LSU has secured a commitment from Zephyrhills’ 5-star cornerback DJ Pickett, pulling him away from the clutches of Oregon and Miami at the eleventh hour. This unexpected victory for the Tigers is a significant blow to their rivals and a major boost for their 2025 recruiting class.

DJ Pickett, widely regarded as the number one cornerback in America, had offers from a staggering 40 schools, including powerhouses like Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Ohio State, and Texas. Despite intense competition, LSU’s renowned defensive backs coach Corey Raymond managed to seal the deal, solidifying Pickett’s decision to join the Tigers.

“If you’re a DB and Coach Raymond is at LSU, I feel like that’s the right place to be,” said Pickett, emphasizing the impact Raymond had on his decision.

Profile: DJ Pickett Jr.

Pickett is a top 10 player in the 2025 class, and his commitment to LSU underscores the Tigers’ ability to attract elite talent. With Pickett on board, LSU’s defense looks set to be a formidable force in the coming years. This last-second victory not only strengthens LSU’s roster but also sends a clear message to other top recruits about the program’s competitive edge and the exceptional coaching staff led by Corey Raymond.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has clinched the prestigious 2023 Heisman Trophy, capping off a season that showcased his exceptional skills and resilience. However, Daniels’ acceptance speech took an unexpected and heartwarming turn as he dedicated his final words to his teammate Greg Brooks Jr. and his family, emphasizing a different battle Brooks is courageously facing.

Throughout the season, Daniels consistently wore a “Pray For Greg Brooks” shirt, exemplifying his class and compassion both on and off the field.

Despite the recognition and accolades, Daniels’ journey has been marked by challenges. Following his decision to transfer from Arizona State, his former teammates dismissed him with a callous directive: “Clear his sh*t out. He sucks anyways.”

Contrary to the dismissive statement, the ensuing records tell a different story. ASU, post-Daniels, has faced struggles with 6 wins and 18 losses, while Daniels, leading LSU, has achieved an impressive record of 19 wins and 7 losses.

The crowning moment of Daniels’ exceptional season was capturing the Heisman Trophy, joining the ranks of LSU legends Billy Cannon and Joe Burrow as Heisman winners. The triumph not only underscores Daniels’ individual prowess but also serves as a testament to his ability to overcome adversity and prove doubters wrong.

As Jayden Daniels etches his name in LSU history, his journey stands as an inspiring narrative of resilience, sportsmanship, and individual excellence.

Should Leonard Fournette play? That is the question on everyone’s minds.

Currently the LSU star is nursing an ankle injury which already has the peanut gallery turning. If he’s unable to stay healthy in the summer, why in the world should he play another SEC season and risk becoming the next Marcus Lattimore?

This is exactly the point Nick Wright brought up on his show:

.@getnickwright: Leonard Fournette shouldn't play another snap of college football. #TheHerdhttps://t.co/TA51iALRZ5

— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) August 16, 2016

The over serious tone aside, I actually agree. Why risk it? Because you love your teammates? You can love your teammates when you guys are training together trying to make a top draft position this spring. No need to go out there and get hit 200+ times when you have already proven you are the best at what you do collegiately.

Now I fully expect Leonard to play because he is a different type of guy, but I don’t think it’s a wise decision.

Let’s hope I don’t have to repeat these words…

Georgia running back Nick Chubb suffered a catastrophic injury on the first carry of the game Saturday at Tennessee. On a routine play, Chubb carried the ball and landed awkwardly on his knee after being pushed out of bounds during the play.

Luckily Chubb “only” tore his PCL and suffered no other ligament damages. The injury brought up thoughts of Willis McGahee’s horrific injury at Miami so Chubb was extremely fortunate in his situation.

Click here to see the injury.

So what does this mean for Leonard Fournette?

Fournette is stacking stats right now at LSU at a pace that reminds one of Adrian Peterson. For the 2015 season, he already has 1000 yards through the first five games.

Read that again. Five games. 1000 yards.

So how should Fournette approach his NFL future?

Simply put: he should play. There really isn’t anything he can do. As a true sophomore he is not eligible until the 2017 NFL draft. Some writers are saying he could go to Canada’s CFL next season and get paid to play but that won’t prove anything.

Scouts already know he can play and injuries can happen anywhere. Who’s to say he doesn’t get injured on the first carry of this hypothetical CFL season? Either way his NFL hopes are out the window over a few Canadian dollars.

Fournette should take Chubb’s injury for what it is: a freak occurrence that could happen to any player, in any league, at any time. It’s just another event that happened in the world that has nothing to do with what he’s trying to accomplish.

On the bright side Mettenberger is expected to be ready for the draft process and should be able to throw at his pro day. I’ve had him in the 30-45 range of the class and that hasn’t changed. A team in need of a developmental QB of the future or top notch backup should pick him in round two.

After last weekend’s FBS vs. FCS slaughter, we are back on track in college football with some good match ups. As the Mock Draft HQ, of course we are interested in seeing which games will help boost draft stocks the most.

East Carolina at North Carolina
Bryn Renner hasn’t helped his draft stock much this season, but a weak ECU defense comes to Chapel Hill Saturday to end that. Ruffin McNeil’s Pirates are no strangers to shootouts due to their air raid offense and that bodes well for Mr. Renner who needs a good showing.

No. 6 LSU at No. 9 Georgia
You already know the story here- Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley are going head up with the vaulted LSU defense. It will be interesting to see if Zach Mettenberger can come through for the Tigers as well if the game gets close. Ultimately, this game may be the one that wins the Heisman Trophy for Gurley if he goes Beastmode.

No. 21 Ole Miss at No. 1 Alabama
Alabama is rolling downhill on the season (pun intended) and Ole Miss is one of the last formidable regular season match ups. This game not only is huge for AJ McCarron’s draft stock but also those of his linemen namely Cyrus Kouandjio who will see his large share of the #1 ranked incoming freshman: Robert Nkemdiche.

No. 23 Wisconsin at No. 4 Ohio State
Wisconsin is one of the best running teams in the Nation, as they are every year. It is going to be a good matchup between that offensive line and Ohio State’s defensive line to see if Buckeyes LB Ryan Shazier can stop Melvin Gordon and James White.

Tyrann Mathieu is just out here having fun yall. We all know Tyrann got in trouble a few months ago after his homeboys threw his picture on a flier while still playing for the LSU Tigers.

Since then Tyrann has been on a redemption tour and has put the past behind him. He claims to have kicked the marijuana habit and has stayed out of the club during his rehab.

That is until now. According to BSO Tyrann tweeted out a club flier for a “1st Round Draft Pick Party.” Only problem is that Tyrann will not be picked in the first round. He obviously feels different.

It seems like he’s just having fun out here. Until he fails another drug test let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

Well, Hopkins showed he is no second potato.

After Watkins went out of the game with a sprained ankle, Hopkins went H.A.M. as they say. He posted a Chick Fil’ A Bowl record of 190 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. All of this against the mighty LSU Tigers aka “DB-U.”

On the LSU side, Bernie Logan has played well. He blocked a kick. Sam Montgomery has been disruptive. But Barkevious Mingo looked like the player that once was thought of as the #1 pick in many mock drafts. I’ve said it before, in another year he could easily be he #1 overall pick… the door still isn’t closed on that happening by the way.

Mingo, Hopkins… *whew* this was an instant classic folks. Make sure you find a replay of the 2013 Chick Fil A Bowl if you didn’t get to see it!

(Just in case you are wondering I’m liking Hopkins in the pick 30-40 range.)

Either way the Honey Badger and former LSU Tiger will be taking his talents to the 2013 NFL Draft.

According to reports Mathieu has made public his intentions to declare and enter the draft when he is eligible to do so in a few weeks. I believe this is a great decision. It gives him a goal, hopefully keeps him focused on the game and not the other stuff, and gives him time to start the character reclamation process now.

ESPN pundits Mel Kiper and Todd McShay said today that Mathieu is a late third-early fourth round type prospect. That sounds about right. With the way Tyrann plays it is hard to project him to an NFL scheme as a 5’9 170 lbs press corner. Has there ever been a press corner his size to make it?

I think that all in all Tyrann projects to a safety on the next level more than a corner. A comparison would be Ed Reed who really doesn’t have a position or scheme responsibility he’s allowed to just make plays. Mathieu has that kind of ability and would be better used in a similar role.

I personally project Tyrann Mathieu between the fifth round to undrafted because of all the off the field issues. He has first round talent, but will a team take a gamble on a guy who may or may not have his personal demons in check? We’ll see.
