Michael Vick, a former NFL quarterback and Virginia native, has been named the new head football coach at Norfolk State University. This appointment marks Vick’s first head coaching role, succeeding Dawson Odums, who was dismissed after a 15-31 record over four seasons.

Vick, 44, is renowned for his dynamic playing career at Virginia Tech and in the NFL, where he became the all-time leader in quarterback rushing yards. His previous coaching experience includes serving as an advisor for the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football.

Expressing confidence in his leadership abilities, Vick stated, “I know how to lead.” His former high school coach, Tommy Reamon, praised Vick’s potential, citing his charisma and personal touch.

Vick’s appointment has generated significant attention, with some drawing parallels to the impact of Deion Sanders in college football.

Norfolk State University, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The university’s football program has a history of striving for excellence, and the appointment of Vick is seen as a move to elevate the team’s performance in the coming seasons.

Vick’s transition into this role is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the team, leveraging his extensive experience as a player and his previous advisory roles. His leadership is expected to inspire and develop the talents of the student-athletes at Norfolk State, aiming to build a competitive and dynamic football program.

The university community and fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming season to witness the impact of Vick’s leadership on the Spartans’ performance on the field.

In the video below Vick offers a few words of encouragement. It is nice to see that Vick is humbled to be able to pass the baton to Lamar and that he has nothing but support for him. That is really awesome to see. Much success to them both.

The deal is being reported as a one year deal worth up to ten million dollars depending on incentives.

The reason the Eagles and Vick had to come to a deal is pretty simple: Vick was going to draw interest from a thin quarterback market and the Eagles have an unknown commodity in Nick Foles right now. Chip Kelly’s system needs an athletic, fast quarterback and Vick pretty much fits the bill.

As far as the NFL Draft goes this means that the Eagles are not taking West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. Maybe he will go #1 to Kansas city after all. We’ll see how the market plays out.

We’ll do our best for now to project where your favorite free agent quarterbacks might end up in a game of “should, could, and won’t:”

Michael Vick

What He Could Do: Vick could stay with the Eagles if they elect to keep him (all indications are that they will pay the $3 million guarantee to keep him). He fits in Chip Kelly’s offense to a degree and would allow the team to find a backup and shop Nick Foles.

What He Should Do: Vick should request a trade or his release and sign with the Arizona Cardinals. I’m not going to re-write all the reasons why. Click Here.

What He Won’t Do: Vick won’t accept a backup position to Nick Foles or any other young player. He still feels he can play, and deserves a chance to start.

Alex Smith

What He Could Do: Alex Smith could be granted his release and sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. They need a quarterback and he has proven to be a winner and a great bridge for a rookie albeit a bit limited in his vertical passing.

What He Should Do: Alex should stay with the 49ers and hold the clipboard for Colin Kaepernick. He knows the offense, the team believes in him, and they are close to winning a Super Bowl.

What He Won’t Do: Smith won’t go away quietly. Even if he stays in San Fran expect a lot of stories about Alex wanting a shot to start.

Joe Flacco

What He Could Do: Joe played his cards right and bet on himself. Now as an unrestricted free agent in a WEAK quarterback year, Joe stands to cash in. What Joe obviously could do is ask for one of the richest contracts in the league at over $20 million per year.

What He Should Do: What Joe should do is play the market. The Ravens did not believe in him before the Super Bowl run and now they are going to have to pay out the nose for Joe’s services. Don’t be surprised if stories start leaking about Joe and the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have the cap room offer him the richest quarterback contract ever- and Joe should listen.

What He Won’t Do: Joe won’t leave the Ravens. Even though the Ravens are rebuilding, the only other place that has the cap room right now is Cleveland and the grass is not always greener on the other side. Get your money and keep winning games in Baltimore.

It is no secret. The 2013 Arizona Cardinals had a horrific season. As I type this the team is 5-10, with only one win coming after the month of October. As a matter of fact, four out of the team’s five wins in the first four games.

The biggest problem for the team has been their anemic quarterbacking. Kevin Kolb was pegged to be the starter but he’s only played six games. The team won four of the six he played but how reliable will Kolb be down the line? The reason Philadelphia traded him was because he got injured and then backup Michael Vick replaced him.

Kolb’s injuries opened the door for Josh Skelton and his 54% completion rate to take over. After throwing two touchdowns to nine interceptions the team turned to Ryan Lindley who didn’t do any better (52%, 0 td, 7 ints).

This display begs the question: How much longer will the Quarterback struggle last in Arizona?

If I am the Cardinals management I am making a phone call to the Philadelphia Eagles and that is to acquire the services of one man: Michael Vick and here’s why.

Statistically he is an instant upgrade. Vick has a respectable 58.5% completion rate, 11 touchdowns and 9 interceptions on the 2012 season. For his career Vick has 122 passing touches to 91 interceptions.

What Vick brings more than anything is a big arm for Larry Fitzgerald, and the big play ability at quarterback. Vick’s 301 yards in 2012 would have made him a close second leading rusher to LaRod Stephens-Howling who only has 57 more yards.

Larry Fitzgerald’s four touchdowns this season are a career low. You don’t think he would be excited to see Vick?

At whatever cost, the Cardnials need to upgrade the quarterback position. Kolb cannot stay healthy and while Vick has his share of injuries he always comes back sooner rather than later. His rushing yards alone are enough of a boost to this offense to win several more games.

We all agree that there is no quarterback in the draft valuable enough to take at the top 15 pick Arizona will land. There are other trade options but Alex Smith and Mark Sanchez are more of the same. There is only one Michael Vick. There is only one Larry Fitzgerald. There are only so many chances you get to put a tandem like this together.

Why not?

Right now the Eagles are 3-4 and a lot of heat is coming down on two people: Michael Vick and Coach Andy Reid. Vick eluded after the teams 17-30 loss versus Atlanta that he may be benched very soon.

The idea of Vick being benched two weeks after the team’s firing their former defensive coordinator is hilarious. It seems that Mr. Reid is going to do any and everything possible to keep that spotlight off himself.

The Eagles lost to the Falcons because (1) the Falcons have beat everyone that they have played so far and (2) there were a lot of blown coverages on defense. There wasn’t a safety in the picture on several of Atlanta’s passing touchdowns.

Does Vick have 11 turnovers? Yes.

Can the offense play better? Yes.

But the real problem is that the team starts slow, and doesn’t stop anyone on defense. Is putting Nick Foles, a rookie, in the game going to remedy this? I think we all know the answer to this.

The Eagles are 3-4 and still right in the hunt but it looks like they will self destruct before they get a chance to turn this season around. Mike Vick will be gone, Andy Reid will be gone, and we’ll be wondering which rookie QB the Eagles are going to draft with their first round pick and new coach.

Since everyone is going crazy on this “What if Mike Vick Were White” topic, I decided to take things even further. What if Mike Vick was still black, still from Virginia Tech, still athletic, but instead couldn’t play Quarterback in the NFL worth a damn?

Let’s go back in time. Back in 2001 draft the Atlanta Falcons were in the market for a QB with incumbent QB Chris Chandler looking like a battered veteran on his last leg. Just two years after being soundly defeated by John Elway and the Denver Broncos in the 1999 Super Bowl, the Falcons held the number five selection and were poised to select TCU running back Ladainian Tomlinson in the NFL Draft. The night before the draft the Falcons wrangled the 1st overall pick away from the Chargers and selected Virginia Tech QB, Michael Vick.

The rest was… history so they say. But let’s assume Vick didn’t pan out as well as he did in Atlanta. That means no playoff wins, and few exciting runs. Let’s assume Vick was another Jamarcus Russell level draft bust. What would have happened?

In our alternate universe, the Falcons get rid of Vick after three uneventful seasons and are poised to select in the top five again in the 2004 NFL Draft. Who would they have selected?

The Falcons need another QB

In 2004 the top QBs were Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers. The Chargers, already trading out of #1 with the Falcons three years prior aren’t going to miss out on “can’t miss” prospect Eli Manning and select him with the #1 overall selection again. Eli refuses to sign in San Diego and with his father orchestrate a trade to another team…. the Atlanta Falcons who have selected Philip Rivers out of North Carolina State. The Falcons give up a kings ransom of picks, along with Rivers and get the services of one Mr. Eli Manning.

The 2005 Falcons rebuild around an offensive core of Manning, Warrick Dunn, and in the 2005 draft they select in the 10-15 range drafting WR Mike Williams out of USC. Williams at the time is a “can’t miss” WR prospect in many’s eyes but fights weight and commitment issues and sets the Falcons back another three years waiting for him develop. Meanwhile Roddy White finds a soft landing spot going to the Eagles in the second round. Atlanta cuts bait with Williams after three seasons and in the 2008 summer sign unrestricted free agent WR Bernard Berrian to help the development of their young quarterback. The Falcons go on to remain a middle of the road team while Eli continues to show flashes of brilliance but is ultimately hampered by his lack of talent at WR.

Ben still dominates

Meanwhile, Ben Roethlisberger and the New York Giants win the 2007 Super Bowl over the AFC Champion Denver Broncos. Jake Plummer never has three turnovers in the 2005 AFC Championship, as the Steelers don’t make it without Ben so Mike Shanahan keeps the Broncos roster intact, and instead of drafting QB Jay Cutler out of Vanderbilt he selects WR Santonio Holmes out of Ohio State. The Broncos offense is no match however for the Giants’ combo of Ben Roethlisberger, Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Plaxico Burress.

After his three years in Atlanta Vick is left to put the pieces back together in his career. Not many teams need a QB, and are not willing to develop the former Hokie Quarterback who has been labeled as an athlete, and not a “real” NFL Quarterback. In the summer of 2004, Vick signs a free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns as a developmental WR. Vick enters in a training camp battle with WR Andre King from Miami and Richard Alston from East Carolina.

Vick tries out as a receiver

The Browns install Vick as a starting kick returner and punt returner where he earns a spot on the roster alongside college teammate WR Andre Davis.

Vick continues to develop and becomes the team’s starting kick returner. He has a decent year in 2004 and even though he fights nagging injuries he finishes with around 590 return yards. In 2005 Vick is beat out for his roster spot in preseason by another former QB turned WR, rookie Joshua Cribbs out of Kent State. In the summer of 2006 Vick’s career is pretty much over and after appearing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2006 preseaon Vick is cut and washes out of the league, never to be heard of again.

No NFL scandals, no breaking news, no comebacks. Michael Vick is pretty much left to his own devices after the 2006 NFL preseason. Without the spotlight on him Vick is still convicted of dog fighting after his cousin is arrested in 2007 but it does not make the news and Vick isn’t made a pariah in the media and made an example in the court of law. After a 12 month jail sentence Vick returns to Newport News, gets a job at Home Depot and helps out with coaching his local high school’s wide reciever squad.

This is just an example of how things could have went for Vick who as we all know is enjoying an un-probable comeback. What are the chances that things could have went the way presented here? We may never know… but we do know that Vick is extremely lucky that things have worked out for him and he still has a NFL career to salvage.

We now, twitter has exploded again because Favre may have a suitor in the Philadelphia Eagles. This makes sense because the Eagles are looking at trading backup Kevin Kolb reported for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and their only other QB is Kafka who doesn’t have much experience. When I say much I mean any experience. No one has as much experience as Favre, it would be his 21st NFL season.

Michael Vick has a lot of respect for Favre so it makes sense there. Not only is Favre a legend at the position, but he is also one of the few athletes who almost lost his career to go on to become a fan favorite and a legend. Vick could learn a lot from him off the field.

Vick tweeted this:

And then there is the money. Favre is going to get paid handsomely to hold a clipboard and drink gatorade for a few hours every Sunday. As I said in my previous article:

Don’t think for a second that Favre isn’t aware he can hold a clipboard and get around $2.5 million for it.Will he be back? Probably not. But if #4 suits up one more time don’t be surprised.

Many people like to dehumanize Mike. And that is your decision, but you shouldn’t throw stones in a glass house.

It’s easy to type “QB dog killer” and whatever other funny little monikers you have from behind a nameless, faceless, computer screen but before you do that let’s see who you are and look in your past. No one is perfect and Vick has accepted his punishment from society, done his time, and in my opinion is better off for doing so. Many people want to vilify this man, but in our system criminals have the right to be rehabilitated in our society so quit trying to rob Michael Vick of that chance.

Vick’s comeback off the field started when he signed a new deal with Nike, and now he’s signed new deals with Fuse Science and MusclePharm. The Fuse Science is a five year deal, and the Muscle Pharm is a $1.5 million dollar three year deal.
