Johnny Manziel will go down in history as a cautionary tale, but at least he got a grip on his life before something really bad happened. Manziel has announced that he will no longer pursue a pro football career while on the mic at the Texas A&M spring game.

Here are the details:

Speaking to the SEC Network during Texas A&M’s spring game Saturday (h/t Connor O’Gara of Saturday Down South), Manziel said “football is in the rearview mirror for me.”

Manziel has not officially filed retirement paperwork with the NFL, but he’s been consistent in saying that a comeback attempt likely isn’t in the cards for him.

“In the past, probably, is the way I’d characterize it,” Manziel told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in June 2020 when asked about his football career (h/t Sports Illustrated’s Jenna West). “I’ve finally got to a point where I’m trying to achieve happiness in life, not happiness on the football field.”

Salute to Manziel for doing it his way.

It is time to give credit where credit is due. Approximately two years ago ESPN analyst Merrill Hodge was heavily criticized for coming at Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and his lack of elite first round talent.

Looking back, Hodge’s rant was 100% spot on. People forget that some were calling for Johnny Football at #1 overall!

Here is what Hodge said:

Johnny’s skill set had bust written all over him.

No team should take him in the first round.

Any staff that takes him, the head coach, staff and GM will be fired in two years.

Johnny makes bad decisions and NOT pan out in the league.

Graded him a 6th round pick at BEST.

No team should draft him in the first 3 rounds

All of these predictions were 100% DEAD ACCURATE. SPOT ON.

But yet people like Skip Bayless who said Johnny should have went #1 overall still get paid millions to analyze sports?

I’ll just hold my tongue there.

As far as we know now there was a domestic dispute and when the Ft. Worth cops got there Johnny Football was nowhere to be found. Helicopters were deployed OJ Simpson style and Johnny laid low wherever he was.

Now we got a few more details breaking. ALLEGEDLY Johnny Manziel threatened to beat up his girlfriend and “kill them both.” Wow, just wow.

Here are the details:

This is not good for a guy who’s trying to find a new home this summer. He’s said he has three teams interested. Hopefully they remain interested. We’ll see if he’s charged or not in the coming days. Remember these are just allegations and anyone can allege anything.

Johnny Manziel’s stay in Cleveland is up. As per multiple reports across every sports medium, for all intents and purposes the Browns are done with him. When the new league year starts they are going to cut him and move on.

This is good for all parties involved. A clean break is always healthy.

As a sports fan though, I have to wonder where Manziel will end up. We all know that if you have even a half ounce of arm talent the NFL will give you a second chance. This league needs to fill 64 quarterback spots at a minimum, and I guarantee you there aren’t going to be 65 guys better than Johnny Manziel on NFL rosters.

That means Johnny Football 2.0 will happen on someone’s squad. But where?

Here are the three teams Johnny Manziel has leaked:

Johnny Manziel has told people #Cowboys, #Rams, #Chiefs interested in him. Rams had draft interest, Chiefs have none. Thoughts, Jerry?

— Ed Werder (@Edwerderespn) February 2, 2016

The LA Rams opening with Johnny Football? Sounds good. But drugs and loose women are too prevalent in Los Angeles. He might be better suited at one of the other choices.

In case you have not heard, Browns QB Johnny Manziel is in trouble with the law again. Cops were called in during yet another domestic dispute between Johnny and his girlfriend.

For those that are scoring, this is the second time. The first time Manziel was in an “argument” with his girlfriend while driving and onlookers called the police. No charges were filed. Yet.

This time its more of the same:

Fort Worth Police Department Press Release regarding Johnny Manziel pic.twitter.com/n4Avlmxhs6

Hue Jackson is going to evaluate the situation but the smart man wouldn’t hitch his wagon to Johnny Football. Johnny is self destructing fast which is a shame considering he has a chance to still be a good quarterback in this league.

We’ll see if he can get it together but it definitely won’t happen in Cleveland.

I know what you’re thinking. No way. No way can Johnny Manziel be compared to Jamarcus Russell.

In this age where lazy armchair scouting has been boiled down to “black guy to black guy” or “white guy to white guy” type projections, I beg you to take the obvious modes of comparison out off the table for a minute.

Before the draft we compared Johnny Manziel to all sorts of people. Russell Wilson, Jeff Garcia, and Doug Flutie, were just some of the ones that made the most sense. But unfortunately the story of Johnny Manziel will not end with any legendary moments in the AFC or NFC title game. Instead it ended in…. Vegas?

So what does this have to do with Jamarcus Russell?

Simple.

Both Johnny Manziel and Jamarcus Russell were setup to fail. They came into the league already rich, already celebrities, and already the biggest name on the team for better or worse. Jamarcus Russell was one of the highest paid players in NFL history before he ever played a game… days after his 22nd birthday. Regularly stories would leak of Jamarcus being begged to be a professional, work harder off the field and keep a low profile. The team put their chips in Jamarcus and were determined to make it work.

Sound familiar yet?

We all know the stories around Johnny Football by now. He was already on Drake’s Instagram before he played a NFL game. He was the youngest Heisman winner of all time. The Browns for better or worse needed this to work. They needed Johnny Football’s brand on the field and off of it to boost the franchise. Instead, like Jamarcus, Johnny imploded under the pressure.

It’s no secret both of these men turned to drinking to numb the noises around them. Jamarcus became addicted to lean, Johnny seems to prefer 4Loko if his Instagram is any indication. Ironically it was a video of Johnny signing about “Dirty Sprite” that made the Browns begin to pull the plug on him.

Instead of judging these young men and pointing the finger we need to start thinking about why are there so many top draft picks losing their careers over drinking and other vices?

Could it be the pressure is too great at age 22? Are teams asking too much of a young man too soon? Is the celebrity coming too fast?

It’s probably some combination of all of this but its my conjecture that the Browns just like the Raiders failed their young QB. They failed to build a veteran team around him, failed to bring in key free agents on offense. You see that in the NBA a team like the Sixers under Jerry Colangeo took no time bringing in a trusted veteran Elton Brand to save third overall pick Jahlil Okafor from the exact same off the field problems.

You have to wonder why the Browns thought that bringing in Josh McCown to compete with and not mentor Manziel was the answer? For those that don’t remember the Raiders did the same thing with Jamarcus Russell…. with Jeff Garcia.

Sometimes we forget that these are still 22 year old kids under those helmets who don’t know how to handle pressure yet. For every amazing pass they can make spinning away from pressure in the pocket, there is a pressure from the game of life they don’t know how to avoid yet.

Hopefully Manziel, Justin Blackmon, Jahlil Okafor, and the many high draft picks that are suffering from these same issues can get help before its too late.

With the Browns officially wrapping up the 2015 campaign once again at the bottom of the league, all attention is on the disfunction in this franchise. Mike Pettine and Ray Farmer are gone, and apparently so is Manziel.

Pettine ruled Manziel out for the season finale due to “concussion protocol” but depending on who you believe:

A) Johnny Manziel never had a concussion
B) Johnny went to Vegas instead of checking into the protocol

All we know right now is that Johnny took a selfie on IG late last night with his dog and that today the Browns could not find him. That’s right, the Browns could not find their starting QB:

JFF1: Reported this on @SNFonNBC re Manziel: Browns require players in concussion protocol to be seen by team medic at 9 am on Sunday …

JFF2: … even if they’re not playing. Manziel didn’t show up Sunday. Browns couldn’t reach him on phone. At this point I can tell you …

JFF3: … Browns are so done with the guy. I will be stunned if he ever plays another snap for Cleveland. He wants to go to Dallas.

— Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) January 4, 2016

Looks like the Manziel/Cleveland/Pettine era is over. Not that it stood a chance. At least the Browns have the second draft pick and the Titans are the only team in front. Paxton Lynch is the obvious pick we will be mocking in our next mock draft.

What’s this? A grown azz man can’t enjoy himself anymore?

Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine says he will have a conversation with Johnny Manziel after another social media video of the quarterback surfaced Sunday night.

I understand Manziel has made mistakes in the past but if you keep treating him like a child he will keep acting like one. At a certain point the umbilical cord has to be cut between Johnny and Mike Pettine. Let the man hold his own for goodness sakes.

Hopefully Jerry Jones does what’s #BESTFORBUSINESS and finds a way to get Johnny back in Texas.

By the way, the song Manziel got busted for was March Madness by Future:

With the Cowboys suffering a 2-6 record, at the bottom of the NFC east, it seems like this is a season lost in big D. Tony Romo got injured and that was pretty much the nail in the coffin for Dallas’ 2015 season.

If only the Cowboys had a legitimate successor to Tony Romo on the roster ready to go…. if only the Cowboys drafted Johnny Manziel!

Seems like Jerry Jones is still thinking about passing on Manziel in the 2014 draft and may be looking to rectify that decision if (when) the Browns move on from the former Heisman trophy winner.

Here is what Jerry had to say about his agony:

“We had Manziel at the top of our board, (still) on the board,” Jones said. “So he’s a legitimate board pick and we’re sitting there and grinding through, . . . should we go for this opportunity to take a quarterback that high that’s dropped down and start getting ready in case for when Romo is not here or God forbid if he got hurt? That’s why I sat there to the last minute and stared at everybody and looked at everybody so that we could say, ‘Is this that shot? One has dropped to us?’

“Now you can ‘hindsight’ and look at how things have gone in Cleveland, but still that’s exactly why we sat there and had the agony.”

–PFT

Reading between the lines I would say that Jerry is keeping a close eye on what happens in Cleveland and will be the first call that Johnny gets when he’s released.
