The Miami Dolphins have done it. They have successfully traded up from one penny to a brand new house. That’s right, the Dolphins have completed a string of trades stemming from the Laremy Tunsil trade that culminated with a trade that brought Bradley Chubb to Miami from Denver.

This is how the trade breaks down in an extreme summarized version.

The Dolphins traded Tunsil to the Texans, then traded one of those picks to the 49ers who moved up for Trey Lance.

The first round picks Miami got from flipping their first to the 49ers resulted in the draft picks that Miami then used in three other trades.

Those trades were for the picks that became Jaylen Waddle, part of the Tyreek Hill trade, and now the Bradley Chubb trade.

Just a nice way to use the ammo and quickly upgrade your roster. Well done, well done.

BREAKDOWN OF THE TRADES BELOW:

Dolphins won the Tunsil trade even more. You essentially traded Tunsil for Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, AND Jevon fuckin Holland . The Tunsil trade created the Trey Lance trade, which yes, Miami won EASILY & is 80% of the reason why the Tunsil trade was so great. https://t.co/NFgEyfxlV0 pic.twitter.com/Rfquq3hN81

Or as a battle rapper would put it, “its not about the fall off, it’s about the get back…”

I started this article with those words because it looks like Miami Dolphin’s former #1 pick Jake Long is at a crossroads in his career. After being placed on IR in what can only be categorized as a down year, PFT is reporting that Long will be allowed to hit unrestricted free agency this summer:

Long, the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, becomes an unrestricted free agent in March, and if the Dolphins want to put the franchise tag on him, they’d need to guarantee him $15.3 million for 2013. That would be a huge investment for an offensive lineman whose play has declined this season in new coach Joe Philbin’s offense.

Chances are there will be MULTIPLE teams looking to make it rain on the 2008 NFL Draft’s first pick. Who do I think will be in the running?

Chicago Bears

Arizona Cardinals

Philadelphia Eagles

All in all, you’d have to say the Miami Dolphins had a pretty successful season, with all circumstances given. The 6-10 record was not very indicative of what the team accomplished this year, especially down the stretch. Matt Moore looked like a legitimate option as a starting quarterback, leading the team to a 3-2 record in the teams last 5 games. Brandon Marshall made his first Pro Bowl in Miami, and Reggie Bush eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the first time in his career. There is a lot of things to like on that offense going forward.

The Dolphins problem is finding a way to win more divisonal games. Going 3-3 in the division just is not going to get you a playoff birth. Yes, going 3-7 outside the divison is bad as well, but it starts with finding a way to beat the teams you play twice a year. There is a reason the Patriots always win over 10 games a year and that is because they have the division’s number. Miami’s road towards being a playoff team again starts with finding a way to have a winning record against the Bills, Patriots, and Jets on a year in and year out basis.

With that said, where will they go in the 2012 draft? Draft a QB to groom under Moore? Replace Hall of Famer Jason Taylor? Draft a CB? (Sportsdeck seems to think so!)

Dominator7808 put together a Dolphins mock draft for us. Check it out.

Drew Bledsoe.
When faced with this same decision of whether or not to take a QB in the 1993 NFL Draft, Bill Parcells went with Drew Bledsoe #1 overall to the Patriots. Just 3 years later, Bledsoe took them to the Superbowl.

4. Bill Parcells
Everywhere Parcells went in the league guess who showed up? Good ol’ Drew Bledsoe, his trusty #1 overall Quarterback. Drew was a guy that Bill drafted and trusted and Matt Ryan has those same intangible leadership qualities.

3. John Beck
The previous administration drafted Beck in the second round and the current administration owes him nothing. The pick is wasted, the decision was made. Ryan grades out much higher than Beck did and is a better prospect overall.

2. A 1-15 record in 2007
There is nowhere this team can go but up and it is the perfect low pressure situation to ease your Quarterback of the future in. Not to mention Jason Taylor wants to leave and Zach Thomas is gone. The fans need a new guy to rally around and Ryan is that guy.

1. The dollar dolla bills
Don’t get me wrong. They don’t want to pay #1 overall money to anyone and will scramble to give this pick to anyone but in the end its too costly to trade picks away and take the #1 player so Miami will be stuck. The money that the #1 player will get will be more than Mario William’s $60 million dollar deal and a similar contract to Jamarcus Russell. Most likely you’re looking at $30 million of that guaranteed as well. Why not invest the pick in a guy that will touch the ball every play and be the face of the franchise for the next 12 years? Sure Chris Long, Jake Long, and Vernon Gholston are all appealing but a pass rusher can be found later, and quality offensive tackles such as Sam Baker can be had in round two.
