The New York Giants’ newest linebacker, Abdul Carter, is set to wear No. 51 after being denied his top two jersey choices—No. 11 and the iconic No. 56. While the debate over Carter’s request has stirred controversy, it’s also highlighted a broader shift in public sentiment: fans are increasingly questioning whether retiring jersey numbers still makes sense in today’s NFL.

Carter, who wore No. 11 at Penn State, also hoped to don No. 56—a number immortalized by Giants legend Lawrence Taylor. But both numbers are off-limits in New York, prompting Carter to settle for No. 51, a choice many now see as a clever compromise. Not only does it fall symbolically between 11 and 56, but it also fits his position and maintains a clean, classic look.

The situation sparked heated discussion on sports talk shows and social media. Some fans and analysts sided with tradition, arguing rookies shouldn’t even consider asking for retired numbers. Others called the practice outdated and overly sentimental, pointing out that the NFL’s growing rosters and positional number restrictions are making it harder to maintain such long-term number bans. One common refrain: “Retired numbers are ridiculous… just honor the legacy in other ways.”

Comments ranged from dismissive—“It’s just a number”—to philosophical. One fan even speculated that Carter’s affinity for certain numbers might stem from numerology, noting that both 11 (1+1) and 56 (5+6) reduce to the number 2—his birthdate.

The Carter case, along with other recent high-profile jersey number debates—like the Giants allowing rookie WR Malik Nabers to wear No. 1—has ignited a larger conversation around how teams honor legends. With some fans calling to “unretire all numbers,” and others suggesting limited retirement windows (e.g. 25 years), it’s clear that the league and its followers may be entering a new era of thinking.

Ultimately, Abdul Carter may have done more than choose a number—he may have sparked the beginning of the end for permanent number retirements in pro football.

Buzz is building around a potential blockbuster move at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft.

According to multiple league sources, the New York Giants may be in serious pursuit of the No. 1 overall pick, currently held by the Tennessee Titans. Several insiders left recent meetings with the Giants under the impression that trade discussions for the top selection are not only active—but trending toward likely.

The expected target? Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

Ward has quickly emerged as one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2025 class, showcasing elite arm talent, mobility, and the type of leadership NFL teams covet. If the Giants do pull the trigger on a trade with the Titans, all signs point to Ward being the quarterback they want to build around.

New York currently sits at No. 3 overall in most mock drafts, and while that still puts them in position to land a top-tier player, securing Ward would require a jump past other QB-needy teams. With Daniel Jones in Indy, the franchise appears ready to hit the reset button under center—and Ward could be the centerpiece of that new era.

While nothing is finalized, all eyes are now on the Giants and Titans as the draft approaches. A deal involving the No. 1 pick would be one of the biggest headlines of draft season—and potentially the first domino in a wild first round.

The buzz around Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders continues to grow, and it appears the New York Giants may be at the forefront of his fan club. Reports suggest that Giants scouts have fallen in love with the standout signal-caller, attending multiple games and practices to evaluate his potential as the future face of their franchise.

The speculation has sparked excitement and debate among fans. Some are already envisioning the 2025 NFL Draft announcement:
“With the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select… Shedeur Sanders, quarterback, University of Colorado.”

Why Shedeur Sanders Fits the Giants

The Giants have struggled mightily this season, exposing significant issues across their roster, particularly at the quarterback position. With uncertainty surrounding their long-term solution under center, Sanders offers a tantalizing mix of traits to stabilize and energize the team.

Elite Passing Skills: Sanders’ precise throws and ability to deliver under pressure have NFL scouts intrigued. His arm strength and accuracy, combined with his poise, make him a prime candidate to step into a rebuilding team like the Giants.

Toughness: One quality that has particularly impressed Giants evaluators is Sanders’ resilience. Behind an offensive line that has faced challenges of its own, Sanders has demonstrated the ability to stand tall, take hits, and still make plays—an invaluable trait given New York’s ongoing offensive line struggles.

Leadership and Charisma: Sanders’ composure and leadership skills make him a natural fit for a franchise looking for a player who can rally the locker room and take on the immense pressure of playing in New York.

Fans React to the Possibility

Giants fans are split on the idea of Sanders donning Big Blue. Many are optimistic, believing that he could be the dynamic playmaker the team has lacked for years. One fan remarked, “Throws from Shedeur Sanders are gonna get NFL teams excited—with the Giants’ O-line problems, his toughness to stand tall and deliver is a huge bonus!”

Others are more cautious, noting the numerous holes in the roster that need to be addressed beyond the quarterback position. “Shedeur isn’t getting this Giants team to six wins next year, sorry not sorry,” a skeptical fan tweeted, pointing to the team’s need for upgrades across the board.

Is Sanders to the Giants Inevitable?

If the Giants’ downward trajectory continues, they could very well land a top draft pick in 2025, putting them in prime position to select Sanders. His recent comments on the prospect of playing for New York, paired with his trademark smile, have only fueled the speculation further.

“It’s only a matter of time,” one analyst said, referring to the connection between Sanders and the Giants. “If things keep going the way they’re going, Shedeur Sanders will be a New York Giant.”

While there’s still a long way to go before the 2025 draft, the thought of Sanders leading the Giants has already captured the imagination of fans and scouts alike. Whether he’ll ultimately end up in New York remains to be seen, but for now, the excitement around this pairing is palpable.

Could Shedeur Sanders be the Giants’ quarterback of the future? Giants Nation will be watching closely.

As the anticipation for the upcoming NFL season builds, two star running backs, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, have found themselves embroiled in a contract dispute with their respective teams. As of now, both players have yet to sign their $10.091 million franchise tag tenders, leading to speculation about their attendance at training camp. This article explores the intricacies of the franchise tag, the implications of skipping training camp, and the potential consequences for the regular season.

Understanding the Franchise Tag

The franchise tag is a mechanism employed by NFL teams to retain their star players on a one-year contract, preventing them from entering unrestricted free agency. When a player receives the franchise tag, they are offered a tender, which represents the average of the top salaries at their position. In the case of Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, this tender amounts to a substantial $10.091 million for the 2023 season.

Skipping Training Camp – An Option for Unsigned Players

Since Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs have yet to sign their franchise tag tenders, they are not officially under contract with their respective teams. This unique situation allows them to skip the entirety of training camp without incurring fines, as players are only subject to fines when they are under contract and fail to report for camp.

However, the absence from training camp can have both positive and negative repercussions. While it gives players extra time to recover from injuries or work on personal training, it also means missing crucial bonding with teammates and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the team’s offensive and defensive schemes.

Regular Season Implications

One aspect of the franchise tag standoff that might concern fans and teams alike is the potential impact on the regular season. If Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs continue to hold out and do not sign their tenders by the start of the regular season, they risk losing game checks for the weeks they miss.

For every game missed, a player on the franchise tag stands to lose 1/17th of their tender amount. In the case of the $10.091 million tender, each missed game would cost the player approximately $594,176. Considering a 17-week regular season, prolonged absences could result in significant financial losses for the running backs.

Team Dynamics and Fan Sentiment

Beyond financial implications, skipping training camp and potentially regular-season games can affect team dynamics and fan sentiment. Teammates may feel disappointed or concerned about the absence of key players during crucial preparation stages, leading to a potential strain on team chemistry. Additionally, fan support may waver, as the absence of star players can dampen expectations and excitement for the season.

The standoff between Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs and their respective teams over the franchise tag tender presents a challenging situation for all parties involved. While the players have the option to skip training camp without fines due to their unsigned status, the potential repercussions on the regular season and team dynamics cannot be ignored. As the NFL season approaches, fans and teams alike eagerly await a resolution to this contract dispute, hoping that these talented running backs will be on the field when the action begins.

The move for the Giants was more about the money than an indictment on the player. Bradberry, 28, was set to make $13.5 million this season and would have counted as $21.9 million on the team’s salary cap. His release leaves the Giants thin at cornerback

The season of giving is here! Of course NFL fans want to know what gifts their favorite teams are getting. Who better to tell you than our community of draft experts?

Cowboysfan is back with his projections for all 32 NFL fan bases!

Check out the latest NFL 2019 mock draft below:

1. Cardinals: Jonah Williams OT Alabama
The Cardinals should do everything within their power to trade out of this pick. If they are unable to do so, they have a big decision to make. To take the top OT or to take the best overall player. In this case, Cardinals simply need O line help, and if it were feasible, they would draft 5 Offensive linemen in this draft. It’s an embarrassment how bad they are. Williams isn’t a road grader, but is techinically sound and has battled the best pass rushers out there. Williams would be a great addition and a building block for the Cards.

2. Raiders: Nick Bosa DE Ohio State
Raiders traded away their best pass rusher, and they have a chance to draft the next best one. Bosa is more athletic than his brother, and is NFL ready in terms of size. He’s technical, but also has a very good first step. Some may question the injury though.

3. 49ers: Josh Allen OLB Kentucky
I think the 49ers could definitely use CB here, but they have a chance to form a formidable defensive front with Allen as the primary pass rusher. Buckner has been good and Armstead is a solid guy as well. Allen helped himself tremendously. He was more of just a jack of all trades guy, but has developed into a true master of a player. You need a pass rusher on third down he’s your guy, you need someone to set the edge for your defense, he’s your guy. You need a guy who drop into coverage, once again he is your guy. Don’t make things harder, just take the guy and don’t look back.

4. Jets: Greedy Williams CB LSU
The Jets need talent everywhere, but I think they could and should add a CB to their team that can take advantage of the S play they have. Williams is a very talented CB. Has elite length and speed. Doesn’t have the best hips, but covers well. He needs to be more physical, and wrap up when tackling.

5. Lions: Quinnen Williams DT Alabama
The Lions need to get some help on defense, and Williams is a monster. The current NFL is starting to shift towards DT collapsing the pocket and Williams is a guy who can bull rush or finesse his way to the QB. He dominates every O lineman he’s played.

6. Buccaneers: Byron Murphy CB Washington
Bucs are one of the worst defenses there is. Defense should be the priority. Murphy in my opinion is better than Greedy, but he doesn’t play in a high profile school like LSU. Even though it is pretty high profile. He’s 6’1″ 190. He has good speed, but is more importantly techinically sound. He doesn’t give ground in coverage and will tackle.

7. Bills: Ed Oliver DT Houston
The Bills are somewhat devoid of talent. They could add a defensive player to build around. Oliver is a pass rushing DT, who can also play some DE. I think his overall size is a bit of a question mark, but it never really presented a problem in college. He’s not really just a finesse player, he can really bully guys when needed. He’s very talented, and he would be a building block for the Bills.

8. Giants: Greg Little OT Ole Miss
QB and O line are imply everything the Giants need. Their O line is bad, and unless they want to draft an average QB, they take the O line. Little isn’t as good as Williams, but he’s a big guy who is pretty nimble. He isn’t a road grader despite his overall size. He’s not as good in run blocking as I would think, but he’s a good pass blocker which spells good things for Eli Manning and the passing game.

We are at the midway point of the year. Around this time of the year the NFL season begins to shake out. Some teams are blowing it up like the Giants and Raiders, while some teams have hit a stride like the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers.

What if your team is struggling? Well, then draft season comes early. Check out what draft expert CowboysFan thinks your squad will do in his new 2019 NFL mock draft below!

1. Cardinals: Jonah Williams OT Alabama

The Cardinals need to find a way to protect Josh Rosen. You want to surround him with talent on O line and at WR. Sure I think Nick Bosa is a better player right now, but Jonah Williams isn’t a bad pick either. Williams has been a long time starter for Bama, and has obviously helped pave the way for the Bama ground game, but due to the emergence of Tua, we have seen him as a pass protector. His massive frame allows him to anchor with ease, and has great technique pushing rushers wide and away from the QB. No it’s not flashy, and no he’s not going to get stats, but if Josh Rosen ends up with 4000 yards passing next year, Williams will be a key reason why.

2. 49ers: Nick Bosa DE Ohio State

The 49ers just need to add talent all around. They do have Buckner, and have added Fred Warner, which has helped them, but adding an edge rusher like Bosa is a big deal. Bosa has natural bend and quickness as a pass rusher. He has an NFL body type. I have a higher grade than I had his brother, and I was very high on Joey. Bosa may have to answer questions about injury, and why he declined to play this season, but I don’t doubt his passion for the game.

3. Raiders: Quinnen Williams DT Alabama

Quinnen Williams is a big guy at 6’4″ 290 lbs. He’s both strong and quick for a guy his size. I’ve heard Dane Brugler compare him to Gerald McCoy. While I wouldn’t go that far, it’s not hard to see the potential this guy has. He is so fast off the line OG don’t really have the time to set up their blocks. He could improve as a run defender though. He isn’t bad, but you can see him being a little too eager to pass rush, he will abandon his assignment.

4. Giants: Greg Little OT Ole Miss

In this mock Justin Herbert returns to school which is why you see an OT here. Getting Greg Little, a talented and large OT to help pave the road for Saquon, and being the blindside protector of the heir apparent. Sure you want a QB here, but why reach and make things hard. Take a guy who can help your QB and be a big piece going forward.

5. Bills: Ed Oliver DT Houston

The Bills are still looking to replace a few guys they’ve lost. They need to surround their young QB with talent. I do not think there are many guys worth a first round pick at WR especially this early. Oliver is a player who can play inside or outside at the next level. He’s physical, quick, and strong. He is equally good in run and pass defense. I would love for the Bills to get this player and build around him.

6. Browns: Byron Murphy CB Washington

Byron Murphy Washington Murphy is the next in line to come out of the new DBU. Byron isn’t the biggest guy, but don’t let it fool you into believing he can’t or won’t tackle. He is very physical, even though he’s only around 185 lbs. Exceptional coverage skills, allow him to put WR on lockdown, and with the size to hang around with some TEs. Browns were criticized for taking Ward last year, well they add another guy to that secondary in Murphy who can be the opposite WR.

7. Jets: Clelin Ferrell DE Clemson

The Jets are another team that simply needs to add talent, and Ferrell is one who can add pass rush outside and let Williams wreak havoc inside. Ferrell is an elite pass rusher, who is also a good run defender. He’s simply good all around. He isn’t small, and he can win with power and finesse.

8. Colts: Greedy Williams CB LSU

By year’s end the race to be the top DB will come down to Williams and Murphy. In this scenario Murphy edges out Greedy. Greedy is an elite cover corner with speed. He’s also around 6’2″ which gives him much needed size outside. He excels in man, has good turn of direction skills. His weaknesses are that he is quite light and isn’t really physical as a tackler or run defender. But if you just want coverage guys he’s your man. The Colts can really bolster their defense with this pick. Sure O line could be an option, but I don’t really have an O lineman that’s similar in talent to Greedy left.

9. Falcons: Deandre Baker CB Georgia

Falcons have been comprimised on defense through a lot of injuries. Adding a guy like Baker can help mitigate some of that with his play. They already have Trufant, but there is nothing wrong with Baker. Baker is only about 5’10”, but his tackling ability are second to none in this class. He’s a coverage corner who can be excellent in zone or man, which is highly beneficial to a Falcons defense that takes pride in flexibility. The issue for Baker will be size, but also his lack of athletic ability, I don’t think he’s that fast. Neither was Desmond King and look how that turned out. Chargers got a first round talent in round 5, and everyone in the league is scratching their heads.

10. Buccaneers: Deionte Thompson S Alabama

6’2″ 195 lbs. The Bucs are a mess defensively, currently the worst defense in the league. Thompson will help Tampa use the cover 2 they covet. Thompson is a free range safety, able to go from sideline to sideline and makes use of his coverage skills to make plays on the ball. He can be a bit wild as a tackler, throwing his body around which could cause injury. He can play in the box or out in coverage, which gives him the ability to be a force as a defender.

The Giants didn’t pick a QB. Yup, even with Eli almost 38 years old the Giants decided to stay the course and load up for one last run. How will these picks like Saquon Barkley help?

Here is community member Cowboysfan1993 with his take on it:

1. Giants: Saquon Barkley RB Penn State

The Giants want to commit to the run more. They get Barkley. He’s high athletic and strong. Big RB. He’s good as a runner, but even as a receiver he is a threat. He’s a bell cow RB that can turn any run into a TD. He’s not likely to play ST, but he offers value there as well. I think this is a good pick, but their O line still isn’t great, so they may not get as much value out of him initially. Grade: A

2. Giants: Will Hernandez OG Tulsa

I had Hernandez going in round 1, so this is a steal. Hernandez is a big man who excels in run blocking and has surprising athletic ability for his size. He is also good at pass blocking. He will help both Eli and Saquon. Grade: A+

3. Giants: Lorenzo Carter OLB Georgia

Carter is an athletic freak who is well built. He can play all over the front 7, but his tape and production simply isn’t there. I feel this is a huge reach by the Giants. Grade: F

4. Giants: Bijhon Jackson DT Arkansas

I like BJ Hill, and he was an integral part for that front 7. He’s strong and wins with leverage. I think this is just a little early, but he will bolster that Giants front 4. Grade: B-

5. Giants: Kyle Lauletta QB

Kyle Lauletta This is about where I expect him to go. He’s got all the tools to be successful. He excels with passes underneath and in the middle. He has good pocket awareness. He has accuracy issues going down the field. He has some potential. This pick likely means the Davis Webb experiment is over.

The NFC has finally caught up with the rest of the NFL and is now one of the elite conferences in late 2016. That’s right. The Cowboys are the NFL’s best team at 9-1, the Giants are 7-3, and the Washington Redskins are right there at 6-3.

This was a division that was once laughed at but some key free agent decisions and NFL draft additions have helped these teams make the leap to the top of the league. Dallas has a whole new rookie backfield, Washington signed an elite corner, and New York has one of the best young defensive backfields in football.

Who will help these teams take Lombardi’s home in the future? Cowboysfan1993 has brought us a great new mock for the whole NFC east going forward. Check it out below.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 2017 NFL MocK:

1. Eagles: Dan Feeney OG Indiana

Round 1 The Eagles look to have found their franchise QB in Wentz, but unfortunately other than the defensive front, the Eagles lack talent. They don’t have a single WR that is relaible, their O line is a mess, and their RB are average if that. The Eagles could go WR first, but ultimately protecting Wentz is top priority. Yes OT is the best route to go for value, but Dan Feeney is the best O lineman in this class. Wentz can escape pressure from the outside, but every QB crumbles if the pressure comes right at them. Feeney is a good 6’4″ 310 mauler. He can open holes in the run game and keep defenders off of Wentz. He plays angry, but controlled.

2. Eagles: Evan Engram TE Ole Miss

Round 3 The Eagles do not have a 2nd round pick due to the Wentz trade. They addressed O line in the first, but now it is time to address the receiving positions. Evan Engram is listed as a TE, but is more so an oversized WR than anything. Engram is athletic and is solididly built at 6’3″ 225 lbs. Eagles fans will complain, noting they have two solid TE already, but Engram can play in the slot or outside creating mismatches with CB, S, and LB. He is also an underrated blocker. He is easily a player who can catch between 8-12 passes on Sundays.

3. Eagles: Conor McDermott OT UCLA

Round 4 Did I mention how bad the Eagles O line was. Jason Peters is getting old and is not the same player he once was, and Lane Johnson is unreliable off the field. They need someone who will be on the field more. At 6’8″ McDermott has the size to match any DE. He isn’t the best player, but he can get the job done.
