After going to back to back AFC title games, this was supposed to be THE YEAR for the Jets. They were supposed to break through that glass ceiling, win the AFC, and win the Super Bowl. All with head coach Rex Ryan yelling “I told you so!” to any nonbelievers.

We all know that is no what happened. The Jets lost a key free agent in Braylon Edwards and replaced him with Plaxico Burress. A lateral move at best. The ground and pound game disappeared, and Mark Sanchez was asked to win too many games with his arm.

I wrote here before the season even started:

Here is a secret: The New York Jets quietly got a lot worse this offseason. You cannot replace a stud like Braylon Edwards with a slower, older, receiver fresh out the joint. You cannot rely on rookies on your defensive line. You cannot rely on Mark Sanchez and a bunch of receivers he pretty much JUST met.

And pretty much all of that has come back to hurt the Jets this year. They can still make the playoffs, but like 4 different teams have to lose. It looks like Rex will be hitting the couch early this year. “Cant Wait?”

I don’t want to sound like I’m piling on the Jets. They have just been very disappointing for the level they played at two years ago. Maybe a good draft is what the doctor ordered…

But it is true. The #11 overall draft bust out of Penn State, who JUST got released by the Bills yesterday already has a suitor in tow after clearing waivers. Rumor is that a few other teams like him as well. I don’t know how these guys can be so bad at their jobs but paid so well sometimes.

Aaron Maybin is a guy who obviously has the weight room dedication you want in an athlete. He isn’t going to eat himself out the league. But you have to wonder why it never clicked. Why couldn’t he crack one of the worst defensive lineups in the league?

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have offered Maybin, who cleared waivers earlier today, a one-year deal. Per Mehta, five or six other teams have made a similar offer.

Plaxico Burress was looking to continue his career after a 2 year prison stint and he will do it right in the same stadium he last called home. Going to the NY Jets, Plaxico will play his home games in the same city he did as a member of the NY Giants. It is a one year deal for $3 million guaranteed.

If Plax can get his legs under him he gives Mark Sanchez a big play WR to replace Braylon Edwards. If not then he is a redzone target at best and the Jets can grab a replacement in the 2012 NFL Draft. It will be one of the stories of the year either way.

The Jets also resigned Antonio Cromartie to a 4 year deal.

He announced via Facebook:

“It is time for the torch to be passed to the younger players. I am going to hang up the cleats! The mind is always willing to play but my body deserves the rest. Thank you for the opportunites to play Carolina and New York,”

Jenkins was always one of the NFL’s most intense and most dominant interior lineman, but once he started having ACL problems he was on the sideline more than the field.  You have to wonder what kind of push he could have gave the Jets last year if he would have made it all the way.

Jenkins retires a four time Pro Bowler.

Braylon tweeted:

“As the 2nd most hated man in Clev & a man of my word, today I will honor a promise made to 100 students in Cleveland years ago. The last of my Advance 100 students will graduate from my program and head off to college on scholarships that I will provide them with. Guys, enjoy and embrace your new beginnings and remember your promise to me, to reach back & help someone else along the way.”

Big shout out to Braylon Edwards for doing this.  The NFL ought to match his contributions but you know they won’t.

We’ve seen Chris Johnson, Andre Johnson, Tom Bray, Reggie Wayne, and now Darrelle Revis go into contract disputes this summer. The stars of the NFL are really beginning to make me wonder. Is this the last big money grab before the new CBA gets finalized? I don’t know.

But what I do know is that Darrelle Revis is on his island by himself right now.

Darrelle left Jets OTAs over a contract dispute. According to ESPN:

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is holding out from Thursday’s offseason training activity while in talks with the team to rework his contract, according to a league source.

I expect them to pay him and get him back into camp sometime later this summer.

On a related note, who else can’t wait for Hardknocks: NY Jets?!!!
