2013 NFL Mock Draft: October 22 Edition!

By
Updated: October 22, 2012

I am trying to get more frequently updated mock drafts up this season. This is one of the worst years I can remember as far as the actual product on the field. Has there ever been so many mediocre teams in the NFL at one time? The entire AFC is either 3-3 or they are dead last/first in their divison. Insane.

So many teams in the NFL are in great need of a talent infusion in my opinion, and in this draft where they are going to trying to make it happen. This draft is very different from my previous. For one, as I type this the Carolina Panthers have just fired GM Marty Hurney and hold a top 3 pick to go along with that. For those of you that bet on NFL football, I bet you didn’t see that coming.

I still have three QB’s in the first although one moved WAY up. I also have a few defenders shuffling position as well.

Enough talk, let’s get down to it:

1. Browns: Barkley, Matt QB USC
The Browns are going to have to start over if they cannot avoid getting this pick. Brandon Weeden has done some good things, but let’s be serious it was a waste of resources to select him with a first round pick. Even if Weeden doesn’t play terrible it is just time for a regime change and this franchise to be turned in one single direction. The best way to do that is to clean house in management and that usually means a new QB as well.

2. Panthers: Lotulelei, Star DT Utah
Look who has the #2 overall pick now? Kind of incredible to think that the Panthers are this bad with Cam Newton, Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, etc. but numbers don’t lie. They just relieved their GM as I am tying this so possibly this is the pick that gets the Panthers finally on track to cash in that potential. Adding a disruptor like Lotuleli will go a long way on that defensive line. Charles Johnson approves this selection.

3. Jaguars: Smith, Geno QB West Virginia
I am not ready to make Geno my #1 overall pick yet. I still believe Matt Barkley’s knowledge of the West Coast system simply trumps any Air Raid QB. We’ve seen spread option QB’s go insanely high in Vince Young and Cam Newton, so its not farfetched Geno can end up #1. For now he replaces Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert has to start showing poise and winning games to avoid this selection.

4. Chiefs: Bray, Tyler QB Tennessee
Tyler Bray is the #4 pick. Is he the fourth best player in this class? Most likely not. But he is my third ranked Quarterback and that will not change. This kid has the swagger, confidence, and arm to change NFL fortunes sooner rather than later. The Chiefs need all three of those things at the QB position. Match made.

5. Saints: Jones, Jarvis OLB Georgia
Jarvis Jones has the talent to be the #1 pick in this draft. No doubt. But right now the NFL seems to be lacking a lot of talent offensively and those top picks will be reserved for Quarterbacks. He could still crack the top 3 depending on how the picks shake out. In this scenario he’s going to WHO DAT nation who badly need to stop DAT running game.

6. Raiders: Hankins, Johnathan DT Ohio State
Hankins is right up there with Star. Expect their names to be called no more than 3 picks apart. Dennis Allen probably face palms when he sees Tommy Kelly on tape (in private of course). Hankins is a big kid with a little mean streak. Exactly what you need in a DT.

7. Buccaneers: Milliner, Demarcus CB Alabama
Mark Barron is making the Bucs look smarter and smarter every week. When they traded down to pick him instead of Morris Claiborne it seemed odd at first but now it actually feels like the right pick. In 2013 however a CB will have to be selected somewhere in this draft for Tampa.

8. Lions: Teo, Manti ILB Notre Dame
Notre Dame is undefeated and a big reason because of that is Manti Teo. He is already getting Heisman votes. If Luke Kuechly went top 10 in 2012. I see no reason why Teo cannot be placed top 10 in this mock draft. It only makes sense.

9. Bills: Mingo, Barkevious OLB LSU
No Tyler Wilson? You probably won’t see Mr. Wilson first round over here for a long time. The Bills need a QB but hey, they just may stick to their guns with this Fitzpatrick deal. He stuffs stats like no other. Mingo is the heir apparent to Shawne Merriman and hopefully is the last piece in the billion dollar defense that cannot stop anyone.

10. Bengals: Werner, Bjoern DE Florida State
Carlos Dunlap and Michael Johnson are great, but the latter is far too inconsistent. The window is opening in the AFC North for the Bengals but they’ve got to get to those QBs to take the title from the top teams.

11. Jets: Hunter, Justin WR Tennessee
TEBOW! TEBOW! TEBOW! You’ve heard the chants, Rex heard them and so did Mark Sanchez. And guess what? He still ain’t getting no burn. The Jets need a WR in the WORST way. So bad they may call Terrell Owens up.

12. Rams: Allen, Keenan WR UCLA
Jeff Fisher isn’t even playing Brian Quick. Like… I’m dead serious. The kid isn’t even activated most games. If Danny Amendola is your #1 WR and on IR ever year and Brandon Gibson is the plan after that…

13. Titans: Montgomery, Sam DE LSU
The Titans luck up. Mingo or Montgomery, they are going to get a talented rusher either way.

14. Rams: Matthews, Jake OT Texas AM
After securing a WR this draft, unlike last draft when he let Jacksonville take Blackmon from under his nose, Jeff Fisher opts to finally protect Sam Bradford.

15. Cowboys: Lemonier, Corey DE Auburn
There is a 50-50 chance Anthony Spencer gets a longterm contract. But until that happens…

16. Broncos: Reid, Eric S LSU
The Denver Broncos have a nice defense but there are two places that need upgrading: finding talented defensive backs and finding a defensive tackle next to Wolfe.

17. Colts: Jordan, Dion DE Oregon
Someone has to rise up the boards or it just wouldn’t be a draft. For that position let’s pencil in Dion Jordan. The Colts need a OLB/DE hybrid for the 3-4 that fits better than the guys they currently have. I’m guessing Jordan will blow up the combine and cement himself somewhere in the first.

18. Dolphins: Woods, Robert WR USC
Robert Woods will slip because he doesn’t have great size to be a #1, but the Dolphins shouldn’t care. They need a downfield threat in whatever packaging they can get it.

19. Eagles: Banks, Jonathan CB Mississippi State
People are getting all kinds of fired in Philadelphia. [insert bad political joke here] With the team refocusing on the defense, it only makes sense this would be a CB. Don’t rule out OT depending on if Jason Peters is on schedule or not to return in 2013. Mike Vick ain’t trying to hear 20 games without JP.

20. Steelers: Lattimore, Marcus RB South Carolina
Rashard Mendenhall is done. In Pittsburgh at least. I’ll be surprised if they resigned him.

21. Chargers: Patterson, Cordarrelle WR Tennessee
The Chargers have to figure something out. Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem are not going to become #1 WRs.

22. Cardinals: Joeckel, Luke OT Texas AM
Kevin Kolb will survive 2012 with his starting job but he has to stop taking so many hits. As I predicted he’s already injured.

23. Packers: Eifert, Tyler TE Notre Dame
Jermichael Finley is too busy dissing fans on Twitter instead of catching passes. That’s cool, because there was no way the Packers were backing up that Brinks truck to his house next season.

24. Bengals: Ogletree, Alec ILB Georgia
Great value pick here. The Bengals would like to sure up their defense with the two first rounders. I wouldn’t rule out a trade down for more selections either.

25. Seahawks: Williams, Terrance WR Baylor
Is Braylon Edwards even getting burn? Anytime you have to bring in Terrell Owens that speaks volumes of your young receivers. And let’s keep it real: TO should have made this team. That’s how mediocre the WR corps are.

26. Ravens: Rhodes, Xavier CB Florida State
Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are going to call it a career after this season. It’s not official but you can all but see it in the body language of this team. The Texans just put 420 yards on them in Terrell Suggs’ return…. there just isn’t enough talent without Ray and Ed. The Ravens aren’t COOKED yet… but they are getting warm.

27. Vikings: Short, Kawann DT Purdue
Kevin Williams is getting up there in age, we all know it.

28. Giants: Warmack, Chance OG Alabama
*Does the Salsa* oh yeah I have to make a pick here…. give them the best offensive lineman available and maybe Eli won’t have to pull comebacks out his you know what every weekend.

29. 49ers: McDonald, T.J. S USC
Donte Whitner is still serviceable, but the Niners shouldn’t be shy about grooming his replacement.

30. Bears: Skov, Shayne ILB Stanford
Speaking of replacements…. doesn’t it suck for the Bears that Urlacher looks so slow? It’s probably a career for Brian, no shame in that. This is a placeholder pick. I think the Bears will select some ILB but will likely trade down if they pick this high and allow someone to take someone who slips. I could see the Eagles,Raiders, or even the Jets sliding back into round 1 for Tyler Wilson here.

31. Texans: Jones, Barrett OG Alabama
Jones can play OG or tackle. He would be a great value pick here. The Texans need a young WR too but they can do that later.

32. Falcons: Buchanan, Michael DE Illinois
Another fast riser. Buchanan can easily rise up to this selection especially if the Falcons have it. Ray Edwards isn’t going to play forever and his sack numbers are no where what they used to be (zero sacks in 2012 so far).

BONUS PICKS

Round 2. Patriots: Austin, Tavon WR West Virginia
How much longer is Wes Welker going to be a Patriot? How much longer will Brandon Lloyd drop deep balls? You know this team covets players that can attack you multiple ways. Imagine their screen game with Tavon. Man……

Round 2. Redskins: Amerson, David CB NC State
DeAngelo Hall $9 million in a contract year? Pardon me while I laugh at that….
