 4.47 40 at the NFL Combine. Jones was once a top 5 CB and a 1st round prospect but an injury in his Pro Day has dropped his draft stock do to uncertainty over how fast he will recover and whether he will be back in time for the start of the season. This is a value pick for the Redskins.

4. Redskins: Marcus Maye S Florida

Rd. 4, Pick 114. The Redskins select FS Marcus Maye 6-0, 207 lbs. Maye ran 4.47 40 at his Pro Day. The Redskins new secondary coach was Maye’s secondary coach at Florida. The Skins should be very high on a couple of the Florida players this draft but Maye might be the best fit for the Redskins. Maye has excellent range and can play single high safety or the Skins can change up and play Tampa 2. Maye will WOW fans with his tone setting hits. Plays like a beast.

5. Redskins: Dede Westbrook WR Oklahoma

Rd.4, Pick 123. The Redskins select WR Dede Westbrook 6-0, 178 lbs. Westbrook ran 4.39 40 at his Pro Day. This Biletnikoff award winner as the nation’s top wide receiver has the speed to make opposing defenses take note to where he has lined up on every play. This will allow underneath routes room to develop. Westbrook has soft hands but needs to work on route running and developing an expanded route tree.

6. Redskins: James Conner RB PITT

Rd. 5, Pick154. The Redskins select RB James Conner 6-1, 233 lbs. Conner ran 4.65 40 at the NFL Combine. Conner is a big bruiser back that is at his best as a one cut runner between the tackles but he has shown he can also be and receiving outlet that is quite at home working his way out to the flats. Anyone that knows James Conner’s back story will admire his determination. I’m a big fan of his and I hope he has a successful NFL career. I hope it is with the Skins.

7. Redskins: Deatrich Wise Jr. DE Arkansas

Rd. 6, Pick 201. The Redskins select DE Deatrich Wise Jr. 6-5, 274 lbs. Ran 4.92 40 at the NFL Combine. Wise would give the Redskins another pass rushing option. He has the size to play both 34 or 43 DE. He would be a nice two gap option. Holds his own on running downs.

8. Redskins: Stevie Tu’ikolovatu DT Utah

Rd. 6, Pick 209. The Redskins select NT Stevie Tu’ikolovatu 6-1, 331 lbs. Ran 5.45 40 at the NFL Combine. Tu’ikolovatu would give the Redskins a true 34 NT able to hold his own against double teams. Tu’ikolovatu turned a lot of heads at both the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine.

9. Redskins: Ben Braden OG Michigan

Rd. 7, Pick 220. The Redskins select G Ben Braden 6-6, 329 lbs. Braden ran 5.04 40 at the NFL Combine. Braden can play G or OT. Quick feet, solid frame, NFL strong. Came from old school NFL power offense at Michigan. Good prospect to develop, has a mean streak.

10. Redskins: Joey Ivie DT Florida

Rd. 7, Pick 235. The Redskins select DL Joey Ivie 6-3, 301 lbs. Ivie ran a 4.97 40 at his Pro Day. Ivie has talent but was mostly used as a rotational player at Florida which was loaded with defensive lineman. Blue collar guy has a non-stop motor. Doesn’t give up on plays, plays to the whistle. Solid bull rush, has some pass rush moves, Needs to get better at using his hands. He might be able to carve himself out a spot on the rotation with a solid training camp. He needs to fight for it otherwise it ‘s the Practice Squad to start the season. Still there is talent to develop with this guy.

All Hail! The Nation Capital’s team looks to rebound on a season that showed much promise in 2016. Last year Josh Norman was the big addition to this divison but what does the future hold with the Giants making a power move in acquiring Brandon Marshall?

Can the Redskins once again compete for this crown or will the Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliot run away with it again? A good draft could help remedy things in DC quickly.

Draftp is back one again with his 2017 Redskins mock draft picks below:

The theme of this draft is Fast & Furious. Looking at the Redskins defense their is an obvious lack of speed and explosiveness across the board. This mock draft is going to address that problem. I traded back in the 2nd round with Miami and I got their 2nd and a 5th round pick. Draft needs: Edge, ILB, FS, DL, G, WR, CB.

1. Redskins: Haason Reddick OLB Temple

Rd. 1, Pick 17. The Redskins select ILB/OLB Hasson Reddick 6-1, 237 lbs., 4.52 (40) Reddick has risen like a rocket up draft boards since the Senior Bowl and really knocked it out of the park at the NFL Combine. Fast & Furious is how he plays the game. Will give the Redskins flexibility to move Reddick all around the defense and force opponents to game plan for him.

2. Redskins: Derek Rivers DE Youngstown State

Rd. 2, Pick 54. ( TRADE DOLPHINS ) The Redskins select OLB/DE Derek Rivers 6-4, 248 lbs., 4.61 (40) Rivers a small school guy has also risen up draft board extremely fast. He turned a lot of heads at the Senior Bowl and blew it up at the NFL Combine. Rivers is ideally suited for a 34 defense as an edge speed rusher but will also create havoc with his hand in the dirt in 43 alignment on passing downs. Stays low and can catch the edge against offensive tackles. Needs to prove he can handle NFL talent.

3. Redskins: Marcus Maye S Florida

Rd. 3, Pick 81. The Redskins select FS Marcus Maye 6-0, 210 lbs. 4.54 (40). The Redskins know all they need to know about Maye. His college coach is on staff now with the Redskins. Maye has the speed to play single high or can move over to play Tampa two. Strong hitter and solid tackler makes him well suited to play in the box.

4. Redskins: Ethan Pocic C LSU

Rd. 4, Pick 114. The Redskins select G/C Ethan Pocic 6-6, 310 lbs. 5.15 (40). The Redskins are set on the O-line but Pocic, another of many gifted offensive lineman to come out of LSU the last couple of years, may force a change at LG or C with solid play in training camp and a solid preseason. Pocic 6-6 stays low with solid balance for his height. A solid run and pass blocker, if he played more G at LSU his draft stock would be much higher. If the Skins can draft him here will be a real steal.

5. Redskins: Dede Westbrook WR Oklahoma

Rd. 4, Pick 123. The Redskins select WR DeDe Westbrook 6-0, 178 lbs., 4.39 (40). This Redskins currently lack a speed guy at wide receiver. Westbrook is a solid reliever with the speed to burn defenses. Smother route runner, deep threat that should be a nice weapon for Captain Kirk.

6. Redskins: Jarron Jones DT Notre Dame

Rd. 5, Pick 154. The Redskins select DT/NT Jarron Jones 6-6, 316 lbs. 5.33 (40). The Redskins need to add solid depth to the defensive line. Jones is limited in pass rush skills but does have a solid bull rush. He finds himself in the opponents back field on a lot of plays. Can beat double teams. Could develop into a starting NT.

7. Redskins: Charles Walker DT Oklahoma

Rd. 5, Pick 179. ( TRADE DOLPHINS ) The Redskins select DT Charles Walker 6-2, 310 lbs. 4.96 (40) from Oklahoma. At the NFL combine Walker really impressed me with his speed and lateral movement in pass rush drills. Walker’s draft rank has fallen over this last year do to health concerns, concussions, which derailed his final season. Team doctor will have to monitor his health a little more closely but if he can stay healthy he could make a real splash as a rotational player.

8. Redskins: Aaron Jones RB Texas-El Paso

Rd. 6, Pick 201. The Redskins select RB Aaron Jones 5-9, 206 lbs. 4.56 (40). Jones could be a real steal for the Redskins. He was at times the only real offense for the Miners. In 2016 Jones ran for 1773 yards and 17 TD’s and went 28-233 yards and 3 TD’s receiving.

9. Redskins: Nate Hairston CB Temple

Rd. 6, Pick 209. The Redskins select CB Nate Hairston 6-0, 196 lbs. 4.52 (40). Hairston a converted wide receiver, doesn’t have a lot on experience at the position but I liked what I saw from him at the NFL Combine plus he is Temple tough. He had to handle a lot of adversity while at Temple so I believe he can handle the jump to the pros. Average size and speed to play corner, loose hips, smooth change of direction.

10. Redskins: Lorenzo Jerome S Saint Francis (PA)

Rd. 7, Pick 220. The Redskins select DB Lorenzo Jerome 5-10, 204 lbs. 4.70 (40). Jerome had a solid East West Shrine Game that earned him an invite to the Senior Bowl where he had a wonderful week and showed up big time in the game but he had a very slow 40 time at the combine that dropped his stock like a hammer. The Skins will be looking for solid depth and special teams players at this point in the draft. Jerome will need to prove he can play special teams at a high level to stay on the team otherwise he might have to spend some time on the practice squad to develop before he gets the call up.

11. Redskins: Josh Tupou DT Colorado

Rd. 7, Pick 235. The Redskins select NT Josh Tupou 6-3, 253 lbs. 5.35 (40). Tupou is largely a developmental player for the Skins but his size is undeniable. He looked like a man among boys at the Senior Bowl. Needs to work on his conditioning, will be a practice squad player for most of his first season but next season he could be a real monster for the Skins.

The Redskins may end up trading Kirk Cousins, but for now it looks like he will be the chosen man in DC. If Kirk is there things will undoubtedly be tough on him as top receivers Pierre Garcon and Desean Jackson have left for greener pasture, giving the Skins a whole new receiver corp going forward.

Will young players such as Josh Doctson step into the holes left by the veteran free agents? We will have to see.

Here is draftp’s latest mock draft on how the Redskins will rebound in 2017:

In this my 3rd mock draft I’m looking to strengthen the defense and add a few key spots on the offense along the way. I started this draft with 10 picks but made a trade with the Bucs in the 2nd round and picked up there 2nd round pick and a 5th round pick. Draft needs : DL, FS, CB, ILB, EDGE, G, RB, WR.

1. Redskins: Forrest Lamp OT Western Kentucky

Rd 1, Pick 17. The Redskins select OL Forrest Lamp 6-4, 309 lbs. I see Lamp coming in day one as the starting LG for the Redskins. Lamp is the best OL available, he should add both power and athleticism, has a mean streak, can handle both speed and bull rushes. Uses hands well. Lamp will be a nice upgrade at LG and should stop the rumors of moving Trent Williams to guard. Shaking my head over that thought! Redskins fans should love that I am drafting another Hog. BTW, 2 years ago I called the Brandon Scherff pick as a guard. You do not pass on players like this!

2. Redskins: Raekwon McMillan ILB Ohio State

Rd. 2, Pick 50 ( BUCS TRADE ) The Redskins select ILB Raekwon McMillan 6-2, 240 lbs. McMillan is a solid ILB prospect that will try to prove he is a 3 down linebacker. At the NFL Combine he proved he has the tools now he needs to show the Skins he can play. McMillian is the 2nd rated ILB on CBS Sports player ranking and his film shows him as a run stuffer with good speed and instincts. He should be able to compete for playing time in his rookie year and possibly a starting job.

3. Redskins: Sidney Jones CB Washington

Rd. 3, Pick 81. The Redskins select CB Sidney Jones 6-0, 186 lbs. This is a value pick for the Redskins. Like CB Kendall Fuller last year, Sidney Jones draft stock has dropped do to injury. Jones ran 4.47 40 at the combine but torn his Achilles in his pro day and it is unknown how long this injury will keep him side lined. Before this injury he was looking to get drafted in the top 20 in the 1st round. Cat like reflexes, silky smooth change of direction, true cover corner that can stay with small speedy wideouts that burned the Redskins all last season. Jones is a future NFL starter.

4. Redskins: Marcus Maye S Florida

Rd. 4, Pick 114. The Redskins select FS Marcus Maye 6-0, 210 lbs. Maye is a solid FS that really lowers the boom. He has the speed to play single high or can mix things up and be very effective in the box. Solid 4.54 40 at the combine. Plus, the new secondary coach for the Redskins, Torrian Gray, was his position coach in college last season so the Redskins know exactly what they are drafting with him.

5. Redskins: Joe Mixon 6-1, 228 lbs. from Oklahoma

Rd. 4, Pick 124. The Redskins select RB Joe Mixon 6-1, 228 lbs. from Oklahoma. The Redskins take a chance on this troubled player. On the field Mixon is a difference maker and a potential steal of the draft but off the field he is considered a high risk and a lot of teams will not even put him on their draft boards. Not getting into Mixons transgressions but the Skins have been known to give second chances to other players with similar offenses. Mixon has good speed, great hands, good vision, potential every down back.

6. Redskins: Dede Westbrook WR Oklahoma

Rd. 5, Pick 155. The Redskins select WR DeDe Westbrook 6-0, 178 lbs. Westbrook has a lot of potential and excellent speed, ran 4.39 40 at the Combine. He can take the top off of defenses and that is something the Redskins lost this off season with the departure of D Jax going to the Bucs.

7. Redskins: Jarron Jones DT Notre Dame

Rd. 5, Pick 168. ( Bucs Trade ) The Redskins select DT Jarron Jones 6-6, 316 lbs. Jones has good size and is ox strong, gets great bull rush push but sometime may take plays off, a bit inconsistent but he should be able to compete for playing time he might be a candidate to play NT.

Is Kirk Cousins a franchise QB? That is actually a hot debate in NFL circles and for the most part it seems like the answer is a glaring “not really.”

Kirk still gets to prove himself on the field and currently the Redskins pretty much have to play him, or select another player in the draft. With Washington unable to come to terms with a reasonable long term deal it does seem like Kirk will be elsewhere and a new player will be at QB in DC.

But just who accepts the trade? Who do the Skins pick?

Those questions and more are answered in danjr’s latest 2017 mock draft below:

49ers cave and trade Kirk Cousins to the 49ers for picks 34(2nd rd), 109(4th rd) & 2018 1st rd pick. Pats Trade Malcolm Butler to the Saints for the 32nd pick in the draft. For other trades i use the trade value chart to help with compensation. Please leave comments. 3/23/2017

1. Browns: Myles Garrett DE Texas A&M

This is a no brainier. Garrett is the best pick in the draft so the Browns take him.

2. 49ers: Solomon Thomas DE Stanford

Now that the 9ers have their QB of the future they can afford to go BPA that fills a need. The last 2 years the 9ers have taken DL but in the new defensive scheme they will fit more on the inside. Thomas would be the edge rusher the 9ers desperately need.

3. Bears: Jamal Adams S LSU

I thought about Allen here but the Bears need an impact player in the secondary and Adams is considered among the safest picks in the draft. Day 1 starter and an immediate upgrade. Perfect fit for the Bears.

4. Jaguars: Jonathan Allen DE Alabama

The Jags have spent and drafted in a big way on the defense the last few years but Allen is a perfect interior pass rusher next Malik Jackson. Combine that with Fowler, Campbell and Ngakoue. This really could be a team on the rise.

5. Browns: Mitch Trubisky QB North Carolina

***TRADE***Browns trade picks 12 & 33 to the Titans for picks 5 & 124(4th rd) This trade is within 32 pts on the value chart. The Titans get back into the 2nd round and actually improve on the pick to #1 pick in the 2nd round while Cle still has an additional 2nd rd pick. The Browns struck out on Jimmy G so they MUST get the QB of the future if this organization will ever become successful. Reports are the Jets are very high on Trubisky so they have to leap up to get their man.

6. Jets: Marshon Lattimore CB Ohio State

I think the Jets interest in Trubisky is real but with him gone 1 pick ahead the season tank is officially on as they grab the best CB in the class, fill a huge need and hope they are in position to take a QB next year as the class looks to be much better.

7. Chargers: Malik Hooker S Ohio State

Pretty much going with every other mock out there. Hooker to the Charges makes too much sense so no need to overthink.

8. Panthers: Leonard Fournette RB LSU

Similar to the Chargers the Panthers have a huge need and the perfect player falls right into their lap. Fournette has drawn comps to AP and he will help lighten the load off Cam to do everything himself. He doesnt have the same skill set as Zeke but they Panthers are hoping he makes a similar impact.

9. Redskins: Deshaun Watson QB Clemson

***TRADE***The Redskins trade picks 17 & 49(2nd rd) to the Bengals for pick 9. This trade is within 10 pts on the chart. The Skins know that Cousins is gone after this season as he has already signed his tag. If he leaves in FA in 2018 the best the Skins do is get a 2019 comp pick so they get some value for him by trading him this year to the 9ers. They jump up ahead of the Bills, Saints and Cardinals who all could be looking at QB. Watson may sit for a year so maybe a QB like Cutler makes some sense on a 1 year prove it deal.

10. Bills: O.J. Howard TE Alabama

Howard has crushed the draft process and is solidly a top 10 talent. The Bills have to get some more offensive weapons and a TE is always a QBs best friend. Great fit for the Bills.

11. Saints: Derek Barnett DE Tennessee

The Saints got Butler for the 32nd pick so they have to focus on the pass rush. Barnett will be a nice compliment opposite Cam Jordan. QB is an option but I think the Saints are going all in on Brees’ last couple of years.

12. Titans: Reuben Foster ILB Alabama

Drops because of some injury history and positional value. Perfect fit in Dick LeBeau’s defense. CB might be the biggest need but this class is deep so getting Foster here is too good of value to pass up.

13. Buccaneers: Dalvin Cook RB FSU

.***TRADE***TB trades picks 19, 84(3rd rd) & 2018 3rd rd pick to AZ for pick 13. The Bucs cannot count on Doug Martin who will begin the year on suspension. If they target Cook they will want to jump ahead of the Eagles who have a huge RB need as will as the Colts and Ravens who could be looking at RB. They added a huge weapon in Desean Jackson but they will want to balance the offense and Cook is a homerun hitter that can truly be a difference maker as a rookie.

14. Eagles: Mike Williams WR Clemson

It would not appear that WR is a need for the Eagles as they added Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith but remember Alshons deal is for 1 year & they can get out of Smiths deal after this year. Also Jordan Matthews is in the last year of his contract so they get a long term weapon taking the 1st WR off the board in Mike Williams.

15. Colts: Haason Reddick OLB Temple

IMO this is a perfect fit for the Colts. Reddick can play all over the defense and line up anywhere in a 3-4. He will probably begin on the inside and but expect the Colts to get creative with how they utilize his skills. The Colts have to improve on defense and Reddick is a great building block to build around.

16. Ravens: Corey Davis WR Western Michigan

The Ravens have added some pieces on defense this offseason but they really need an offensive weapon since they lost Steve Smith and Breshad Perriman has not been able to stay healthy. If they want to be able to keep up with the Steelers offense they have to start giving Flacco some targets.

17. Bengals: Taco Charlton DE Michigan

I thought about taking Forrest Lamp here as they lost both Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler in FA but there should be some guards in Rd2. The Bengals had an awful pass rush last year so getting some new blood on an old DL is a must.
