NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock says North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz shares Andrew Luck’s ceiling.

“When I look at him, I see a kid that’s as athletic or more athletic than Andrew Luck,” Mayock said. “He’s bigger than Andrew Luck. He’s got arm strength comparable to Andrew Luck,” Mayock said on Tuesday. “He just doesn’t have the experience that Andrew Luck had at a high level coming out of college. So I see a ceiling for this kid similar to Andrew Luck. That’s why I believe in this kid so much, but it’s going to take a little bit of time.” Luck, who went No. 1 to the Colts in 2012 and arrived with more polish, passed for 4,374 yards as a rookie. Mayock added that Wentz has drawn praise from scouts for his intangibles. “His character apparently is off the charts, that’s what I was told by everybody surrounding the Senior Bowl that had anything to do with him. Smart, tough, loves the game,” Mayock said. Wentz is expected to post “Luck/Newton type Combine numbers” later this week in Indy, according to former NFL scout Matt Williamson.

Andrew Luck is one of the better athletes at the quarterback position in the entire league. He’s also very poised and makes very quick decisions when he has a half decent offensive line. Just look at his 2014 campaign that ended in deflated footballs and one game away from the Super Bowl. People don’t even remember the whooping they put on Peyton’s Broncos either.

In my opinion Wentz is much closer to Alex Smith than Andrew Luck. And when you really think about it Alex Smith is not a bad comparison at all.

Irsay of course says this is just a rumor and that the deal will get done. Here is what he said:

The Colts owner most recently has used the social-media tool to dispute a report from Len Pasquarelli of the Sports Xchange that his team and quarterback Andrew Luck have encountered a “stumbling block” regarding the marketing language in Luck’s rookie contract.

“One source with knowledge of the talks even suggested that Luck would ‘have to clear’ marketing proposals with the club,” Pasquarelli writes.

Says Irsay in response: ”As much as I respect my friend Lenny Pasquarelli[,] the ‘One Source’ is completely wrong[.] We’re close on #12 [and] final details [are] unrelated 2 marketing.”

As to Pasquarelli’s explanation that the Colts believed Luck’s predecessor, Peyton Manning, was “overexposed,” Irsay also takes issue. ”It’s ludicrous 2 say we thought #18 was overexposed, he did a great job of focusing on football [and] “Branding” [was] incredibly positive Image 4 Franchise,” Irsay said.

And so Irsay concludes with the following observation. ”Someone is being fed a big breaky of BS this morning!”

Favre spoke to NFL Network’s Deion Sanders on Friday and said he’s a Griffin fan.

“Griffin, he’s smaller, but if I was starting a team, I’d probably of went with RG3 just because, if they can’t protect you, you got to protect yourself,” Favre said.

Accroding to various reports, Luck’s deal will be slightly higher than the one QB Cam Newton received last year as the NFL Draft’s first overall selection. It is being reported that Luck’s deal will be in the neighborhood of $24 million dollars with approximately $16 million guaranteed.

It’s unclear precisely when the Colts informed Luck of this, but a league source said the Colts have known for weeks that Luck would be their pick. His style most closely resembles that of former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and he is the player Indianapolis wants to rebuild around, the source said.

Don’t be sad if you are Robert Griffin III. Griffin will likely be the #2 pick, unless the Redskins traded all those picks for something crazy like a WR. Justin Blackmon to DC? That’s maybe not that crazy considering its a Shanadraft pick. Either way we are a week away and will have all the answers at the 2012 draft.

That leaves us to one team at the bottom of the 2012 draft standings. The Indianapolis Colts stand alone at 0-9 with no hope and Stanford QB Andrew Luck staring them right in the eye. There is no question that the Colts are the NFL’s worst team. Curtis Painter never expected to start 9 games in a season. Donald Brown and Joseph Addai are both looking like busts in the backfield, and to top it all off the Colts defense looks like they’d let me have a 100 yard receiving game.

So will the Colts draft Andrew Luck?

There is NO question they will. I don’t have to regurgitate what you’ve seen on ESPN. The Colts have to realize they have a 30-something quarterback with a bad neck. That’s just no bueno any way you look at it.

Some people, even me, have said that Peyton may play into his 40’s. That was before the multiple neck surgeries and the delayed healing process. There is nothing left for Peyton and the Colts to accomplish together. They had a good run but its over now. People of Indianapolis be thankful you sucked bad enough to get Andrew Luck and enjoy your next run of elite quarterbacking for the next a decade and a half.

Luck looked well early on in the game, hitting receivers with ease and getting the ball out very quickly.  There were also a few plays where Andrew ran on a designed run and showed the ability to get some decent yards.  All in all, he showed great athleticism.

In the second half things started to go downhill for Luck.  He forced a few balls into double coverage which resulted in a few interceptions.  He really seemed flustered by Oregon’s adjustments in the second half.  Plays like this show his youth, but as I stated before he seems like the real deal as far as mechanics go.

Andrew Luck will likely be the #1 or #2 selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.  He and Ryan Mallet have undoubtedly passed Jake Locker as the top quarterbacks and are not looking back.
