Republican Rick Brattin is working on a new bill in response to the University of Missouri protests. For those who remember, the protests saw student athletes threaten to sit out if the school President did not step down in response to his lack of response to rising racial tensions on campus. On multiple documented occasions were black students targeted and victims of hate crimes and slurs. There was even a thwarted campus shooting in response to the protests as well.

Lawmakers do not care though, in their world players should do as they are told and just shut up.

Remember when the NCAA testified in court and said that athletes are not employees and that playing collegiate sports was simply a privilege and hobby? Well apparently that arrangement is only good enough when these “student athletes” are weight lifting ball playing robots and not real human beings with social consciousness:

As a response to the protest/boycott against former university president Wolfe orchestrated by the black University of Missouri football players, Republican lawmaker Rick Brattin proposed a bill that aims to strip scholarships from college athletes who refuse to play for non-health related issues.

“According to the pre-filed bill, if it is enacted, any “college athlete who calls, incites, supports, or participates in any strike or concerted refusal to play a scheduled game shall have his or her scholarship revoked”. Additionally, the bill continues, “any member of a coaching staff who encourages or enables a college athlete to engage in behavior” prohibited under the bill “shall be fined by his or her institution of employment”.

Bill sponsor state representative Rick Brattin proposed to have legislation enacted by August 2016, prior to the start of next year’s college football season.

The university doesn’t receive state funds to operate athletic programs, according to the University of Missouri’s student-athlete handbook. “[T]hus, similar to private business, the Mizzou Athletics Department must operate solely from what revenue it generates,” the handbook states.”

If this bill passes through Missouri’s House of Representatives and ultimately becomes a law, college athletes will lose their scholarships if they ever go on strike.

After a tumultuous college career Dorial Green-Beckham had decided he’s had enough. The talented receiver of Missouri/Oklahoma has thrown his name in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Just in case you forgot, Beckham transferred from Mizzou to Oklahoma after getting in legal troubles for weed and alleged domestic violence. Dorial sat out all of 2014 after transferring to Oklahoma. So where does he fit in the grand scheme of the draft?

After the boom & bust success of oft-troubled receivers like Josh Gordon I think there is room for Dorial on the next level but definitely not with a first round pick. I would not use a first round/top 44 pick on him due to the risk (my definition of the first round extends to the second round pick 12.)

I know he and Josh Gordon are two separate people in two different bodies with two different skill-sets. However I feel like we were just having this conversation comparing Gordon to Brandon Marshall and look where that got the Browns. Green-Beckham is in that big receiver mold of Marshall or an Alshon Jeffrey but the risk may be too great to waste the selection on him, especially since there is no telling where his mind is at a year and some change away from football.

All in all I’d use a 5th round pick to bring him in and see where he’s at.

Bob Stoops said Dorial Green Beckham informed him a week ago that he intends to enter the NFL draft.

Former Missouri Tiger Dorial Green-Beckham has been dismissed from the team as you know, and not it looks like he may be forgoing the remainder of his college career. Once slated to attend FCS Eastern Illinois, Green-Beckham has had an alleged change of heart.

If Green-Beckham transfers he can play immediately. It is a possibility that he may not be up for another long college season and physically may not want to run the risk of injury. Therefore reports of him skipping out on the season are not too crazy:

Sources from FCS-level Eastern Illinois — where Green-Beckham was rumored to play next year – said the Panthers have not had contact with Green-Beckham and have been led to believe he’s leaning toward sitting in 2014.

As of earlier this month, the receiver hadn’t been released from Mizzou, which has been unable to discuss details of Green-Beckham’s enrollment, according to spokesman Chad Moller, because of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Efforts to reach Green-Beckham or his family have been unsuccessful.

As you know I am a big fan of college players getting their money as soon as possible but this is a unique case. Dorial has been in trouble multiple times and he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire after being the #1 high school recruit in 2012.

A good, quiet, stat-padded season in the FCS could really help him regain some positive draft momentum. Off talent alone Dorial is worth a 5th-7th round pick. If he comes back with his mind right the 6’6 220 receiver could easily find himself in the first two rounds.

You may remember Dorial Green-Beckham as the #1 overall recruit coming in from high school who chose to take his talents to Missouri. Well, it seems that not only is he great at catching football passes….

The Columbia Tribune reports that 2012′s No. 1 overall recruit Dorial Green-Beckham, along with wide receiver Levi Copelin and linebacker Tory Boozer, has been arrested for pot possession.

I’m just kidding by the way. Lots of doctors, businessmen, etc. indulge in that habit though I personally do not. I don’t judge the kid. Just don’t get caught riding around with Keisha next time Dorial.

“The officer noticed the individuals sitting in a car and went up and made contact,” Weimer said. “The officer observed the odor of marijuana. Through the investigation, the officer made the arrest of three individuals.”

Weimer said there were two others in the vehicle at the time, but the investigation determined they had nothing to do with the marijuana and they were released.

There is a long way between now and the draft with team pro days and the combine on the way. Gabbert will throw on March 17th at his pro day.

Can Cam Newton close the gap on Gabbert? Is he going #3 overall regardless? Or are both QBs going to freefall? Things are about to get VERY interesting.

Today ESPN debuted a new segment called “Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s Draft Lab.” Besides the goofy beakers and laboratory theme the segment was rather entertaining. (Note: ESPN if you’re going to make them carry beakers, why not make them wear lab coats too? )

Mel’s top 5 Quarterback list was the following:

Blaine Gabbert

Cam Newton

Ryan Mallet

Jake Locker

Andy Dalton

McShay ‘s list moved Cam down and elevated Jake Locker:

Blaine Gabbert

Jake Locker

Cam Newton

Ryan Mallet

Andy Dalton

Kiper even went on to say that in 5 years we will look back and see the best physical talent in the draft was Cam Newton. No arguements there, it could defnitely happen but we know how foolish Mel has been in the past saying things like Jamarcus Russell is the next John Eway….

Mel also said his red fag was on Ryan Mallet. Not because of the rumors you can read on forums, but because Mallet couldn’t lead his team from behind in big games. Fair, fair, I can definitely see that.

However I tend to lean a little closer to Todd McShay’s analysis. He said that Blaine Gabbert’s accuracy would make him the best talent out the bunch in 5 years. Though I am not sold on Gabbert at all, I have to strongly agree with Todd’s take that Cam Newton is the biggest red flag because he comes from a system that’s hard to translate into the pros and there may be maturity issues to boot.

Andy Dalton was the consensus “under the radar” pick and compared to Jake Plummer.

The NFL Draft will air on ESPN April 28, 2011.
