All rational was thrown out the window as the Broncos found a way to win games in which their Quarterback only completed 2 passes in one contest, 8 in another, and less than 46% of all throws. On paper the team wasn’t supposed to win with those type of stats at the QB position but facts are facts, somehow they won. According to former Broncos QB Brady Quinn, luck could be a big reason why.

It is a breath of fresh air to finally get some perspective and honesty in the media on the whole Tebowmania thing, and from a former player nonetheless.

Here is what Quinn said in an interview with GQ Mag:

Early in the season, there was a game when Kyle [Orton] got hurt and the coaches were calling for me to go in, but Kyle got up and finished the game out. So I was the second-string guy. Then, a few weeks later, they decided to put Tim in. I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that. Just ’cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I didn’t have any billboards. That would have been nice.

The entire game, the defensive line is chasing the quarterback around, and that wears down the pass rush. Meanwhile, the defensive backs are chasing receivers, but you only throw eight passes, so they start to feel lazy. It only takes that one play, that one big pass, for a touchdown.

If you look at it as a whole there’s a lot of things that just don’t seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I’ll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?

As a Bronco fan this preseason has been pretty interesting to say the least. Not only has the most exciting draft pick since Jay Cutler set foot in Dove Valley but the team seems poised to become a dominate defensive team, something they were never close to under the leadership of Coach Shanahan. Unknown to the rest of the NFL the Broncos are quietly turning the corner into a legit perennial playoff contender.

But that’s not the topic of my article. What I want to talk about is Brady Quinn. Why is he doing so bad?

He had a lot of talent coming out of Notre Dame and playing under Charlie Weiss. He helped make Darius Walker and Maurice Stovall household names for about 3 years while they were in college. Al Davis even considered taking Brady #1 overall… but went with that Jamarcus guy instead.

None of those things could have predicted how bad Quinn would do in the NFL. He never could outseat Derek Anderson as the Browns full time Quarterback (what’s up Matt Leinart) and now it looks like Tim Tebow is going to take his backup duties before the season even begins.

Is it a mental thing with Brady Quinn? Was the anguish of playing for the Browns enough to shoot his chances of being productive at the NFL level to nothing? Is it a talent question? Does he just not have “it” in the arm department?

The numbers say that he is a middle-of-the-road QB at best so far. His career completion percentage is a pedestrian 52% . His 10 career touchdowns to 9 interceptions isn’t setting the world on fire as well. In 2009, he appeared in 10 games, of which the Browns only won 2, and Quinn threw 8 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. To his credit the cupboard was bare in Cleveland with a aging Jamal Lewis and no Braylon Edwards, but still you have to wonder.

I don’t know what is in store for Brady. But what I do know is that if Quinn doesn’t do something to turn it around quickly he may be trying out for the Omaha Nighthawks pretty soon.

Either Josh McDaniels is the smartest man in the room, or the McDaniels haters were right all along. Rumor is from Dove Valley that the Broncos have come to a conclusion in their quarterback merry-go-round, and that decision won’t bode well for newly acquired Brady Quinn.

Yes, that Brady Quinn that McDaniels was interested in trading Jay Cutler for last year. Yes, that Brady Quinn that McDaniels traded Peyton Hillis for. Yes, that Brady Quinn who has been splitting reps with Kyle Orton.

ESPN.com reports that the Broncos have decided to carry just two active quarterbacks during the regular season and Brady Quinn is likely the odd man out.

Our View: Kyle Orton is the clear starter and first-round pick Tim Tebow has impressed coach Josh McDaniels with his versatility, so that doesn’t leave any room for Quinn. Tebow will likely be used for situational work, while Orton takes the majority of the snaps, making Quinn interesting trade bait if this situation comes to fruition

Last season Quinn finished with a QB rating of 67.2 with a 53% completion rate, 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Needless to say it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he is cut but Broncos fans would love to see if a change of scenery would help Brady any. It would be quite the buzz kill if he didn’t even make it out of training camp as a member of the Denver Broncos.

Is Josh McDaniels a quarterback genius? Does he know something we don’t? It seems like he believes that Tim Tebow as a lone backup is going to be sufficient. Many around the game believe that Tebow cannot even play the position effectively as a professional. That is another article for another day, but I’ll just say that I am not surprised at all by this rumor. You have to assume that Pat Bowlen, one of the non-billionaire NFL owners, would like to put his prized pony from Florida out there sooner than later.

We’ll see if this potential huge transaction happens…

It’s been two days since Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders brought the former Notre Dame Quarterback into Dove Valley. As a fan I am still scratching my head. Sure, Quinn has been coveted by McDaniels for over a year now but was it necessary to trade for him with Kyle Orton already tendered as the starter for 2010? To McDaniels the answer seems to be yes.

In his defense, I can understand it from a fiscal point of view. It’s like getting that pair of shoes you always wanted but couldn’t afford off the clearance rack. Quinn was clearly not wanted in Cleveland and all it cost the Broncos was a backup fullback and two low round picks. For what that’s worth, probably three guys who would never make the roster. Quinn also will only make $700k unless he takes a certain percentage of the snaps. Thats a third less than what the Broncos paid Chris Simms.

From a football point of view I really do not get it. You know the old saying, if you have two quarterbacks you have none. This move just seems to complicate things. Kyle Orton has one year on his deal, and was tendered as the presumed starter. Bringing in Quinn at this point makes it look like Orton could very well be playing his last season in Denver next year. How long will it be before CBS cuts to Brady Quinn warming up on the sideline after another three and out by Orton?

I understand that McDaniels couldn’t resist coaching a player he covets at the cost of a player he didn’t use plus two unknowns. I just hope it doesn’t shake up what the Broncos had going in 2009. Sure, Orton is conservative and doesn’t throw with the best of them. But he got the Broncos through a .500 season after no one thought they’d win four games. Quinn hasn’t done anything up to this point in his career and replacing someone reliable during his career for someone that has been a disappointment could be a huge mistake.

I think the phones are buzzing secretly but no team really has what it takes to complete a deal.

Detroit has the best picks, but signing the #1 overall pick is not something we are trying to do. And Stafford is essentially starting over, which McDaniels cannot afford to do unless he and X really believe that Stafford is going to show something that will make signing him worth it… so no. At least not for the #1 overall selection. Maybe #20, and some other picks, including a future 1st.

The Bucs and the Jets both don’t have a QB to give us in return. Their picks are both below ours. Dealing without a third team probably means we get ripped off. Or end up with a bunch of picks, which is not what McDaniels really wants.

Cleveland is the snag in this IMO. The biggest snag is that if the Jets want Cutler, they need to workout a deal with Eric Mangini. Oh, the irony. They were spotted making good at the owners meetings so you never know. Mangini and crew would have to look on tape and decide if they really want Quinn in the fold. I’m assuming not.

In my opinion, the Lions will sign Stafford before the draft thus making Tampa and New York the most likely spots to trade Cutler. Neither team has upgraded at the QB spot and Jay’s on the market. The only snag once again.. is Mangini. Does he want to trade Quinn? Is he willing to give the Jets a bailout? Time will tell.
