I don’t care how you feel about LSU or Les Miles you cannot deny that he has found another good one in Tyrann Mathieu. Whether it is stripping the ball, intercepting the ball, or making a sack when it is needed, Mathieu has been all around the ball. He is the biggest playmaker in the country if you ask me.

He now has four Heisman votes AS A SOPHMORE CORNERBACK. That is up from the lone Heisman vote he received two weeks ago. Here is the breakdown from ESPN:

Note that yes, he has more votes than Marcus Lattimore now.

With all that said, I was still surprised to see that he is already getting Heisman consideration. On ESPN’s Heisman watch Mathieu comes in at the #10 position with just one fifth place vote.

Normally this wouldn’t be a story but he hasn’t even played half of his sophomore season! If you don’t know the name Tyrann Mathieu I suggest you get real familiar. He’s going to be making big plays for the next year and it is no out the question that he ends up the #1 overall pick in 2013. I would not be surprised if that happened, not at all.

And this is the guy who doesn’t think any corner should go in the top 10 picks telling you…

I know you’re probably thinking “no way” but let’s look at it this way. The way Tyrann Mathieu is playing right now is on a level that is above many cornerbacks we have seen drafted in the top 10 and he can’t even declare for the draft until 2013.

Mathieu is probably the best player on LSU’s defense, and that defense is the best defense in the nation. He is always around the ball and making huge momentum changing plays. Against Oregon (a 40-27 beatdown) Mathieu stripped a kick returner and scooped up the ball for a special team touchdown. He finished the contest with 10 tackles. Yes, people 10 tackles and a touchdown against the then #3 team in the nation.

Against #25 Mississippi State Tyrann simply followed up with another 10 tackles and against #16 West Virginia he finished up with 5 tackles, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, and an interception.

It’s not often I think a cornerback is a “can’t miss” game-changing player. If anything, I’m on the side of the fence that says that you don’t need great defensive backs to win if you focus on the other seven positions. But Tyrann Mathieu has a nose for the ball and creating turnovers that we haven’t seen since dare I say Ed Reed.

Going into the Cotton Bowl, many draft fans eyes were on LSU’s defenders Patrick Peterson and Drake Nevis. Both players are slated to come off the board in round one. In some circles Patrick Peterson is heralded as the number one overall prospect on the board, especially now that Andrew Luck will be staying in school.

A large part of Peterson’s game is definitely his return abilities. People have compared him to a better Dez Bryant in the return game. Peterson certainly had some nice runs in the Cotton Bowl to prove that point as well. But that is not why people are saying that Peterson is their favorite player on the board. It is because of his cover skills. The same cover skills that had a hard time covering Texas A&M’s Jeff Fuller at times.

Jeff Fuller was expected before the game to stay in school but it now is unclear if the 6’4 Junior will be taking his talents to south beach the NFL Draft, with Julio Jones and others. Fuller finished the game with 7 receptions for 83 yards. Not eye popping on first look, but in the game it was clear that Fuller knew how to use his size advantage on Peterson, catching many back-shoulder grabs over the “#1 player” in the draft.

According to ESPN, when asked about his NFL intentions Fuller replied, “I’m definitely thinking about it.”

On the other side of the field, Terrance Toliver had a huge day as well with 5 receptions, 112 yards and 3 touchdowns as LSU went on to close the door on the Aggies. Toliver, a Senior, will be in the draft and is slated to go as high as the first round.
