As you know, a lot of controversey is surrounding Cam Newton, his father, and the University of Auburn right now. Looking forward, I already wrote an article predicting where he might go in the draft, so today let’s examine why Mr. Newton may enter the draft.

Reason #1- Cam is a 21 Year Old Junior

Here is the thing, by draft time next year Cam will already be turning 22. If he decides to enter the draft after his Senior season he will then be a 23 year old NFL rookie. That certainly is not old, but when you are a 22 year old young man who technically isn’t allowed to be paid for your job which you perform better than anyone else in the nation you have to make a decision whether you want to put up with the crap for another year or not. Late night studying or lat night partying in an exciting city like Miami? Hmmmmm….

Reason #2- Cam is Going to Get Screwed Out the Heisman

Don’t get me wrong, I certainly think Cam has earned the Heisman trophy. If Boise State could have ran the table I believe that Kellen Moore would have been given the trophy by the voters. Right now, if Oregon wins out you may see LaMichael James be given the trophy, but he has his NCAA issues. The voters may be forced to give it to Cam, but I look to them to make a case for Andy Dalton or another player to avoid a Reggie Bush situation.

Reason #3- Strike Why The Iron Is Hot

Cam already has the examples of Matt Leinart and Jake Locker to pull from. If you are going to be a high draft pick as a Quarterback, you must come out. The chances of you having multiple electric seasons at that position is just too low to chance it. If you are a first round QB, you must come out in your Junior season these days.

Reason #4-The QB Market is About to Stale

In the next two years, every team that wants a young QB will have one already developing. Guys like Jimmy Clausen, Kevin Kolb, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, and presumably Andrew Luck will all be on NFL rosters waiting to be handed the keys one day. The demand is going to drop for young signal callers in a major way with only the most dysfunctional franchises in the market.

Reason #5- The Dollar Dollar Bills!

As the days turn with this Cam Newton saga, many different scenarios of how this all will play out are being discussed in the media. Namely, the situation being what would happen if Auburn were to win the National title with Cam Newton at the helm and he later be deemed ineligible to play? Auburn would most likely be looking at forfeiting wins and scholarships if Newton is ineligible.

Since the case is now in the hands of the NCAA this is Auburn’s dilemma. They have decided that Newton will be eligible and are taking the gamble to keep playing him. Time will tell if that decision will pan out (Reggie Bush would tell them not to hold their breath.)

I like to think about how all this fits into the scope of the NFL Draft. Newton is going to enter the draft. No ifs, ands, buts, or maybes about it. He is going to get the hell out of dodge asap.

So with Newton now going into the draft what happens? Obviously someone is going to pick him in round 1. You rarely (never) see a Qb 6’6 250 lbs that can do what Cam can. The only halfway decent comparison you can make is Ben Roethlisberger but even then “Big Ben” cannot elude tacklers the way Cam can. The kid is something truly special.

Who takes him? Minnesota? Zygi Wilf’s team does produce amoung the lowest amounts of revenue in the league and Brett Favre will be leaving… that would be a nice move. The Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers will be selecting in the top 2 and both could dump their starters for a once in a lifetime prospect like Newton.

But the team to keep an eye on folks is the Miami Dolphins. (What?!) Yes. Both Chad Henne and Pennington are done for the season and before Henne was injured he was benched for the 34 year old often injured Chad Pennington. The Dolphins also run the wildcat from time to time, and with Newton the constant threat of a dual threat Qb in the wildcat formation would keep defenses guessing all night long. To me the Dolphins would be fools to pass on Newton if they should have the fortune of him sitting on the board for them to draft.

Well short story short, Cam Newton played a flawless game and Georgia eventually could no longer keep up with Auburn. That would of been a nice story if it wasn’t for Nick Fairley.

I don’t want to paint this young man as anything he is not, but I can only judge from what happened on the field. On at least three separate occasions Fairley hit Georgia’s quarterback late and was not penalized for it.

The third time Fairley repeated his “I was blocked into the QB” routine he lunged his head at the back of Aaron Murray’s knee and looked to severely injure him. The bulldogs then responded with a designed play to take down Fairley and a near riot almost ensued after that. Three Auburn Tigers were ejected for throwing punches.

This is what happens when A) coaches coach dirty habits like hitting defenseless players and B) the refs do not penalize such hits. Nick Fairley and his Auburn coaches surely showed us what class is last weekend.

It just makes me think… if they would allow Fairley to break the rules on the field, then what about the off the field allegations about Cam Newton?

Just something to think about.

Cam Newton is currently under an investigation regarding his recruitment to Auburn from Junior college. That is all we know right now. So far a family friend/associate has claimed that he brokered some sort of financial deal between the Newton’s and Mississippi State and Auburn.

All I an say to everyone blogging, reporting, and regurgitating everything they hear is to hold of on passing judgment unless we know all the facts. You are no better than these agents allegedly paying players if you are going to accuse innocent students of taking benefits without any concrete proof.

If I were a Heisman voter there is no doubt that I would STILL vote for Cam Newton and I would not even hesitate. Anything that is going to come out is going to play itself out further down the line. If the NCAA and Heisman trust have to go the Reggie Bush route and vacate wins and trophies then they will do that… ONCE ALL THE FACTS ARE OUT.

Until there is a phone record, wire transaction, or confession that implicates Cam Newton has done the things he is accused of then they are just that… accusations. Let’s try to avoid throwing stones in glass houses sports media.

This weekend the #1 Auburn Tigers will face off with the Ole Miss Rebels/Black Bears (I’m not sure how they settled the mascot situation down there). Anyways, all eyes are on Cam Newton. He is the undeniable #1 Heisman candidate, and is quarterbacking this week’s best team in the nation.

So this is the perfect storm for Newton to go Vince Young on Ole Miss’ defense and hit the Heisman pose on National TV, right? You’re right, it sure is… but one other person has a LOT to gain from having a good game on the other side of the field.

Jeremiah Masoli. Yes, that Masoli. The same guy that was quarterbacking the Oregon Ducks two years ago before he was dismissed from the team and hustled the NCAA’s graduate rules to get immediate eligibility at Ole Miss.

I saw him on ESPN’s first take. He seemed like he really regretted how things shook out at Oregon and is really taking his last chance to heart. He had a very Mike Vick like “I’m sorry” demeanor as he spoke about his past transgressions.

But now that everything is behind him, Masoli can focus on impressing the NFL scouts. He is going to be in the 2011 NFL Draft, presumably as a quarterback, and if he has a big game don’t be surprised if you hear his name kicked around the mid rounds of the draft. The quarterback class this year is going to be very thin past the first round with very few prospects that NFL teams would take a look at beyond a developmental role. Masoli is interesting to NFL scouts because he has a ton of experience and is very mobile, but he also has those “character issues” to be concerned about.

Masoli you can help himself out a lot this weekend. This could be his time to shine.
