Sometimes I chime in the comments and say “the Colts would never offend Peyton like that” etc. but I’m beginning to change my way of thinking when it comes to the Colts QB situation.

Anyone that saw the game last night knows that the Colts were a Quarterback away from beating the defending AFC Champion Steelers at home on Sunday Night Football. When the game was on the line and the Colts needed a play the most, Curtis Painter simply could not get it done.

That combined with the news that Peyton is done for the year is starting to raise eyebrows.

Owner Jim Irsay announced at a breakfast meeting with Super Bowl donors Monday that Manning will miss the entire season, according to WISH-TV in Indianapolis.

Perhaps this isn’t official just yet, but it’s a sign that the Colts have no expectations Manning will return.

Hmmm…. Peyton won’t play but he isn’t on the PUP or IR list? I guess there is still a GLIMMER of hope that Peyton can come back around week 11 and save the season. A glimmer that is simply unrealistic. If Peyton doesn’t play this year there is a good chance he will never play again. With that said, I have to say that yes it is time for the Colts to consider drafting a Quarterback in the draft. Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles, Kellen Moore, and Robert Griffin III are just some names that make be enticing if you are in Indianapolis right now…

He had two surgeries in about a year and has missed the entire preseason and almost every practice due to the injury. The Colts have signed Kerry Collins as a stopgap for the time being, and there are mixed signals as to whether Peyton will play opening day, or even this season at all.

Dave Calabro a respected and veteran Indy reporter for NBC 3-13 posted the following on Facebook:

Lots of rumors that Peyton Manning may need another surgery
and could miss many games. Bill Polian told NBC Sports he knows
nothing about that.....stay tuned its going to be an interesting season.

John Michael Vincent, reporter for 1070 AM The Fan, ESPN in Indy has confirmed Calabro’s story.

This.

Is.

HUGE.

The NFL’s active leader in games played, the man who IS the Indianapolis Colts may not even play a down for this season. With Kerry Collins they may have enough to win 6-10 games and sneak in the playoffs but that is a big MAYBE. Collins only joined the team hours before the final preseason game and was previously enjoying retirement.

If Peyton misses the season the Colts are going to have to think closely at drafting a QB in the 2012 NFL Draft.

This will be the easiest 32 in 32 blog post I’ve had to create. Before we get into the picks lets talk about what the Colts went thorough last season. Basically the Colts were a team last year that simply ran out of healthy players at the end of the season. Anthony Gonzalez, Austin Collie, Joseph Addai, Bob Sanders, were just a few of the big names on the Indianapolis roster that ended up on the injured list sooner or later.

Peyton Manning had another very good year. He struggled in a few games down the stretch, but you really cannot blame him. When you are throwing the ball to guys that you barely know that is going to happen. Next season Peyton should have another 30 touchdown 4000 yard season barring injuries.

On defense the Colts fluttered. Bob Sanders again was not healthy. First round pick Jerry Hughes gave them absolutely nothing in terms of production. It even got to the point where GM Bill Polian openly admitted he should have drafted Roger Saffold instead. And with that said… here is how he will correct that wrong:

1. Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College

If he is available, the Colts will not delay in taking him. This team is in need of a young lineman and Castonzo will be that guy if he is available.

2. Nate Solder OT Colorado

Depending on what you read, Solder will either be gone in between the 10-15 selection or he will be available later. If he is available later and Carimi and Castonzo are gone, expect him to be the selection.

3. Derrick Sherrod OT Mississippi State

Yes, you are getting three straight OTs here. Anytime when the GM openly admits he should have drafted someone else, you already know where his eye will be fixated. Granted there is still the need to replace Bob Sanders but that can happen in rounds 2 or 3.
