The reason for Jackson’s request, according to sources close to the player, is the recent trade made by the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Browns not only acquired Watson but also gave him a fully guaranteed contract worth over $200 million dollars. This move has apparently left Jackson feeling undervalued by the Ravens.

Jackson’s current contract expires after the 2022 season, and he is set to earn $1.77 million this year, a bargain for a player of his caliber.

For weeks on end we heard that Lamar shouldn’t run his 40, Lamar shouldn’t enter as a QB, etc. etc. only for him to come in the league and pretty much tear it apart from day 1.

Tonight against the defending NFC Champion Rams Lamar threw for 5 touchdowns, yes FIVE! I think the debate is pretty much over now.

Well, before that happens we will have to see how the rest of his collegiate career plays out. Jackson took the Heisman last season and is currently averaging 500 yards of offense per game in 2017.

Then there is this take on Jackson’s NFL future from Rich Bartel, a former NFL backup QB who now serves as director and creator of business development for KANO Sports, which created a software app for long-term quarterback development: “To me he’s going to have to learn how to handle punts and kickoffs and become a slot or an outside wide receiver who can go back and take a snap [as a third roster quarterback].”

What shouldn’t be missed is that in the biggest game of his life Lamar Jackson lead his team back from a 19 point deficit. Behind the scrambling ability of Jackson, Louisville put up 26 unanswered on Clemson and came back to gain a one point lead.

Remember the Heisman isn’t a merit-based award (I.E. stats.) The trophy is a symbol of a selection into a club of the best players of all time. While Jackson may not finish the year with the best completion percentage or the most passing yards it is hard to deny what you see.

By my eyes there isn’t a better player right now than Lamar Jackson and it isn’t even close.

Defenses simply have no answer for Jackson’s quickness and speed in the open field. He reminds many of a young Vick, being a QB that can defeat you with his feet in non-scripted running situations.

Last year the sophomore quietly rushed for 960 yards and 11 touchdowns, but it is nothing compared to the 464 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns he ALREADY has this year. At this pace Jackson is going to put together one of the most impressive statistical seasons in NCAA history. His passing has even improved from a 54% completion rate in 2015 to a 61% rate in 2016. Very impressive.
