The blue and orange made a huge trade today to acquire the services of one Mr. Russell Wilson, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks.

In the deal Denver is sending three players and five draft picks to Seattle in exchange for Wilson and a fourth round pick.

Here is how it plays out:

DEN trades:
Shelby Harris
Drew Lock
Noah Fant
First round pick
First round pick
Second round pick
Second round pick
Fifth round pick

SEA trades:
Russell Wilson
Fourth round pick

That is a lot to trade but Denver was out of moves. Teddy Bridgewater cannot last 17 games, Drew Lock is too inconsistent, and it is looking like Malik Willis & Kenny Pickett will both be top 3 selections in the 2022 NFL draft.

A silver lining is that Seattle will take on a cap hit of $27 million in the deal.

Former Broncos WR Demariyus Thomas has allegedly passed away sometime earlier today. There are little to no details but since ESPN is reporting it I have no choice but to post this sad news.

Really one of my favorite WRs ever. Always found a way to help the team and was tough as they came. I really have no words. The past 4 years have just been so tough for me personally, this is just one more thing on the list.

I hope as we come out of the global pandemic people in general learn to be more kind to one another and appreciate the little time we all have together. Or maybe we’ll never get it. I don’t know.

RIP Demariyus Thomas if the reports are true. Gone too soon.

Von is in the last year of his deal and wasn’t going to be brought back next season. Denver got in front of things and traded him to stock up on assets in the wake of the best pass rusher to ever play for the franchise leaving the squad.

Here are the details:

Broncos are finalizing a trade to send eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two second-day 2022 draft picks, league sources tell ESPN.

Miller is now saying his goodbyes to his friends in the Broncos’ training facility.

Rams are sending the Broncos a second-and third-round pick in the 2022 draft in exchange for eight-time Pro Bowl LB Von Miller, per sources.

As part of the trade, the Broncos are paying $9 million of Von Miller’s remaining $9.7 million salary, per sources.

As a fan I’m going to miss Von but I knew this day was coming. It was obvious that the team had to move on and if the Rams don’t care about draft picks then I say get as many as you can. Hopefully Denver can turn these picks into some players to get this team back on track in 2022 and beyond.

The Broncos are in win now mode and do not have time to see if Trey Lance can stay out of Liv Cowherd’s DMs long enough to be a good QB (it’s a joke relax.)

Seriously, Vic Fangio is going to draft Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah with the 9th overall pick. I never thought Trey Lance or Justin Fields was a realistic option. Fangio is a defensive guy and can win with a QB that just doesn’t make mistakes and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah fits the scheme like a glove.

I’m probably 100% wrong but that will not stop me from celebrating like I have the Powerball numbers if the Broncos really do draft Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah on Thursday.

Yes, the NFL Draft is an inexact science and when dealing with later picks anything can happen but we can still get a gauge of the team’s ability to scout talent by checking back on an entire draft class.

And the 2017 draft class is just purely brutal when you look back at it.

Here are the moves the Broncos made along with the very next players at the position taken. It is not pretty.

All of this happened in the 2017 draft:

OT Ryan Ramczyk was the very next tackle taken after Denver took Garett Bolles. Even at the time drafting Bolles high was considered a huge risk and the Broncos still took him with a first round pick.

Bucs WR Chris Godwin was the very next receiver drafted after Carlos Henderson.

Then the big one: NFL 100 #7 overall player George Kittle was the next tight end taken after Jake Butt. But no, it gets worse. He was the very next pick after Butt!

Imagine that offense with a half competent quarterback. And that is why drafting matters so much. That is how teams that draft well like the Patriots built a 20 year dynasty off 4th and 5th rounders while other teams have to spend crazy in free agency or do risky trades to stay above water.

Hopefully the 2021 NFL Draft is not one Elway throws away because all of the foundation is built for a potential dynastic team going forward.

So uneventful there was actually no real reason to do a full recap. The Dolphins got Tua, the Bengals got Burrow, the Packers didn’t draft a WR, and the Eagles reached on a bunch of guys that they could have had a round later.

But one team, one GM/President that did well as usual is John Elway. Full disclosure this is extremely bias but it’s pretty obvious Denver is one of the teams that won this 2020 NFL Draft.

First of all Denver stood pat and didn’t spend any capital to get the highest rated WR in the class. Yes the fanbase had their hearts set on Ruggs and his incredible speed but that was because no one expected Jerry Jeudy to fall to 15. Elway raised the roof and selected the highest guy on the board with no hesitation.

Then a round later Denver double dips in the WR class with KJ Hamler. Elway again doesn’t reach, stays calm and simply picks again from the deepest draft pool of receivers ever:

But it keeps going. Denver then comes back with the 83rd pick and grabs Lloyd Cushenberry. Who’s that? Oh just the athletic 315 pound center who kept Joe Burrow off the turf all last year.

That’s potentially three starters. But with the 77th pick they grab Michael Ojemudia, a quick corner who will contribute from day 1. McTelvin Agim comes on board with the 95th pick and will have a great chance to start as well.

That’s potentially four starters in the first 100 picks. You’re not supposed to draft this well. To top it off Denver grabs Albert Okwuegbunam TE from Mizzou to pair back with Drew Lock. The TE group is crowded but he has a chance to make the main roster and contribute as well.

If Lock is competent this is going to be a scary team along with the additions of vets AJ Bouye, Jurrell Casey, and Melvin Gordon III.

He looked in good shape and still had the strong arm that made him famous back in the days when the 49ers were on the cusp of a Super Bowl victory. We all know the Broncos have attempted to trade for Colin in the past, will they sign him now?
