Rejoice Chiefs fans. You have a new head coach. And that man just happens to be the Eagles old coach. That’s right, after 14 years in Philly Andy Reid will be taking the mustache to Kansas City.

Reid and the Chiefs agreed in principle to a five year deal today. He is going to be formally introduced in a few days. With the coaching vacancy finally filled the team now needs to find a general manger and move forward with the #1 overall draft pick:

(Romeo Crennel’s) dismissal cleared the way for Reid to bring in his own general manager. A source said that will be either Tom Heckert, the former Eagles and Browns general manager, or Packers Director of Football Operations John Dorsey, who was director of college scouting in Green Bay when Reid was on Mike Holmgren’s Packers staff in the 1990s.

Reid has remained very close to both Heckert, who left the Eagles for the Browns after the 2009 season, and Dorsey.

–Reuben Frank/CSNPhilly

The best way to predict the future is to look at the past. Since it looks like Reid is leaning towards Heckert let’s look at the players they drafted together in the first round:

2006- Brodrick Bunkley

2007- Traded to DAL (Dallas selects Anthony Specner. Philly selects Kevin Kolb, Stewart Bradley, and C.J. Gaddis.)

2008- Traded to CAR (Carolina selects Jeff Otah)

2009- Jeremy Maclin

So from their history it looks like if Heckert and Reid like a player that is rated lower, or gets a decent offer they are more than likely to trade down. If they don’t get any offers or cannot complete a trade they will likely stay put and select the highest rated player on the board (remember Maclin fell to 18 after being expected to go top 7 to Oakland.)

This to me says that Luke Joeckel, Star Lotulelei and Jarvis Jones could VERY well be in the plans for the #1 draft pick. I would not be surprised at all if they passed on Geno Smith. I’m not ready to start mocking Geno out of the #1 spot but boy does the Heckert/Reid combo make it interesting.

However, they did not. In an interview with SportsRadioInterviews.com Chiefs GM Scott Pioli says there was a reason: the Chiefs already have a good QB on the roster.

I think we have three good quarterbacks. I think the guy who’s set to be our starting quarterback is a good quarterback, he’s a good starting NFL quarterback. . . . I think as he gets more opportunities, Matt is gonna continue to show people that he’s a good NFL quarterback. It’s interesting. I’ve been out and about town with my family, and I talk to fans, you talk to fans, you hear different things, and there’s a lot of times where I hear from people — there’s people out there that don’t understand the criticism of Matt, or this growing groundswell in pockets of Matt allegedly not being a good enough quarterback.

All I have in response to this:

Rumors were that Kyle Orton was looking to go back to the Chicago Bears who need a veteran to fill in for an injured Jay Cutler. That plan has been thwarted by the Kansas City Chiefs. Orton was claimed and is likely the Chiefs’ new starting Quarterback.

Chiefs awarded Kyle Orton on waivers. As per league source, two other teams made claims: Cowboys and Bears.

@adbrandt

For the Broncos going forward it goes without question that Tim Tebow will be traded this offseason to the highest bidder. Elway has his eye on another QB but it is unclear who. Matt Barkley? Robert Griffin III? Andrew Luck?

Their rookie receiver Jonathan Baldwin out of Pittsburgh has apparently injured himself or was injured (the details are murky) in some sort of locker room Smackdown! during the week. For those that remember, during the draft there was a little speculation as to whether Baldwin’s attitude, or should I say ego, would keep him out of the first round.

Ultimately it did not as the Chiefs are looking for a young star WR to put next to Dwayne Bowe. But if things keep going this way Baldwin could find himself in the Commissioner’s office. Here are the some what confusing details:

If Nick Wright of 610 Radio in Kansas City is right, the story is a doozy.

Wright reports that Baldwin will likely miss the rest of the preseason after injuring his wrist during a locker room scuffle with teammate Thomas Jones. Baldwin’s work ethic has reportedly been an issue.

“He’s as advertised,” a source tells Wright. “Diva, spoiled, doesn’t wanna listen. Can run a Go and a Slant, and doesn’t wanna work.”

Really?! You pick a fight with Mr. Extra Reps himself? Good luck. If anything pick a fight with the Punter or the 7th string cornerback. Not the running back with biceps the same size as most people’s head.

Baldwin is out for at least 6 weeks if not more, according to Adam Schefter.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a huge leap from being on of the NFL’s worse teams to one of the leagues more feared offenses in just one season. This success was hugely due to the development of Jamaal Charles, coupled with veteran free agent pickup Thomas Jones, and draftee Dexter McCluster. The three headed backfield was very tough to stop for anyone last season. Quarterback Matt Cassell also started to come into his own down the stretch, finding Dwayne Bowe 15 times for scores.

The Chiefs transitioned to a pretty good defensive team as well last season with the emergence of Glenn Dorsey (finally). Rookie Eric Berry played every bit like the next great safety, and Brandon Flowers was the best corner that no one talked about last year.

But what do the Chiefs need to do in the 2011 NFL Draft to not just get to the playoffs but actually win a game there? Here are their best options:

1. Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin

Yes, the Chiefs have the young Branden Albert on the left side but as of the time of this post, they only have two other tackles on the roster. Ryan O’Callaghan and Berry Richardson. No disrespect to those guys, but the Chiefs would be smart to take Carimi and plug him in on the right side if he is available.

2. Torrey Smith WR Maryland

The Chiefs have a great receiver with Dwayne Bowe but quick- name who is on the other side. Exactly. There needs to be another guy there to take the pressure off Bowe to try to recreate his 15 TD season. Chris Chambers and Kevin Curtis cannot be counted on to play big minutes at this point in their careers.

3. Titus Young WR Boise State

I know Titus Young isn’t on most people’s first round board anymore, but the Chiefs have shown that if they really like a guy they are not scared to select him a little early. Would Young be there later? Possibly. Can the Chiefs afford to miss on him if they think he’s the next DeSean Jackson? No.
